AVS DVD Authoring

This DVD authoring software manages to create a rare blend of power and simplicity. AVS DVD Authoring uses a wizard-based workflow model to walk you through the possible difficulties commonly associated with DVD authoring software. This DVD menu maker also gives you the ability to customize your menus to truly make them your own.

To keep the software easy to use, AVS DVD Authoring has sacrificed some additional features such as slideshow functionality and a built-in DVD player. For these reasons, we couldn't give it one of our top spots, although its simplicity and unique purchase model defiantly make it worth trying.

Some of AVS' additional features include broad input-format compatibility, a built-in burning engine and the ability to insert an opening sequence. We also like that the menu displays the linking structure of the screen using arrows.

You can also adjust the resolution quality of your final disc, between high quality and lower quality. This is great if your video is really long but you need to fit it on a single-layer DVD.

AVS DVD Authoring is simply a no-frills DVD menu creator. It doesn't include any video editing features aside from the ability to create chapters using a timeline view. It can't create a slideshow, add music or include video transitions either. Furthermore, you can not directly import video files from a DV or HD camcorder without an additional software download.

The most crucial feature missing from AVS DVD Authoring is a playback screen to previews the menu and movie you've constructed to check their functionality. Although we really like the simplicity of AVS DVD Authoring, we feel that this is a critical missing feature, and it is therefore one of the main reasons AVS is not in the top spot on our lineup.

However, we'd like to point out that AVS' payment options are unconventional. A subscription purchase of AVS DVD Authoring also gives you free, unlimited access to the company's other multimedia products, including the Video Converter, Video Editor, DV to DVD, Video to iPod and more. Most of the features and functionality missing from AVS DVD Authoring software can be found in one of these other products, which you can download for free with your subscription.

The best thing about AVS DVD Authoring is its pure simplicity, which is benefited greatly by the introductory wizard. Although the software is missing a few typical features such as slideshow support and a built-in DVD player, we found that this DVD creation software gives you a fair amount of control over the menus and other aspects of DVD production, and then produces excellent DVDs.
