Pros / It adds photo printing and camera support to the usual portable printing options.

Cons / Real portability requires the additional purchase of a battery pack.

Verdict / The Canon Pixma iP110 is an excellent mobile printer with extra features for photographers such as PictBridge support and photo printing.

Canon’s best mobile printer, the Pixma iP110, isn’t just made for documents. In fact, Canon bills it as a mobile photo printer. With a compact, portable design and optional battery, it’s also built for use on the go. It combines this portability and print quality with an excellent feature set for a mobile printer.

Design

The Pixma iP110 is one of the most portable models we reviewed. Measuring 12.7 x 7.3 x 2.5 inches, it’s actually smaller than some mobile printers, and while it’s not small enough to slip in a laptop bag, it should be easy to bring along in a backpack or carryon bag. It weighs just 4.3 pounds on its own, and even with the optional battery pack attached, it’s still less than 5 pounds, which is 1.5 lbs less than our top pick, the HP OfficeJet All-in-One 250. The battery pack adds to the overall cost of the printer, but it can print 290 pages per charge.

Output

Despite its small size, this portable color printer can print both letter- and legal-size documents. It’s print quality isn’t perfect; during our testing, documents had some unwanted ink spotting and noticeable ink voids in large areas of color, and there was some unwanted banding in one image. Still, on the whole it produces serviceable documents on the go. It’s also reasonably fast, printing in black and white at a speed of seven pages per minute and in color at four pages per minute.

It prints documents well, but Canon is right to call the Pixma iP110 a portable photo printer because its strengths certainly lie in printing glossy, high-resolution images. Whether it’s a 4 x 6 snapshot or a full 8 x 10 picture, the Pixma iP110 does best when printing photos. However, you need photo paper and enough ink to cover the demands of printing a photo or two.

Ink & Media

The printer’s input tray holds up to 50 pages of standard paper – you can’t fit as many pages of thicker photo paper. This is on par with the highest-capacity printers in our review.

The Canon iP110 has a two-cartridge, five-color ink system, with one multicolor cartridge for standard cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks and a second cartridge for pigment black ink, which is better suited to photo printing. The two cartridges are available in just one size. With the page yields per cartridge, it works out to a cost of just 15 cents per page, which makes it one of the most economical printers in our review. Interestingly enough, in addition to the expected removable ink cartridges, the Pixma iP110 comes with a modular printhead that is installed by the user during the initial setup.

Features

The printer doesn’t have the built-in scanning and copying hardware found on some portable printer scanner combos, but it has a decent feature set for a mobile printer. You can connect to your computer and other devices using a USB cord or Wi-Fi, and the printer supports both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Its mobile support is quite robust. You can print using Apple AirPlay and Google Cloud Print, as well as with the proprietary Canon PRINT app. Between the three options, all of your smartphones and tablets should be covered. It also supports the less common PictBridge, which lets you print photos directly from a camera.

Help & Support

Canon ships the Pixma iP110 with a standard one-year warranty, which is common for mini portable printers. It also benefits from Canon’s excellent customer support, which includes plenty of online materials such as a searchable manual, a troubleshooting guide, answers to frequently asked questions and dedicated support forums. You can also reach support representatives by phone or email.

Summary

The Canon Pixma iP110 is a competent mobile printer that stands on its own for its portability and document printing alone. Thanks to Canon’s expertise in photos, it also boasts the best features for printing high-quality photos on the go, including support for PictBridge so you can print directly from your camera.
