PROS / This software burns some of the highest-quality DVDs in our review.
CONS / It's missing the ability to split a large commercial disc into two smaller blank DVDs.
VERDICT / Despite some small flaws, Xilisoft DVD Copy is one of the best DVD burning applications on the market.
Editor’s Note: The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) forbids circumventing copy encryptions contained on commercial discs. The DMCA makes no exceptions for circumventing these encryptions for personal use. Top Ten Reviews does not endorse piracy or any other illegal activity.
Xilisoft DVD Copy burns high-quality duplicates of your DVD movies easily and quickly and allows you to archive your movie library by saving a disc's ISO file to your hard drive. It's missing some of the customization features we look for, but this shouldn't be enough to preclude you from buying the DVD burning software.
Anyone with even basic computer skills can use this program to make copies of their DVDs. The entire interface is a single screen that contains all the software's copy and customization tools. When you launch the software, it provides simple instructions on how to load a disc and begin the copying process. Once it begins, you should have a new copy of your movie in about 40 minutes.
This DVD copier comes with an integrated CSS decrypter. You'll never see this tool, because it's automatic. It is nevertheless an important feature, because it allows you to bypass copy encryptions found on almost all commercial discs. These protections are meant to be a bulwark against illegal piracy. The decrypter in this program allows you to make personal copies of the DVDs you already own.
Making new physical discs is only one aspect of this DVD copy software. It also allows you save a disc's ISO file to your hard drive. An ISO file is the blueprint of a DVD and acts as a virtual disc that you can watch on your computer's DVD player software. Storing an ISO file also enables you to burn new copies of your DVD whenever you wish without needing the physical disc.
This program can make both identical and compressed copies of your DVDs. Making an exact copy with no quality loss requires you to copy onto a blank dual-layered disc (DVD-9). Only these discs have enough storage capacity to hold all the content on a commercial disc.
If you copy your DVD to a smaller-capacity DVD-5, the program compresses the content to fit onto that disc. This option causes some quality loss to the new disc. When we watched a compressed copy of our test disc, we only noted minor pixelation in the finer details of the movie's picture. Compressed copies created by this program are among the best of all the products in our review.
Another backup feature in this DVD burner is the ability to extract the raw files and folders found on a disc. This is known as a Video_TS folder, and unlike an ISO file, it gives you access to the raw video and audio files found on a DVD. Once this is on your computer, you can use other applications to convert your movies for playback on devices other than a computer or DVD player. And as with the ISO file, you can use the Video_TS folder to burn new copies of a DVD without needing the original disc as a source.
This software has three main burning modes: Full Copy, Main Movie and Custom. These all do what you'd expect. Full Copy burns everything on the original disc. Main Movie only burns the feature presentation and leaves out all bonus material. And Custom mode allows you to pick and choose what DVD content you want to burn onto a new disc.
These options are useful, but this program is missing some of the customization tools we look for in the best DVD burning software. Some of the other products on our lineup have the ability to convert your DVD movies into video files that you can sync to smartphones, tablets and gaming systems. Others can automatically split a commercial disc into two blank DVD-5s, with the main movie on one and everything else on the other. These aren't must-have features, but if they had been included, this program would be even more useful than it is now.
Given how easy this software is to learn and use, it's unlikely that you'll need technical support. But in case you do, this software's website offers a FAQs section that covers most issues you may have. You'll also find how-to guides that walk you through the software's tools step by step.
In the event you have an issue that isn't covered by the FAQs section or tutorials, you can contact the company via the email address provided under the support section of the website. It usually takes about two days for the company to respond to an inquiry.
Xilisoft DVD Copy is an excellent choice for DVD burning software. It burns both exact and compressed copies of your DVD movies. The compressed copies it makes are superior to those of almost all the other products on our lineup. It doesn't have all the minor customization features we look for, but what it does have works well and produces high-quality results.
