Pros / There are hundreds of page templates to choose from.
Cons / You can’t create cartoons in the program; they have to be inserted.
Verdict / Comic Life is great for laying out your comic book, but it doesn’t have the functionality you need to create your images
Comic Life, by Plasa, is comic book software that can easily organize your cartoons into a comic book format. It has hundreds of layout templates available for you to fill with customizable backgrounds, text bubbles and images. You can import artwork by browsing through your image files and using the drag-and-drop feature to insert them.
The software’s functionality is really quite intuitive and easy to figure out. One aspect that could be either cool or annoying is the various sound effects that accompany each movement. When you stretch text, you hear a stretching noise; when you move something, you hear rustling. Kids will eat this comic creator up – the sound effects, image adjustment capabilities and editable word balloons would entertain them for hours. That being said, this comic book software package wouldn’t be the best fit for someone trying to get his or her comics published.
Since Comic Life isn’t the type of comic maker software that allows you to actually create the cartoon characters, it is missing a few features like layering, pen tablet compatibility and character templates. Furthermore, you can only export your complete comic in either JPEG or PDF format, or you can share your finished comic book via Facebook or email. If you'd prefer a program that offers more illustration tools, you should consider Comic Creator.
Comic Life is compatible with both Windows and Mac. However, Facebook exporting is not possible for Windows users. Since this comic book software can only be downloaded, you will need to have internet access. You will also need some spare memory, as this program requires over 1GB of RAM.
For assistance with Comic Life’s software, you can turn to the downloadable user manual or the Comic Life website, where you will find tons of information. They have a PAQs section (Pre-emptively Answered Questions) and a forum where you’ll find answers to commonly asked questions. No phone number is available, but email assistance is available through the online email form.
Comic Life is a great comic maker package for those looking to make a fun comic strip for family memories or the like. However, it isn’t a serious solution for those seeking to organize and publish a graphic novel.
