Xilisoft DVD Copy earned a spot in our review of the best DVD copy software on the market. It's easy enough for anyone to use and creates an excellent copy in less than an hour. While it doesn't have every tool we look for in this category, it has all the most important ones.
The first thing to like about this software is that it's extremely easy to use. The entire interface is a single screen that contains all the program's tools and features. When you've loaded a DVD into the interface, you can begin the copy process in a single click. Anyone with basic computer skills should be able to use this software with no problems.
Most retail DVDs are encrypted to guard against illegal piracy. Unfortunately, they also prevent you from making personal copies of the movies you've paid for. This program has a built-in CSS decrypter that automatically bypasses these protections, allowing you to copy, customize and archive your DVD library that you've spent a lot of time and money acquiring.
It takes about 40 minutes to copy a DVD with this software. This is true whether you are making an exact, compressed or customized copy of your disc. This is about the average copy time for all the programs we reviewed.
Every DVD has an ISO file (sometimes referred to as an ISO image). This file is the blueprint of a disc. It contains the main movie, bonus features, menu structure, chapter breaks, closed captions and anything else on the disc. This program allows you to save this file to your computer. It then acts as a virtual disc that you can use in DVD player software as though it were a physical disc.
You can also use this program to burn a new copy of your DVD from an ISO file. This means that you'll still have your DVD even if you don't have the original disc. If you have a large DVD library, archiving their ISO files on an external hard drive or in the cloud is an excellent way to protect them against, damage, loss and obsolescence.
This DVD copy software can make both identical and compressed copies of your movies. If you make an exact copy of a commercial disc, you need to use a dual-layered blank disc (DVD-9). This is because these discs have enough storage space to duplicate the original disc with no quality loss.
If you copy to a blank DVD-5, the software compresses the movie to fit onto the smaller capacity disc. This results in some quality loss when you watch the new DVD. However, this quality loss is minimal. When our video experts examined the compressed copy of our test DVD, they found it to be one of the highest-quality copies in our review. We noted only minor points of pixelation on the small details of the video. This is a stark contrast to most of the lower-ranked products on our review that had near-constant distortion, bad pixelation and compression artifact.
This DVD copy software has three copy modes: Full Copy, Main Movie and Custom. These modes do exactly what they sound like. When you want to duplicate the entire DVD, Main Movie only copies the feature presentation, and Custom allows you to pick and choose which content you want to make it onto the new disc. These are basic customization tools, but they are very useful in making sure you get the exact copy you want.
There are a few tools found in other products in our review that are missing from Xilisoft DVD Copy. This software doesn't have any options to merge content from two different DVDs onto one disc. This would be good for making anthology DVDs. It also lacks the ability to automatically split a commercial disc into two DVD-5s, with the main movie on one disc and all the bonus features on the other.
It also doesn't have the ability to convert your movies into stand-alone video files that you can use in media players like smartphones and tablets. None of these omissions are deal breakers. But if they had been included, the usefulness of this software would greatly increase.
As simple as this software is to use, you'll probably never have to seek help using it. If you do find yourself in that situation, you can consult the software's official website, which has a FAQs section and a knowledgebase with tutorials on how to use the software. If you have a customer support issue, you can email the company directly with your problem. The company usually responds within 48 hours.
There isn't much to complain about with Xilisoft DVD Copy. It makes excellent-quality copies of your DVDs, compressed or not. You can also use it to archive your discs digitally and make copies well after the original disc has been lost to time. It is missing some of the minor features we look for, but nothing that should keep you from buying the software.
