Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because it no longer ranks as a top 10 product. The original review is below, but check out our current top 10 about DVD Ripper Software here.
Over the years, DVD Cloner has topped the charts in several TopTenREVIEWS side-by side-comparison charts. Its wide-spread dominance over several categories is due, in part, to the quality of the copy it produces and the included CSS decryption, coupled with its fantastically intuitive interface. These features alone make it a hard product to beat in any category we place it in. Such is the case with DVD ripper software.
Of the DVD ripper applications we reviewed, DVD Cloner 2014 has the most features and capabilities. It touts the fastest copy times and yields high quality results. The software allows you to easily copy a DVD-5 to DVD-5 and a DVD-9 to DVD-9. Additionally, it features built-in CSS decryption that allows you to rip commercial DVDs. Breaking this encryption is essential if you want to back up your DVD and Blu-ray collection.
DVD Cloner 2014 lets you copy, rip and burn your DVDs and Blu-rays. Further, it gives you the ability to rip and copy Blu-ray discs without the need for an additional download plugin, a bonus that other DVD ripping software doesn’t provide.
We are impressed with the application’s ability to create a perfect 1:1 copy of a DVD. It will copy a DVD-5 to DVD-5 and a DVD-9 to DVD-9. It maintains excellent quality, creates the copy quickly and is simple to navigate. As we mentioned above, you can use DVD Cloner to remove the various protections placed on DVDs and Blu-rays, including CSS, Sony ARCCOS and regional protections. In addition to this must-have feature, we are also impressed that this application lets you choose from two different interfaces: one for novices and one for advanced users. This design feature is unique to DVD Cloner, and we found it very beneficial.
DVD Cloner includes three video converters with purchase. The DVD to AVI, DVD to MPEG and DVD to SVCD converters do exactly what their names indicate. If you are less concerned with physical DVD backups, you will find that MPEG, VCD or AVI rips are fast alternatives to full DVD clones. Just be sure to remember that DVD Cloner itself doesn’t rip DVDs to AVI or MPEG files. For file conversion, you have to use the aforementioned converters.
The only potential gripe we foresee with this DVD ripper software concerns its lack of support for virtual drives and mounting DVD image files. DVD Cloner 2014 reads and rips disc image files perfectly well, but if you want to manage virtual disc drives, dabble in ISO image editing or create DVD and Blu-ray image backups, you will have to purchase additional third-party software.
DVD Cloner 2014 is ultimately a seamless conglomeration of a number of compelling products. The full DVD copy suite copies and backs up DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, whereas other included subprograms handle video conversion. For converting DVDs to iPod-ready formats, be sure to check the upgraded version called DVD Cloner Platinum, which comes with iPod-Cloner. This is designed to easily and quickly prepare DVD videos for use on your iDevice. iPod-Cloner rips video straight from a DVD and converts it to MP4, XviD, H264, MP3, AAC or M4A.
One of the great design aspects of DVD Cloner is that the application uses advanced technology to make the DVD ripping process extremely fast and easy. The software automatically detects the disc format and screen ratio, as well as scenes, chapters and episodes. Professional transcoding technology is used to convert the movie format and maintain high picture and sound quality. The compression rate can also be adjusted to fit more content on one disc while optimizing the quality. In short, the software uses superior technology and is completely flexible. When you make a copy with this software, you can be confident that the picture and sound quality of the original will be perfectly replicated in the copy.
In our test run, this software’s video converters performed well. We had a beautiful digitized version of our test DVD in minutes. During playback, it looked pristine and matched our resolution and bitrate configurations. Because DVDs and Blu-ray Discs are undergoing constant formatting changes, it’s important to remember to keep drivers and file updates current on this software. Any problems we encountered were usually due to outdated HD upgrades.
Help & Support
DVD Cloner is especially easy to use for everyday functions like making identical DVD clones and burning AVI files to DVD. You simply insert the disc you would like to copy, begin the ripping process and then insert a blank DVD. The software provides preset options for typical operations: making a DVD backup, a DVD copy or a DVD copy omitting the special and bonus features. The startup menu includes one-click options that will allow you to put two movie files on one DVD. It also gives you the option to burn a file stored on a hard disk to a DVD-R.
Even though the software has several components under the hood, it comes together effectively in one comprehensive suite. The step-by-step instructions walk you through the entire process of ripping, formatting (if needed) and burning a DVD. The user interface is well designed for aesthetics and usability, making the DVD ripper software easy to use and straightforward.
The software is set by default to rip and burn at maximum speed, but if you have a slower PC and want to run another task at the same time, you can always adjust the speed. The software obviously runs slower when you reduce the speed, but it reduces the amount of system requirements the software needs, freeing up power and resources for other applications.
This software performs impressively, both for typical DVD ripping and burning and for dabbling in Blu-ray backup. The straightforward interface takes a lot of the guesswork out of ripping and burning DVDs, and the software does a lot of the work automatically. For instance, it recognizes the disc format, screen ratio and the reader and burner. No matter what your demands are, DVD Cloner 2014 is solid DVD ripper software that works.
