Cassette2USB Converter by Clear Click earned the Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award in our review of the best cassette to MP3 converters. And it did so by providing a simple and effective method to digitize your old cassette tapes. However, the middling quality of the converted audio kept it from claiming the top spot.
All of the products we reviewed come with some kind of cassette deck that connects to a computer via a USB cord. The deck included with this converter is nearly identical to two other products on our lineup. In fact, the only difference is that is branded with the ClearClick logo and the Cassette2USB trademark. This device draws its power from either a USB connection to a computer or via a DC adapter. However, if you choose to use a DC adapter, you’ll have to buy one separately, as one is not included in the package.
What makes this cassette converter different from the others we reviewed is the fact that it comes with two software options for converting your tapes. The first is Audacity, which is an audio capture/editing application that comes with most of the other products on our lineup. Audacity is a good program that offers a wide array of audio editing and enhancement tools that can be useful if you know how to use it. But if you don’t have a pre-existing audio editing skill set, Audacity may be a little too advanced.
The other conversion application is Cassette2CDWizard. ClearClick creates this program, and as its name suggests, it not only digitizes your cassette tapes, but also allows you to burn them to a CD. This is a great feature, because it allows you to play your converted cassettes in any optical drive. It is also great for backing up your cassettes in case your computer goes down and you lose all your music files.
The quality of the converted audio is okay. We compared the converted audio against both the original tape we captured it from and a digital version of the same content. It held up well against the original recording, but we noticed some hissing in the background. However, when compared to the digital version of the song, it simply didn’t hold up. In the end, the audio quality is perfectly acceptable considering that it came from a tape. But if you want a high-quality version of a song, you’d be better served downloading it from iTunes or a similar service.
Of all the products we reviewed, ClearClick Cassette2USB Converter has the most features we look for in this category. Cassette2CDWizard walks you through the process of converting your tapes step-by-step. This is great for those users who don’t want to learn Audacity. It also allows you to input metadata like song titles, artists, albums and more.
Another feature that makes this product simpler to use than most is the fact that the cassette deck has an auto-reverse feature. This means that when a tape comes to the end of one side, the deck automatically starts playing the other side. This means that you don’t have to flip the tape automatically. This may seem like a minor feature, but it means you don’t have to babysit a conversion. You can just walk away and come back in an hour or so when the recording has been completed.
If you want to edit the audio on your tapes after they’ve been converted, you’ll find a wide array of editing and enhancement tools in Audacity. These tools include the ability to reduce noise, warble or other imperfections. You can also add effects and other enhancements. Just keep in mind that this isn’t the most user-friendly program. But if you want to learn, there are plenty of resources online to help you use this program to its fullest potential.
ClearClick offers a one-year warranty on this cassette to MP3 converter. You can also contact the company via email. They usually respond within a day or two. But if you need an answer sooner than that, you can consult the FAQ section of the ClearClick website. You can find solutions to most common problems there.
The main reason ClearClick2USB Converter ranked so highly in our review is because it offers users multiple options for converting their tapes. Audacity is great for more advanced users and Cassette2CD Wizard is a good choice for users who want a simpler conversion process.
