Computer Careers Review

Why Computer Careers?

Choosing a career path is one of the most important decisions a person will make in their lifetime. A computer career offers a wide array of opportunities, relatively high job security and great pay. This is because computer careers require a very specific skill that is in high demand by employers.

Those who choose a computer career will have a multiplicity of jobs to choose from. Most of them require you to have at least some post-secondary education such as an associate or bachelor’s degree. The higher paying career paths sometimes require you to have additional years of IT experience before you will be considered for those positions.

We rated and ranked the best computer careers. Software Engineer, Systems Analyst and Network Security Specialist earned the top spots in our review. We also have created informative articles about computer careers to help you make an informed decision about your own career path.

Computer Careers: What to Look For

We provide a side-by-side comparison of the computer careers based on salary, job availability and advancement potential. Much of the data we used on this site is from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here are the criteria we used to compare career paths.

The range of salaries that computer careers offer span anywhere from $22,000 a year on the low end to $140,000 for the highest earners. For comparison, the median salary for all vocations is $34,750. For the most part, computer careers are higher paying than other career paths available. Additionally, these numbers are a mere aggregate of salaried positions. They don’t account for those that choose a computer career and set out to be a freelancer or an entrepreneur. The best computer jobs offer well-paying positions at all points during a worker’s career.

Computer careers represent some of the fastest growing industries in today’s economy. Depending on the computer career you choose, opportunities for employment are projected to grow anywhere from 7 percent to 25 percent by the year 2022. By contrast, all occupations combined are expected to grow by about 11 percent. In addition to being a faster growing industry, computer careers enjoy a relatively low unemployment rate of between 4.2 and 0.90 percent. The best computer careers have a high growth rate and a low unemployment rate.

Because most computer careers are in high demand and pay higher wages, those hiring for those positions naturally expect applicants to be competent and well educated. Generally speaking, computer careers require at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. There are some jobs that only require a high school or an associate’s degree, but they don’t pay nearly as much as those that you can acquire with a bachelor’s degree. Post-graduate degrees like a master's or even a doctorate can also help you increase your skills and enhance your ability to demand a higher wage. Additionally, some IT jobs may require you to have additional experience or certifications in order to be considered for a position.

Work Environment
Computer careers come in all shapes and sizes. The best computer careers offer individuals the opportunity to find employment on their own terms. Of course there is the traditional office environment. The 9-to-5 workaday model often fits well with those who choose a computer career. However, the best computer careers also allow workers to be a freelancer that sets their own hours or to telecommute from home via the internet. A good computer career allows someone to make a living no matter his or her personality type or preferred method of working.

Choosing a computer career is a very personal decision, but it can be extremely rewarding to the right individuals. Luckily there is enough opportunity and flexibility in this field to accommodate nearly anyone who wants to pursue it.
