Ripping a feature-length movie with this software takes anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour on the program’s default settings. This isn’t the fastest time of the products we tested, but it’s fast enough to produce a high-quality rip and conversion. It takes about three clicks to start ripping and converting a DVD if you use the program’s default settings.
It also makes manageable file sizes, between 1GB and 2GB for a feature film, so your movies won’t fill up your computer’s hard drive too quickly. In fact, of the DVD rippers in our review, WonderFox yielded the smallest file sizes.
Nearly every commercial DVD is copy protected, which means you can’t rip and convert it if your DVD ripper program doesn’t have a decrypter. WonderFox can bypass these copy encryptions so you can make personal digital copies of the movies you’ve bought and paid for. It’s automatic, so you don’t have to do anything to use this tool.
There may be times when you don’t want to rip the video of a DVD movie. For example, you may want to extract the songs on the end credits without the video of scrolling names. This software lets you rip only the audio portions of a DVD movie or other content. It also lets you choose from several audio file types, so if you want an MP3 or an AIFF file, you can choose which you prefer.
This software also lets you capture closed captions for the hearing impaired. But you should keep in mind that this option keeps the text on the screen for the duration of the film and doesn’t give you the option to turn it off.
WonderFox includes most of the ripping tools we look for in this category, but it is missing some features that are found in other products in our review. It can’t rip a DVD’s ISO file (disc image) or Video_TS folder to your computer’s hard drive. This would be useful because it would allow you to make a virtual copy of your disc for back up or archiving purposes. That way if the original disc ever becomes damaged or lost, you can easily burn a new copy without needing the source disc.
This program includes most of the customization features we look for in the best DVD ripper software. You can trim away unwanted footage, crop the frame and add fun filters to your movie before you rip it. You can also adjust technical aspects of your video like resolution, frame rate and bit rate. In addition, you can choose to adjust the quality of your conversion if you want to speed up the time it takes to rip the movie from its source disc.
