New Apple Line, Release of Verizon's Droid...
TopTenREPORTS Your Tech News Resource
This week on TopTenREPORTS, Windows 7 comes out swinging, YouTube is stealing from Twitter and Apple might just crash the Windows 7 party. Forget Microsoft's Vista because their new operating system Window's seven launched this week. Seven has obvious improvements over Vista which didn't do well when it came out, three years ago. It's basically everything Vista should have been. Windows seven looks like Vista but Microsoft reworked the Windows Shell and task bar, giving it a dock that looks similar to Apple's. The operating system has touch and handwriting recognition and support for virtual hard disks. Other changes include improved performance on multi-core processors and some recognized features that they left out. Windows photo gallery, movie maker, and mail will all not come with Windows seven. Continuing on with Microsoft news, the company signed two deals with Facebook and Twitter. The social networks have agreed to index their status update tools into Bing searches. This means that when you search something on Bing you will see what Facebook and twitter users are saying about it. This is a step toward getting real time search results on things that are happening right now. The deals with Twitter and Facebook are non exclusive so I doubt that Google will be too far behind Bing here. It is kind of surprising that Microsoft beat Google to the punch on this one. YouTube took a page right out of Twitter's playbook by introducing their own version of trending topics. YouTube calls it the Comments Search. It's still in the "Test-Tube" which means their developers are still testing the feature. But it shows users exactly what the hot topics are on YouTube at any given time. The example YouTube used was the Balloon Boy. Oh Good times. A new app makes it easier to play Rock Band on the go. EA-creaters of Rock Band released a ten dollar version of the game for the iPhone and iPod touch. So now you can rock out just about anywhere. The game comes with a track list of 20 songs. Its still not going to give the same experience as playing it at home, but it still looks fun. Verizon has created several commercials to advertise "The Droid" which is the first Verizon phone to run on the Android operating system. So we've seen the phone but figuring out when you can buy it is another question. Verizon has a coded countdown clock for the Droid which counts down to October 28th. But their PR agency has sent out mysterious post cards that read 11 09, and that's it. They're sending mixed signals and nobody really knows why. I have a feeling they are just trying to torture us with anticipation for the first Verizon phone to run on the android operating system. And it appears to be working. Apple just couldn't let Microsoft dominate the news this week. The company announced updates to its computer lines.. The Mac book got a complete overhaul; the new laptop features a unibody, polycarbonate chassis to make it lighter and more durable. It now also features an LED-backlit display, glass Multi-Touch trackpad and a longer lasting battery. The iMacs are now bigger and stronger than ever. The enormous 27 inch iMac could probably replace a small television for movies and TV shows. It does lack a blu ray player and HDMI ports, but nobody's perfect.
