The Withings Smart Baby Monitor was announced about a year before it finally hit the market, but it was well worth the wait. This is the best and most innovative baby video monitor out there.

As with many other devices we reviewed, setup is quick and easy. Withings is one of the easiest in fact. Installing the app on your iPhone or other device should only take a few minutes, and you can begin monitoring immediately.

It is also not without its flaws. Wi-Fi video baby monitors are fairly new technology, so you can almost expect there will be some bugs to work out in the early goings. Devices like Withings Smart Monitor, however, show they are on the right track.

This Withing baby monitor supports multiple accounts, so you can monitor your baby from a mobile device on your way to work and then transfer over to your office computer when you get there. Grandparents who live in a distant part of town, or even in a different state, can simultaneously connect with their grandbaby from the same camera (or set of cameras) that you are using.

The night vision is dimmer than we would like, but overall it's not bad and gives you an adequate perspective on what your baby is up to after the sun goes down.

Video features, such as pan, tilt and zoom capabilities, have become quite common with traditional monitors, but they are a little slower making their way into the Wi-Fi monitor world. Withings is one of the exceptions. Withings has pan, tilt and zoom so you can zoom in on your baby from anywhere in the room. This feature becomes increasingly important the bigger and more mobile your baby becomes.

This handy and compact monitor doubles as a video recorder and digital camera, and you can post footage on Facebook. Its feature-rich package really has few weaknesses and has just about everything you could want.

One of the great features of the Withings monitor is that you can customize settings for noise and movement. In other words, you can program it to immediately alert you to the smallest noise and movement or you can set it so that you get notified after a few minutes of more significant movement. This can be invasive at its highest setting, but it's nice to have the option if you happen to have a baby who needs closer monitoring. It's also nice to have the option of toning down the notifications if you don't.

The volume control for the two-way talk and lullaby feature will prevent you from startling, rather than soothing, your baby.

If you're someone who likes to toggle between several apps at once, your signal may be interrupted or you may have to restart your baby monitor app altogether. Toggling between something like an eBook and the baby monitor app shouldn't ever be a problem, but competing apps will not always be as forgiving. Uninterrupted monitoring may require you to curb your app habits, in other words.

The device can notify you if the temperature or humidity levels need adjusting. A humidity sensor is a rare feature that will be especially handy in certain climates and during months when getting the temperature right in the great indoors could make the room a little too dry. The humidity sensor will help you gage that.

This device also has a unique night light that lets you adjust color and brightness settings to your baby's liking.

One of our biggest hang-ups with this monitor is the fact that the app, while free for local monitoring, only allows for 15 minutes of free remote monitoring. If you are across town, or on a business trip, you will be charged a flat rate for every additional 100 minutes after the initial free 15 minutes.

The Withing Smart Baby Monitor not only allows you to monitor your baby from your personal devices like iPhones, iPads and laptops, but it has all the other features you could hope for, such as pan, tilt and zoom capabilities, as well as the ability to record video and take snapshots. You can customize settings to alert in the way you want and the way which works best for you, depending on your baby's specific needs.
