Flash for Smartphone, Amazon Lawsuit...
TopTenREPORTS Your Tech News Resource
Amazon settled their problem of deleting ebooks-even if you paid for it, BlackBerry users can now sync their phones with a Mac, and an Ohio Genius bar worker has to negotiate a hostage situation. Adobe announced the first full version of flash for smart phones. Flash is the software used by many web content providers to stream video and animation online. Mobile browsers haven't had it until now, so mobile devices that could support flash had to run a light version of the software. Without Flash, Internet giants like YouTube were not functional on most mobile devices. Phones equipped with the new software will be fully functional internet browsing devices. There is one glaring omission to this story however; Apple's iPhone and iPod touch were not in the announced lineup to get the new version of the software. Neither Adobe nor Apple has commented on why the best selling smart phone ever won't be getting full flash support. Blackberry phones finally have support on the Mac. Research in Motion released a Blackberry Desktop manager that allows you to sync your phone to the Apple machines. The software will allow users to shift songs and playlists from iTunes to their phones. The program will only run on Macs is 10.5.5 or higher and blackberries running Blackberry OS 4.2 or higher. Up until now Mac users had to use a program called PocketMac for Blackberry in order to sync their phones with iTunes and other features. You can get your blackberry desktop manager by going to Blackberry.com/mac. Microsoft released an "XP Mode" for windows 7 to manufactures. This mode allows computers that run windows 7 to run older applications that were designed for Windows XP. This will alleviate some fears among some companies that the software they have been using for years won't be compatible with the upcoming operating system. This was one of the primary problems with the ill fated Windows Vista. Microsoft spokespeople all say that there aren't many XP programs that won't be compatible with 7 and that XP mode is just a safeguard so business will feel comfortable upgrading to the new OS. Windows 7 is available on October 22. Amazon settled a lawsuit against a teenager high school. They settled out of court for a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The lawsuit stemmed from the Amazon 1984 problem. Back in May Amazon deleted copies of the George Orwell book from thousands of their eBooks due to legal concerns. High school student Justin Gawronski Diderot like this at all and neither did many other people. So he sued them for what he felt was theft for a product he legally bought. This case brought up many questions about digital property rights. Do you actually own copies of the eBooks you download if Amazon can just decide to remotely delete them? Many people were hoping the courts would shed some light on that topic. But with this settlement that question still remains unanswered. What do you do when your tech gadget doesn't do what you want? Donald Goodrich held his hostage at the Apple Store. That's right he walked into an Ohio Apple retail store location and told the attendant at the genius bar the he would "pop a 9 millimeter at it." He then brandished his gun and threatened to shoot the device again. The apple store employee tried to talk Goodrich down while her manager called the cops. Needless to say he was arrested and charged with aggravated menacing. No word on the fate of the iPhone.
