Wisdom Panel 4.0 is the top pet DNA test kit that we researched because it tests your dog’s DNA against the most breeds for an affordable price. If you’re looking to see what breeds make up the genetic profile of your dog, this is the best choice for most people.
For under $100, Wisdom Panel 4.0 lets you see the breed makeup of your dog back three generations. This pet DNA test kit compares the DNA of your dog with over 250 different dog breeds to come up with the breed percentages that make up your dog.
To get the DNA samples, Wisdom Panel sends you a kit with DNA swabs that you use to collect saliva from your pet. Your dog’s results will appear in your online account within three weeks of returning the samples to Wisdom Panel. This is the second fastest turnaround time of the pet DNA kits we researched. The fastest advertised turnaround time is by DNA My Dog.
Like the other pet DNA kits we researched, Wisdom Panel isn’t used to test the purebred status of your animal. If you’re a breeder or interested in documenting the parentage of your dog, the American Kennel Club has an official DNA test which also comes with an official certificate you can use to verify your dog’s purebred parentage.
Instead, Wisdom Panel’s main focus is determining the breeds that your dog is descended from. Like more expensive tests we researched, Wisdom Panel compares your dog’s DNA for wolf and coyote ancestry as well as testing for several diseases. The EmbarkVet DNA test we researched, though, is better for checking for diseases because it looks at over 160 diseases. Wisdom Panel only focuses on two genetically inherited diseases: the MDR1 gene, which affects drug sensitivity, and exercise induced collapse, which can be present in Labrador Retrievers. This DNA test doesn’t estimate your pet’s age, but it does show common physical traits that are associated with your pet’s genetic makeup.
There are other Wisdom Panel tests, like the Wisdom Panel 2.0 and 3.0, that don’t test as many genetic markers so they aren’t as accurate. Because of the low price of the Wisdom Panel 4.0 test, we recommend you purchase that rather than one of the older tests.
With its low price and super-wide swath of tested breeds, Wisdom Panel 4.0 is the best pet DNA test that we researched. If you’re interested in knowing the breeds that make up your dog, this test could be perfect for you.
