Pros / ProgeCAD Pro includes more than 11,000 2D/3D symbols, which is many more than comparable programs.

Cons / Many design tools are absent, including animations, a house wizard and photo-realistic rendering.

Verdict / If you're creating simple designs that don't need extensive rendering, ProgeCAD Pro can help you complete your modeling tasks.

Editor's Note: There is a new version of progeCAD available. Clicking on the buy button will take you to this new version for purchase. We will rank and review this new program when we next update CAD software. For now, enjoy our review for progeCAD 2016.

ProgeCAD Pro is a great resource if you're creating 2D designs. Compared to the best CAD software, 3D functionality is a bit lacking, but ProgeCAD still has plenty of editing tools for a wide range of products.

This software has a few helpful design tools, including hatching, textures and lighting effects. However, considering the animation technology we have today, the rendered graphics in this CAD program are very poorly presented. Also, it takes much longer for a design to render than it would in a comparable program. Animations, a house wizard and photorealistic rendering are all missing from this program. Your designs may be accurate, but they won't be presentable until you move them out of the program into real life. If you want a program that offers photo realistic rendering, you might be interested in SketchUp Pro.

The interface of progeCAD drawing software isn't the easiest to use, but there are some helpful features to make designing less difficult. The tool palette is customizable and a command line allows you to quickly input data. Although you can import other existing designs, there is no setup wizard or tool to speed up the process of a new model or design.

The editing tools included with ProgeCAD are possibly the best part of the software. All of the standard features are present, such as text and color editing, a layer manager, a point marker and a few others. Included with the software are over 11,000 2D symbols and prebuilt components to add to your designs, which is a vast deal more than is offered by other competitors.

The professional version of ProgeCAD has limited file compatibility with native DWG and DXF support but not much else. The CAD software does have a DXF converter so you can convert PDFs to a readable DXF file. You are able to save in DWF and DGN formats as well. Disappointingly, there’s no raster image support. Simply put, a raster image, or bitmap, is a way to represent a digital image using pixels. Raster images encompass a variety of familiar formats, including JPG, GIF, PNG and TIFF. When it comes to CAD software, the ability to export raster images is useful because they are not an editable format; you can share them with others but no one can make changes to your design.

The software’s publisher offers a handful of useful resources that can help you become more familiar with the application and lessen its inherent learning curve, which is steeper than most. The user guide can be downloaded as a PDF. With nearly 700 pages, it can be a bit cumbersome to browse, but it offers valuable information on how to use the software. There’s also a built-in help section that’s accessed directly from the interface and can be searched by topic or keyword.

To receive direct technical support, you must purchase a support plan from the manufacturer because it's only free for the first month after you purchase your license. The support plan doesn’t include telephone support (only support via email), which is disappointing but rather common among CAD software publishers. Online forums are also missing from the company's website, so you won't be able to find help from the community either.

Summary

ProgeCAD Pro offers decent 2D functionality and usability. The editing tools are quite impressive and are easily the best thing about this software. It also comes with 11,000 2D symbols that you can use to build a design. However, its cumbersome interface, steep learning curve and subpar support hold the software back from outshining its competitors.
