Pros / This printer has trays for both major paper sizes.

Cons / It is bulky and looks outdated.

Verdict / For the price, this is a good multifunction printer that would work well in a small business.

The best part about this printer is the price. While it doesn’t have quite the print accuracy of the HP Officejet Pro, our best overall all-in-one printer, it does have many of the same features at a lower price, making it a good value printer.

Output Quality

The printer’s resolution is 4800 x 1200 dots per inch. This high a resolution ought to indicate a high-quality printed product, but in our research, we found we found more printing errors and slightly less clarity than others we tested.

This printer only has four ink cartridges, which means it’s not capable of printing the darkest blacks or reproducing precise gradation, unlike some of the other models we looked at. It also means that while the machine can do borderless prints – a great feature for making brochures or posters – if you plan to print in color often, we’d recommend some of the more expensive models designed specifically for color printing rather than this wallet-friendly model. If you’re looking to print mostly black-and-white documents, the Brother Business Smart Plus is a great choice.

The printer comes with a scanner and copier as well as Optical Character Recognition, which lets you edit PDFs after you scan them into the computer. The scanner and copier work at a lower resolution than images printed digitally, but that’s typical of all-in-one printers.

Speed

Based on our research, this printer produces pages faster than 15 sheets a minute in black and white. There is no setting to substitute inks if you’re in a hurry, so you can’t just set it to use another color if you run out; you need to replace the ink to get it up and running again.

This printer has a lot of connectivity options that make printing faster and easier. You can connect via USB directly to most devices. The printer isn’t set up to print directly from a camera, which might be a deal-breaker for some people. You can also use other wired or wireless printing options, like cloud or application printing. The printer even has direct Wi-Fi printing, which means you don’t need a router to hook up your wireless device.

Operating Costs

In addition to its relatively meager upfront cost, this printer is inexpensive to run throughout its lifespan. Its Energy Star rating means it’s energy-efficient, keeping electricity costs down. After you use the ink cartridges that come with the device, you can replace them with higher-capacity cartridges, which will shave some money off the price per page.

Paper Handling

The paper tray can hold up to 250 sheets, a good size, and can print on slightly higher-quality, thicker paper than many all-in-one printers. There’s a secondary tray that can hold standard-size paper and also a tray for the occasional letter or cardstock printing. Like most printers of this size, it can print on both sides of the paper using a feature called duplexing.

Versatility

This printer is compatible with both A3 and A4 size paper. A4 is the 8.5 x 11.0-inch standard letter-size paper, and A3 is the less commonly used ledger size that can be useful for presentations and record-keeping as well as in printing some legal documents. This flexibility is useful and unusual for such a low-cost business printer.

Help and Support

You can find support through email, phone and live chat at Brother’s website. The printer comes with a two-year warranty – unusually good coverage for a printer. Typically, companies only provide a single year for printing devices.

Summary

Unlike the Canon Pixma, this printer comes with some connectivity options that are missing on other models, such as the ability to fax or directly connect devices through USB. It also has a lot of flexibility in the various kinds of paper it can use. Though the print clarity of this printer isn’t the best we saw, it might be worth the slight dip in clarity and the occasional error for the low price tag and high functionality of this printer.
