PROS / You can tag people in your photos, which simplifies organizing and searching.
CONS / Corel doesn't offer online photo storage for this program.
VERDICT / Though it has slightly fewer organizing options than the top two products, this program still offers a wide range of editing tools and features. The interface is simple to navigate, which makes tagging and finding photos a simple task.
It is easy to find photo organizing software that features decent editing tools, but it isn't as easy to find a photo organizer that's also simple to navigate. Corel's PaintShop Pro is incredibly user-friendly and simplifies both the photo editing and organizing processes with its well-designed interface. It also features some of the best photo editing tools in our review. For these reasons we have awarded PaintShop Pro the Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award.
PaintShop Pro has a simple layout that makes finding and editing photos easy. The program is split into three different tabs: Manage, Adjust and Edit. The Manage tab is where photos can be organized and searched for. This program allows you to organize your photos by using keyword tags, calendar dates, ratings, places and even by tagging individual people. After you have used these organization features, searching through your photos is simple. After you tag your photos the program will create files containing all of the images that you have tagged and will help you find the photos you are looking for faster.
General information, EXIF and IPTC data can be accessed directly from the Manage tab whenever a photo is selected. While the IPTC data can be edited, the EXIF data cannot. This means that it is impossible to change a photo's EXIF creation time and date in this picture organizer. Unfortunately, you cannot search for duplicates within this program, either, which makes deleting repeat images more of a hassle.
Losing your photos is a photographer's nightmare, which is why it helps when photo organizing software comes with a backup manager. You can access PaintShop Pro's Database Backup feature to create a backup file on your computer in case something should happen to your regular photo folder.
PaintShop Pro is compatible with 80 different file types, which is a lot more files than the average picture organizing program. These files include JPG, PSD, PNG, TIFF and RAW files. The program can also access pictures from a flash drive, scanner, smartphone or camera from within the software.
With nearly the best image quality in our review, PaintShop Pro is a good choice for image editing. This photo organizer includes 99 special effects filters in addition to basic touchup tools like red eye removal, brushes and cropping abilities. This program features some of the best advanced editing tools as well. You can use layers to edit your photos so as to protect the original photo while still seeing what certain effects will have on it. You can create HDR images, correct lens distortion and make color adjustments.
PaintShop Pro allows you to share photos directly to Facebook, Flickr and Google+. However, it doesn't allow you to send photos via email. While sharing to social media sites, it lets you choose the image quality of your uploads. Unlike most other programs in this review, PaintShop Pro doesn't have the ability to create slideshows or videos. This software also doesn’t come with any online photo gallery storage, so you will have to find a place to store your photos.
You can find dozens of Corel's video tutorials on its YouTube channel. These tutorials range from minor editing explanations to advanced ones, so you will have a wide range of tutorials to learn from. Corel's website also features an extensive knowledgebase. A search bar on the FAQs page allows you to find answers to your questions quickly. If you still haven't found the information you seek, you can email or phone a customer representative or enter the user forum to find answers from others.
With one of the best photo organizer interfaces in our comparison, PaintShop Pro is simple to use and still provides plenty of organizing and editing options. The editing capabilities are relatively advanced but are simple enough that a novice photographer will feel comfortable using them. While this program lacks the ability to create slideshows and doesn't come with online photo storage, it does allow you to post your photos to Facebook, Flickr and Google+ with just a few simple clicks.
