Editor’s Note: Top Ten Reviews uses test results from the independent laboratory AV-Test as part of our review process for the best antispyware software. AV-Test looks specifically at protection, performance and usability on multiple versions of Windows operating systems, and it performs these evaluations several times throughout the year. We use the most current AV-Test scores available at the time of our review. It is possible that new AV-Test scores will be released after our review goes live on the site. We will consider these scores during our next review of the best antispyware software.
Avira Antivirus Pro is in our review of the best spyware removers because it protects your computer from all kinds of threats, including common viruses, spyware, rootkits, keyloggers and even ransomware. However, some minor omissions in its tool set keep it out of award-winning territory.
AV-Test is an independent, objective IT security testing institute. Several times a year, it subjects Avira Antivirus Pro and all the other spyware removers on our lineup to a battery of tests. These tests measure how well the software protects your computer from threats, how much of your computer resources it uses and if it flags safe programs as threats. Avira Antivirus Pro performed well in all these tests.
The protection test puts this spyware removal software up against more than 14,000 threats. At the time of this writing, it had scored 92 percent – which was the average score among the antispyware software we reviewed. You generally don't have to worry about your computer becoming infected when you use this software. However, some threats may slip through the cracks.
Avira Antivirus Pro scored perfectly on the other two tests we consider to rank the best spyware removal software. It uses as little processing power as possible so it doesn't cause lag in your other computer activity like downloads, uploads, video games and streaming content. It also scored 100 percent in the usability test, which means that it doesn't flag safe programs and files as malicious. Avira Antivirus Pro provides a seamless experience that lets you forget about it once it's on your computer.
Some shortcomings in this spyware remover keep it out of the top tier of our review. For example, it only allows you to protect a single computer with one license. Other products on our lineup allow you to use them on up to three computers; there's even one that allows you to protect an unlimited number of devices. However, Avira does include the uncommon protection against ransomware, an emerging threat that locks down your computer until you pay a fee to the attackers.
Two tools we look for in the best antispyware software are vulnerability scans and virtual browsers. Both are missing from Avira Antivirus Pro. The former would allow you to access a secure browser specifically designed to prevent spyware infection and protect your private data. The latter scans your computer system and networks for security weaknesses and helps you to correct them. We would like to see Avira add these features in future versions. You can contact support with questions and concerns 24/7, plus on weekends, but there is no live chat support.
Avira Antivirus Pro can protect your computer from almost all threats, including ransomware, and it doesn't slow down your system to do it. It also tested well for avoiding false detections. It's missing some minor features we look for, though, like vulnerability scans and virtual browsers. Also, you need a separate license for each computer you protect with this software. Still, this software has plenty to put it among the best antispyware software.
