Pros / You can create a range of discs – audio, video and data – with this CD-burning software application.
Cons / There are two separate applications within this program, and you must pick the right one in order to access the right tools for your project. This distinction is important and confusing, because it could throw off first-time users.
Verdict / DVD MovieFactory Pro 7 has excellent CD-burning features that should satisfy the needs of anyone who purchases it.
DVD MovieFactory Pro 7 by Corel is excellent CD-burning software application for many reasons. First, and most importantly, this application makes ripping, copying and burning CDs easy. Second, this application has the ability to convert audio files to different formats and erase rewritable compact discs. And, although it may not be as simple as other software we reviewed, anyone should be able to learn and use the software to its fullest potential. This software application earns the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for CD burner software.
- Ease of Use
- Time to Burn Audio CD
- Time to Burn Data CD
The first thing you should know about DVD Movie Factory Pro 7 is that it is split into two separate applications: DVD MovieFactory Pro 7 and DVD MovieFactory Pro 7 Launcher. Launcher has the most useful CD-burner tools. If you use the other application, MovieFactory Pro 7, you're limited to only burning video CDs. This is confusing at first, but once you figure out the difference, everything is straightforward.
The CD burner features are divided into four sections: "Home," "Capture & Import," "Create & Edit," and "Burn." These sections are self-explanatory – if you want to rip a CD to your hard drive, you'll find that tool under "Capture & Import." If you're looking to copy a CD or burn an original data or audio CD, then click "Burn." There are also shortcuts for burning data and audio discs under the "Home" tab.
Once you've selected the task you want to perform, MovieFactory Launcher opens the main application. This is where you find all of the options and controls that catapulted this application to the top of our lineup. Audio discs created by MovieFactory are high quality, and if you're duplicating a disc you already own, the copy will be just as good as the original. Audio discs will work in any CD, DVD or Blu-ray player, or optical drive.
One of the more useful features found in MovieFactory is its ability to convert audio files from one format to another. Supported file formats include Au, MP3, MP4, MPA, OGG, WAV and WMA. That's a good selection of some of the popular audio formats, but it's far from comprehensive.
This software is compatible with all types of writeable compact discs. Keep in mind that, as the name suggests, there is more to this software than simply burning CDs. Using this application, you can author original video DVDs and duplicate non-encrypted DVDs. You can even write a Blu-ray data disc. But if want to burn video to a Blu-ray, you'll have to get a separate application for that.
We tested all 10 CD burners on our side-by-side comparison chart. According to the results of our timing tests, DVD MovieFactory burned a full music album in less than two minutes. This is one of the fastest audio burn times of the products we reviewed. However, it took about four minutes to burn a data disc to capacity. This isn't the fastest time we recorded, but it's not slow enough that it should deter you from buying the program.
One more feature worth mentioning is its ability to erase and reuse blank CDs. If you buy rewritable CDs, this program can delete what you've already burned, freeing it up to be used again. This is a good tool if you don't want to spend extra money buying spindles of blank CDs.
This CD-burning software application has the most comprehensive set of customization tools of the 10 programs we reviewed. You have so many options at your disposal: You can build a new audio disc with tracks saved on your hard drive, you can create data discs (but you're not limited to CDs with this option), and you can also burn data DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Creating a data disc is an excellent way to back up your most important files and folders, which can be quite handy in the event that other backups (like external hard drives or cloud services) fail.
This software also comes with audio-editing tools that allow you to create custom audio files to burn to a CD. This is practical for users who want to burn their own creations to a disc to share with friends and family. It's also great for singers and bands looking to make a demo disc.
