Black Friday, Verizon Phones, and Twitter...
Your Tech News Resource
If you have a contract with Verizon, plan on staying with them for a while. Verizon plans to double its early-termination fees to three hundred and fifty dollars on November fifteenth. The company says that the fee with apply to contracts with ëadvanced devices'. But there is no explanation on what exactly a ëadvanced device' is. It probably applies to smart phones that are heavily subsidized by Verizon. Some say that this new plan is aimed at people who scam the system. For example some customers who buy a new blackberry with a Verizon plan then turn around and cancel that plan and pay the one hundred and seventy five dollar early termination. Then they sell the phone for more than three hundred dollars. I can see why Verizon would want to stop this but they're just making it harder on everyone else. With the holiday season right around the corner, Walmart wants to be at the head of the competition. They've released an add advertising an Xbox 360 Arcade console for just two hundred dollars. While that might not be a door buster in and of itself, here's another deal. You also get a one hundred dollar gift card when you purchase the console. If you were to put that hundred dollars toward the purchase of an Xbox hard drive, you would have the equivalent of the Xbox 260 pro edition for just two hundred and thirty five dollars. The holiday ad also included deals on the HP G-60 laptop for just 300 dollars. As well as a 46 inch Panasonic Plasma HDTV for seven hundred and eighty-eight dollars. We reported last week on the launch of the Droid phone for Verizon. After that launch Verizon wasted no time in announcing the next phone in the Droid line: The Droid Eris. The Eris is like a scaled down version of the Droid. But in reality it is a rebranded HTC Hero. But like the Droid, the Eris will run Google's Android operating system. This is part of Verizon's wider plan to make the Android operating system available to all its customers. Yet another eBook reader hit the market this week, but this one comes with some drama. Spring Design announced the upcoming ëAlex eBook reader' and it looks somewhat familiar. That's because the bottom touch screen color interface looks remarkably similar to the color touch screen on Barnes and Noble's ëNook' eBook reader that went on sale two weeks ago. Spring Design is now suing Barnes and Noble for stealing trade secrets. They say the ëNook' looks and operates so much like the Alex because Spring Design had shown the Alex to Barnes & Noble before the Nook was ever developed. They also claim the two companies had been communicating about eBook reader designs for months under a non-disclosure agreement. More in the run up to the holiday shopping season, Google introduced new commerce search function for retailers. Google says that ëCommerce Search' will help internet users find the right products faster. Additionally customers can sort their searchers by category, price, brand, or any other attribute. Google also says that Retailers can promote specific items in search results. This might just make your online Christmas shopping a little easier. Twitter is making a little noise with an addition of a new feature. You can now sort people into lists and people can follow your lists. The practicality of these lists is still being debated since it is technically still in beta. You can create up to 20 lists of up to 500 tweeters. You can put anyone you want on yours lists; you don't have follow someone to put them on a list. You can choose to follow other people's lists, so in effect you can now follow people without actually following them. You following me on this?
