Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because it no longer ranks as a top 10 product. The original review is below, but check out our current top 10 about Internet Filter Software here.

imView uses an approach to internet filter software that is different from the other products in our reviews. The program monitors and records a child’s internet activity so that you can view it after the fact. It records most online activities such as websites visited, keywords searched and instant message and email correspondence. imView is a complete keystroke recorder. You can block specific websites and websites that contain certain keywords in the URL. You can remotely access all reports, screenshots and activity. imView includes lists of suggested keywords to block. It also allows you to enter new keywords. This internet filter software operates in stealth mode without the user’s knowledge. You can access your imView account via any internet connection to see the reports that it gathers for you.

If you want to read the email exchanges that a child conducts in Outlook, you can capture all inbound and outbound messages. You can also see the file attachments and any website links. And if you set alerts for inappropriate content within email messages, you will be notified if any of your rules trigger an alert. If you want to monitor Facebook and MySpace, imView internet filter software can capture screenshots every minute or every 10 minutes. You can also take screenshots of instant message screens and websites based on criteria that you establish. You can receive an alert whenever a word or term appears in an instant message or website.

The program is compatible with the Internet Explorer and Firefox web browsers. So you will need to restrict other popular browsers. It records instant message conversations that occur on Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger, Google Talk, Skype Chat and AIM. It captures the chats in real time. In addition to being able to read the chats, you can see the participants and the length of the chat duration.

This software is more designed for monitoring and reporting problems that have occurred than preventing them. Nonetheless, it will block URLs to stop things such as P2P file sharing, porn viewing and downloads. It also makes reports based on the use of prohibited words or phrases. Reporting requires that the parent log onto the company’s website to view what has happened rather than receiving proactive alerts by email or text messages. The web based interface is simple to use. We did not have any trouble figuring out how to block keywords, configure screen shot captures or block URLs. It is easy to read the reports and delete data
