PROS / This app improved boot-up speed 25.5 percent.
CONS / The diagnostic consistency score was the lowest in our review.
VERDICT / AVG PC TuneUp only improved our computer's performance by 9.5 percent, but the boot-up speed improvement was impressive.
AVG PC TuneUp is a suite of PC system repair tools designed to provide more storage space, faster speeds, longer battery life and less crashing – all in an interface that works automatically. AVG also promises that this app can restore your PC to its original speed. While we certainly didn't see dramatic improvements to our test computer, it did produce excellent improvements to boot-up speed. However, the diagnostic consistency was shockingly low.
To test each PC repair app in our review, we started by benchmarking our test computer with PCMark 8. The benchmarking app looked at the performance of word and data processing, graphics processing, web browsing and video chat quality. Then we used every optimization tool available with this app and ran the PCMark 8 benchmarking tests again. This allowed us to gauge the improvements, if any, that were made by the optimization efforts. We also measured the boot-up speed, both before and after optimization. The last test we performed was a diagnostic-consistency test to gauge whether or not the app actually fixes the issues it diagnosis.
On average, AVG PC TuneUp improved our test PC by 9.5 percent. This was above average, but only just. It's not a significant enough improvement to be noticeable in day-to-day usage. But then again, neither is the best average overall improvement in our tests – the best system repair app only improved performance by 12.5 percent, and you need an improvement of over 20 percent for your PC to feel noticeably faster.
The boot-up speed improvement is where AVG PC TuneUp really excels. Using the startup manager tool, we were able to improve the boot-up speed of our test computer by 25.5 percent. For reference, this represents about 15 seconds if your computer takes one minute to boot up. Only a few of the system repair applications on our lineup recorded better boot-up speed improvements.
AVG PC TuneUp's diagnostic consistency was a significant disappointment. After nearly 30 rounds of testing consistency, it had a consistency rate of 43.5 percent, which made it the least-consistent app in our tests at diagnosing and fixing issues. We scanned our test computer, fixing all the issues it recognized, and then scanned it again. More often than not, it recognized nearly as many issues on the second scan as on the first. This low score suggests that the app either exaggerates the diagnostic results for effect or it simply isn't good enough to fix the issues it finds.
Still it's important to note that diagnostic consistency had no bearing on how much it improved our test computer. Despite the lack of consistency, it still improved our test computer relatively similar to products with higher consistency rates.
AVG PC TuneUp has a sleek interface that looks great, but that doesn't always translate to ease of use. Some of the interactive features of the interface get in the way of the process and can make it confusing. As such, this app received a C for the overall ease of use, which means novice users might feel lost as they navigate through all the tools. However, ease of installation received an A, making it one of the easiest products for a novice user to install.
AVG PC TuneUp is a suite of PC system repair software with tools designed to optimize your slow computer. However, after multiple rounds of testing the optimization tools, this system repair app only improved performance by 9.5 percent. In addition, the app had the lowest diagnostic consistency score, which means it will keep finding issues even after you've fixed everything. However, the boot-up speed was improved by 25.5 percent, which was among the best improvements made in that area.
