In the world of CD burning, you won’t get a more comprehensive solution than Nero Burning ROM. This software has nearly every feature we look for in this category, plus dozens more features that allow you to create not only CDs, but also DVDs and Blu-ray discs. It earned the Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award.
One of the most striking things about Nero Burning ROM is how versatile it is. You can use this CD burning software to create both audio and data discs. Not only can you create original discs, but you can duplicate CDs you already own. This application also has the ability to rip audio tracks from a disc and then convert those files into the most popular audio formats.
This program isn’t geared toward the casual user. If you’re new to the program, you should take the time to get to know it before you use it. Burning a new music CD or making a simple data disc won’t take very long to master. But its advanced tools like CDA options, autorun and multisession are all intended for power users who know what they all do and how they work. If you’re not looking for these types of features, you may want to look into simpler, consider our top pick, Roxio Creator.
When you're burning a data disc, whether it's a CD, DVD or Blu-ray, you have access to Nero's SecurDisc technology. This allows you to password-protect your disc, and you can also add a digital signature to your disc so that future users can verify its origin. This is all great for backing up your most important files and keeping them secure.
The ripping and audio-conversion features with Nero Burning ROM are also highlights. Ripping an entire audio CD took us less than a minute. Once those files are on your computer, Nero Burning ROM lets you convert them to the most popular audio file formats, including MP3, MP3 PRO, AAC, FLAC and APE.
In our tests, Nero Burning ROM was slightly slower than the other CD burning software we reviewed. It took a little more than six minutes to burn a new music album and four and a half minutes to make a full data CD. While these times aren’t bad, other products on our side-by-side comparison chart accomplished the same task in about half that time.
One of the factors that make Nero Burning ROM some of the best CD burning software is its complete array of customization tools. Many of the CD burning programs in our reviews are limited to making rote copies of discs that already exist. This is not so with this program. You can use Nero to build an audio or data disc from the ground up. This is a great feature for burning your own creations onto a disc to share with family and friends.
Nero has an acceptable number of technical and customer support options. Its website contains a knowledgebase that not only covers Nero Burning ROM but every product the company makes. If you have a technical issue, this should be the first place you go. If you have a more advanced problem or a customer support issue, you can email the company; it usually responds in 24 to 48 hours.
There is a lot to like about Nero Burning ROM. It's fast and secure, and it offers you a great deal of granular control. It has good conversion tools and security options, plus a full array of customization features and encryption tools. Though it has a bit of a learning curve, it's great for creating new discs, backing up CDs and files you already own, and protecting them from unwanted eyes.
