MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2016 is video editing software that delivers professional-level tools in a consumer-grade application. And it does so in a way that doesn't intimidate the novice user. This is important because it opens up a whole new world of possibilities to the creative mind that may not yet have the highest skill set when it comes to video editing. It earns the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award in our review of the best video editing applications.
The most striking difference between MAGIX Movie Edit Pro and the other video editing software in our review is an innovation that MAGIX calls "object-based editing." In every other video editing application, each element has dedicated tracks on the timeline. For example, video goes on one track, audio on another, etc. The tracks in this application are fundamentally different in that you can put any kind of media on any track. This dramatically changes how you deal with the timeline. It streamlines the workflow and allows editors to build their projects using fewer tracks.
Another advanced aspect is what is known as proxy editing. This is employed when you're working with higher-resolution footage. Because high-resolution footage takes a long time to render, this video editing software creates lower-quality copies for you to work with. When you're ready to export your project, the high-res counterparts are used to create your finished product. This is a great time saver, which is found in few other video editing applications on the consumer level.
A tool that will please filmmakers is the ability to automatically sync audio and video files that are recorded on separate devices. For example, if you've captured video footage with a traditional camera and supplemental audio with a boom mic or other sound-capturing device, you'll have two files of the same audio. In days gone by, you would have to synchronize these elements by comparing waveforms and lining them up manually. This video editing program analyzes the waveforms for you and automatically syncs your elements. This tool also has great advantages in the multicam-editing mode, when you're dealing with multiple videos of the same event taken with various devices.
This video editing program has a mobile version called MAGIX Movie Edit Touch. It's not nearly as full-bodied as its desktop counterpart, but it does allow you to trim and crop footage, add transition effects and export videos in full HD. A mobile app this powerful was unthinkable just a few years ago. It's available for the Android and Windows mobile operating systems.
Ease of Use
MAGIX Movie Edit Pro has two main editing modes for users to choose from. The simplest to use is the storyboard mode. This sets out all of your story's elements in the order in which they will be used. This is different from the more traditional timeline in that each element is given equal room in the workspace, regardless of how long they run. This makes it much easier for you to rearrange your footage, effects and transitions in the order you want them to appear.
The timeline-editing mode is where experienced editors will find all the intricate granular tools professionals use to create the movies you see in theaters and shows you see on television. Since this is consumer-level software, the applications are not nearly as sophisticated as their professional counterparts, but they are robust enough to satisfy all but the most demanding of users.
There is one minor editing mode worth mentioning – the trailer templates. These are a series of templates that have cuts, transitions and music already in place. All you have to do is drop the footage you want to use into the template. This means you can have a professional-quality movie trailer in just a few minutes. It's not as robust or dynamic as the timeline or storyboard, but it sure is a lot of fun.
When you're finished building your video project, you have a number of options for sharing your creation with an audience. Creating a stand-alone video file is as simple as selecting the quality and size of your video. But you also have granular controls that allow you to fine-tune aspects of your video such as frame rate, aspect ratio and resolution. MAGIX Movie Edit Pro handles both simplicity and advanced control nicely.
You also have the ability to burn your videos onto a disc. This software comes with the ability to author DVDs, Blu-ray discs and AVCHD discs. It also allows you to upload videos directly to online sharing sites such as Facebook and YouTube.
