Pros / You can add up to 200 editing tracks to craft complex video projects.

Cons / It lacks a storyboard mode and omits several advanced features like motion tracking and 360-degree editing.

Verdict / VEGAS Movie Studio 14 Platinum is capable video editing software but falls short when compared to the top programs in our review.

VEGAS Movie Studio 14 Platinum has enough tools and features to make an appearance in our review of the best video editing software. It will meet most of the needs of experienced editors and producers, but key omissions of some basic and advanced functionality keep it in the middling portion of our side-by-side comparison chart.

This movie making software features the familiar timeline workflow. Users who know their way around the timeline format should grasp the essentials of the software with few problems. You can add up to 200 audio/video editing tracks for complex projects, which will more than satisfy the needs of veteran editors. However, beginners, novices and casual users may find the interface daunting. And unlike almost all the other applications in our review, VEGAS lacks the simplified storyboard mode which would help the uninitiated build their projects quickly and easily.

VEGAS has a healthy library of titles, transitions and effects to choose from. Most editors will be satisfied with the toolset that includes advanced features like the chroma key (green screen), video stabilizer, audio mixer, masking tools, 3D editing and more. Some of these tools are easy to find, but others are buried deep within the interface and even knowledgeable editors may have to consult the help section or tutorials to find what they’re looking for. But once learned, these tools are useful and powerful and will be invaluable tools that enable editors to craft both simple and complex videos.

One new feature worthy of note is multi-cam mode. This tool allows you to import and synchronize video footage of an event taken from multiple sources. For example, video of a concert, sports game or other event captured on multiple smartphones can be synced and edited into a single video. This could previously be accomplished manually, but it is extremely difficult and time consuming, even for veteran editors. The multi-cam mode removes all the guesswork and allows you to switch between angles quickly and easily.

As useful as its editing array is, VEGAS still has some catching up to do when compared to some of the other programs on our lineup. For example, this video editor lacks motion tracking capabilities. This would allow you to isolate moving objects and people within a video and apply effects to them as the video progresses. The program also lacks the ability to manipulate 360-degree video. And even though this new tech is still in its infancy, all the award-winning products in our review have tools to work with this type of footage.

When you’re finished crafting your video project with VEGAS Movie Studio, you’ll find the exporting process rather easy to manage. The Make Movie Wizard gives you several options to save a video file to your hard drive, burn a DVD or Blu-ray, and even upload it to sharing sites like YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo. Advanced users will appreciate the customizable render templates that allow them to fine-tune how they want their videos to be exported.

Summary

VEGAS Movie Studio 14 Platinum is both useful and powerful video editing software. It has enough tools to fulfil the needs of many video editors. But it lacks the cutting-edge features that separate the award-winning programs from the rest of the products in our review of the best video editing software.
