PROS / It's compatible with multiple operating systems and video formats.
CONS / It has no lossless audio playback.
VERDICT / This is a simple player with extensive compatibility, but it lacks many features and optimization settings, and it requires the most CPU usage of the software we reviewed.
The Aurora Blu-ray Player is a decent software option for playing videos on your computer. Though it doesn't have all the features of players on the top end of our lineup, this simple software works on multiple operating systems with a huge variety of video formats. It lets you tweak audio and picture settings, though not to the extent that you can with more comprehensive DVD software, and offers extensive customer support options.
You'll have no problem watching a wide variety of video formats on this DVD software, whether they are physical discs or digital video file types, including MP4, WMV, AVI, MKV and MOV, the most common. As for operating systems, the software is available for recent versions of both Windows and Mac OS X. However, the software is not yet compatible with Windows 10.
The digital video player had the highest CPU consumption of any on our lineup, averaging about 47 percent during our testing. While the player has decent performance otherwise and works fine if you just want to watch a movie, your computer may struggle with multitasking if you want to use other programs. After testing, we thought the software could be more intuitive and easy to use. However, it loads physical video discs quickly, taking barely 15 seconds from shutting the tray to playing it.
The software has Dolby and DTS support, giving you high-quality audio even if you listen with your headphones or connect it via HDMI to an external system. The auto-resume playback setting is handy, as it remembers where you leave off in a video and resumes it from the same spot if you start watching it again. However, it offers no HD or 3D upscaling ability, lossless audio playback, or playback smoothing, limiting the control you have over your playback experience.
Aurora allows you to change the region setting multiple times, so you can watch flicks from around the world. It also has subtitles, which let you enjoy foreign films or understand difficult dialogue. The social media connectivity lets you share what you're watching and comments with your friends on sites like Twitter. To make it further your own, the software lets you customize the player skin, and it is compatible with Windows 8 touchscreen-compatible computers.
There are multiple options for you to get technical support for this DVD player software. If you just have a simple question, you may only need to consult the knowledgebase on its website, which contains FAQs with solutions, or you can check out the product tutorials. If you have bigger questions or concerns, you can talk directly to customer service representatives via email. The software also offers free upgrades for life.
The Aurora Blu-ray Player lets you watch your entire movie library easily from your computer. It gives you some control over your audio and picture settings, though it lacks some useful abilities. Despite the fact that it doesn't have all the features and capabilities of other software on our lineup, this movie player software is a great option for simply watching a variety of video formats without the fuss.
