When it comes to software that can convert Blu-ray discs (BDs) to the more common DVD format, Xilisoft Blu-ray to DVD Converter seems to be an obvious frontrunner; the program boasts one of the best Blu-ray rippers that we’ve reviewed, a versatile feature set superior to many competitors and a sharp user interface that's accessible and suitable for both beginner and advanced users. For these reasons and more, this application earns the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for Blu-ray to DVD converter software.

Copy Features

Where this software really succeeds is its feature set. You will find many standard capabilities including the ability to rip Blu-ray discs, adjustment of video effects, video frame cropping and real-time previews. The software also boasts batch conversion and the ability to add artistic effects to truly personalize your DVD copies. What we found to be most noteworthy though is the fact that it's the only Blu-ray to DVD converter software we tested that allows you to create your own DVD menus on your copies. This feature is especially nice if you want to trim and merge certain clips of a BD to create an entirely custom output DVD.

As mentioned above, the most disappointing thing about this software is it requires a third-party application to remove disc copy and region restrictions. The manufacturer recommends using a program called AnyDVD HD, a Windows-compatible driver that automatically removes the protection of encrypted BDs in the background of your computer. We found this rather surprising and extremely inconvenient since it means you have to purchase an additional program just to make Xilisoft Blu-ray to DVD Converter even functional. We definitely expected built-in decryption capabilities from software as intuitive, well-rounded and pricey as this one.

Conversion Features

Since Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper can convert BDs to a wide range of video formats. It offers preset conversion settings (e.g. video size, video quality, etc.) for specific output formats, which we found to be ideal for an easier and quicker conversion process, though you do lose some customizability. The settings can also be manually adjusted under profile settings. There's a preview screen that allows you to see what your output video will look like when certain features such as a watermark or subtitles are applied.

The software performed very well in each of our test runs, producing output videos that preserved the overall quality of the original BD. In fact, while we could detect a slight loss in quality in many competitors, we couldn't detect any with Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper. We were amazed at the sharpness and clarity of the picture and we also couldn't detect any quality loss in the audio.

Disc Creation Features

Another surprising thing about this Blu-ray to DVD converter software is even though it is marketed as such, it is actually not an all-in-one solution. The Xilisoft converter package is comprised of two separate applications that can be used in conjunction: Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper and Xilisoft DVD Creator, which is a burning engine. We actually like how it includes an easy-to-use burning engine that is similar to and compatible with the Blu-ray ripper program. However, if you already have a preferred burning engine, consider the much more economical alternative of purchasing Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper as standalone software.

Both Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper and DVD Creator have attractive and well-designed interfaces that will likely appeal to users with a broad range of computer skills. Additionally, each application is very easy to use; we had no trouble whatsoever navigating the program and you should be able to use it without any issue even if you are inexperienced with computers. You can access all supplementary features and functionalities of the applications using the basic top navigation bars.

Help & Support

Like most Blu-ray to DVD converter software, Xilisoft offers technical support that's average at best. The manufacturer's website has a comprehensive tutorial and FAQs for the DVD Creator but oddly nothing for its Blu-ray ripper. It does, however, provide a handful of email addresses and an online contact form that you can use to contact Xilisoft. We sent a customer inquiry to the company via email and were pleasantly surprised when we received a response within 24 hours. One thing we'd like to see on the website that our other top-ranked products have is discussion boards or a user forum where you can ask technical questions and receive feedback from other users of the application.

Summary

Our biggest contention with this otherwise excellent Blu-ray to DVD converter software is its lack of built-in decryption. While some users may not consider it an issue, we feel you shouldn't have to pay extra on top of the purchase price just to make the software actually work. That being said, its unmatched output quality and multifaceted functionality are superb and make Xilisoft Blu-ray to DVD Converter a top contender.
