Total Backup Recovery 9 Review

PROS / Total Backup Recovery has built-in backup support for Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, Hyper-V and even Oracle servers.

CONS / This software is missing a few important features, such as data deduplication and the ability to easily back up roaming profiles.

VERDICT / FarStone’s built-in support for Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, Hyper-V and Oracle makes Total Backup Recovery Server versatile software.

Total Backup Recovery Server from FarStone is Windows server backup software that can handle your Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, Hyper-V and even Oracle backup needs. Total Backup utilizes FarStone’s legacy of disk imaging software to provide reliable backup images for your Windows server.

Because FarStone only captures the active blocks in your hard drive, Total Backup Recovery Server’s images are kept small and manageable. An adjustable Compression Mode feature allows you to compress files by as much as 60 percent to reduce demands on disk space. The downside to this is of course that greater compression makes for unstable backups. When you run incremental backups, the software will update only the files that have changed since the last backup. This saves you both time and resources. However, the software lacks deduplication features and may save redundant information, wasting valuable space.

Total Backup Recovery’s scheduling features enable you to set backups to occur as frequent or infrequent as you would like – weekly, daily or hourly. Unfortunately, it will require a bit of technical know-how to create a backup policy for roaming profiles using the Open Command Shell. Other tasks that should be routine are likewise difficult to set up. An error-checking feature does automatically check the integrity of your backup files and your drive to confirm that your backups are both complete and functional.

Once you know your way around the software, Total Backup Recovery allows you to remotely deploy apps, computer backup files or restore functions. This feature lets you access other computers on your network to work with individual files, folders, partitions and drives. Master disk images can even be mass-deployed to configure multiple machines, including those with dissimilar hardware. Just make sure you have the necessary drivers for the new machine on hand to help save yourself some time.

FarStone’s server backup software can handle your complex backup schedules and recovery operations, including bare metal restoration. It also provides 256-bit AES encryption for file security, and support for a Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) so you don’t need a boot rescue disk for every little emergency.

Summary

As backup software, FarStone Total Backup Recovery provides great support for your Windows server backup and recovery needs. Its expansive capabilities are designed to work with your established network that could include Exchange, SQL, SharePoint or Hyper-V. However, it is comparatively difficult to use and is missing deduplication features.
