Test Results

In this ranking category, we relied on scores from AV-Test, an independent and impartial organization that evaluates the protection, performance and usability of the most popular anti-malware software on the market. Kaspersky Anti-Virus consistently scores highly in all these tests.

At the time of this writing, Kaspersky Anti-Virus had earned 100 percent in AV-Test's protection test, which put it up against more than 14,000 computer threats. The average score for the malware removers in our lineup was considerably lower at 92 percent. Kaspersky Anti-Virus also scored 100 percent in usability tests, meaning it doesn't identify safe code, programs and files as malicious.

In the performance tests, Kaspersky Anti-Virus scored 92 percent. This is above average on our side-by-side comparison chart – the average is 83 percent. This means that Kaspersky is good at utilizing your computer resources so it doesn't slow down your other computer activity. Programs that hog system resources can cause significant lag in activities like downloads, uploads, streaming content and even other applications.

Detection & Removal

When you purchase Kaspersky Anti-Virus, you can use it to protect up to three computers. This is great because these days many people work on multiple computers. The option to install the malware remover on multiple computers saves you a good amount of cash. Some programs on our lineup only let you protect a single computer.

Kaspersky employs what it calls hybrid protection, which uses cloud-based security for online protection and computer-based security for offline protection. Cloud-based security has the advantage of always being in a state of constant evolution to protect your PC from online threats; computer-based security is ideal for protecting your PC from malware that attempts to alter your system when you are offline, such as via a USB drive. Between the two technologies, you can rest easy with 100 percent protection.

This version of Kaspersky is loaded with customization features, yet it can also run light, with little interaction required on your part. You can customize how you want to be alerted and when, how the scans run, and how and when you want the software to update. You can also create lists of websites or applications that you want to allow and adjust each security feature, such as antiphishing settings and scans of chat links.

Kaspersky employs software updates called smart updates that only use roughly 1 percent of your system resources, so your software will always be current without interfering with your PC use. This software is only missing one feature we look for in the best malware removers: a virtual browser. This would allow you to use a specialized web browser to protect you from online threats and secure your sensitive data. However, it does include a virtual keyboard for safely entering usernames and passwords.

Help & Support

Kaspersky provides global support. Its website is localized in more than 30 languages, and the company provides telephone, email and chat support to the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. Online, it posts volumes of support documentation and offers free downloads. For product information and industry news, you can follow Kaspersky on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

There's very little to complain about with Kaspersky Anti-Virus. It has mastered threat identification and eradication. It detects and removes malware. It can also run exactly as you command, and it updates continually without interrupting you. The addition of a virtual browser would make it even more useful. Few security applications can rival Kaspersky.
