PROS / This system repair app improved boot-up speed considerably.
CONS / After optimization, we lost storage instead of gaining storage.
VERDICT / Glary Utilities Pro 5 is among the best system repair applications in our review because it improved PC performance by 10 percent and boot-up speed by 19 percent.
Glarysoft Ltd. developed Glary Utilities Pro 5 to be an all-in-one suite of system repair software designed with the purpose of clearing out junk files, repairing the Windows registry, managing drivers, tightening up security and generally making your computer run faster. The suite features over 20 premium tools, each designed for optimizing performance. In our tests, this system repair app was one of the top performers. It produced the second-best overall performance improvement and third-best improvement to boot-up speed. It also had a very high diagnostic consistency rate. For these reasons, Glary Utilities Pro 5 earns the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for best system repair software.
Our review of system repair software started by setting up our test computer to be frustratingly slow. We used PCMark 8 to benchmark the performance of word and data processing, graphics performance, web browsing and video chat quality. Then we optimized the test computer using every available tool in Glary Utilities Pro 5. Following optimization, we ran the benchmarking tests again so we could gauge any performance improvements. We also measured the improvements made to the boot-up speed and recorded the diagnostic consistency. We ran many rounds of each test so that the results could be averaged and also so that none of the results were an isolated, one-off occurrence.
Glary Utilities Pro improved our test computer's performance by 10 percent, on average. This was the second highest overall improvement in our tests. The test computer experienced the best improvements to word and data processing, which increased 5.82 percent. Graphics processing improved by 3 percent. The other facets of performance, web browsing and video chat, improved by less than one percent apiece.
None of these improvements are significant enough to be noticeable in day-to-day usage without benchmarking software. A noticeable improvement would need to be at least 20 percent or greater. So if your computer is slow, it's likely to still feel slow after using any system repair software. That said, PC maintenance is a good idea, and a 10-percent improvement helps with that even if you don't notice it.
The best feature culled from the optimization tests is the boot-up speed, which improved by 19 percent. While this wasn't the best improvement in our tests, it's certainly significant. For example, a 19-percent improvement on a minute is 11.4 seconds, which may not sound like a lot of time, but you'll definitely notice it when you're waiting for your computer to start up.
The one, though not insignificant, downside is the lack of recovered storage. This system repair app claims to clean out junk files and clear out storage space. However, after installing the app and running all the optimization tools, our test computer's storage decreased by 400MB. While this isn't a lot of lost storage to fret over, it's still lost storage. Some of the PC repair software we tested recovered up to 5GB of storage.
Glary Utilities Pro's diagnostic consistency rate was 97.5 percent. While this isn't perfect, this high rate suggests it rarely misses an issue, and it certainly doesn't try to exaggerate issues for the sake of making you think it's working. To evaluate diagnostic consistency, we ran a diagnostic scan, fixed all the errors and did a second scan. Ideally, the second scan should result in zero issues. We ran almost 30 rounds of this test and in most cases, this system repair app was perfect.
After our evaluation, we gave Glary Utilities Pro 5 a C for ease of use, which only means the ease of use is average for a novice user. You'll find some learning curves, but nothing that a novice user can't learn. This suite of system repair tools is full of features, but many of the tools don't provide much value and only serve to clutter the interface. The easiest part of the interface is the one-click maintenance tab.
As stated earlier in this review, Glary Utilities Pro has over 20 optimization tools. You can back up and restore your entire system, recover accidentally deleted files, repair shortcuts and registries, optimize security and privacy, and shred files. It's also one of the few apps that has a file-encryption tool, which is a handy security tool to have, because it allows you to protect all of your sensitive files with secure encryption.
The only advanced tool it's lacking is an SSD (solid-state drive) optimizer. However, only a few PC utility apps have this tool. In addition, you have to be careful with SSD optimizing tools, as performing optimizations techniques, such as defragmentation, can damage the SSD drive.
Help & Support
Glarysoft's help and support is disappointing. While you get three computer licenses, which allows you to install it on three computers, contacting support is a headache. The only contact channel is through email. The developer doesn't have phone support or live chat. This can make getting help quickly very difficult, as it can take days to receive a response via the email. The service provides a FAQs page, but the content is scant.
Glary Utilities Pro 5 is a suite of PC repair software designed to improve your PC's performance by providing an all-in-one interface for maintenance and monitoring. In our tests, this app improved our test computer's overall performance by 10 percent, and the boot-up speed by 19 percent. Both improvements were among the best in our tests. In addition, the diagnostic consistency was very high with a 97.5 percent rate. From our tests, this app is clearly one of the best system repair apps.
