The universe of professional video editing software is dominated by a few major names. EDIUS Pro provides a simple alternative to the industry leaders. It does so by offering a program that has all the tools the competition has with a simplified interface that’s accessible to most video editors who have at least some training.
The interface and workflows found in EDIUS Pro are pretty much on par with the other professional non-linear video editors in our lineup. It's approachable for the new user while providing the tools that seasoned veterans require. It does require a bit of knowledge but not nearly as much as some of the established pro video editors.
As far as non-linear editors go, this application is as good a tool as any editor in our buying guide. It has powerful tools, an enhanced timeline, advanced multicam support, 64-bit processing and all the other goodies that make professional video editing software suitable for professionals.
What sets EDIUS Pro apart from the rest of the competition is that it has eliminated the rendering from the editing process. This is a big advantage over other applications that require time and processing capacity to render footage, even if it now happens in the background.
There is one peculiarity of this software that is worth mentioning. This is the only professional video editor that doesn’t utilize GPU acceleration. This means it relies solely on your machine’s processor to encode videos when your project exports. However, there are some transitions in the program that take advantage of GPU acceleration. Additionally, for some very specific systems, you can employ the hardware acceleration option using Intel’s Quick Sync technology. This can be useful if you’re encoding videos in the H.264 codec or burning a DVD or Blu-ray disc.
When you’re done with your video editing project, EDIUS Pro offers a decent variety of file formats you can export to. It can handle any aspect ratio, codec and resolution you need. Even the increasingly popular 4K display resolution is supported. You can also author a DVD or Blu-ray disc right from within the program.
EDIUS Pro is a solid alternative to the established video editing applications. It can do pretty much anything that the industry-standard programs can. However, there’s nothing that makes it superior to them.
