Brother doesn’t necessarily have the name recognition of other popular manufacturers among general consumers. However, administrators and others who purchase and use enterprise-level hardware know that the company’s products tend to perform well and are versatile, which makes them quite popular in this consumer set. Offices don’t need equipment that has the fanciest or most recognizable brand names – they simply need hardware that works well. In this respect, the Brother ImageCenter ADS-2800W is an excellent dedicated document scanner. With its strong performance and versatile design, the Brother merits its ranking among the best document scanners.

The ImageCenter ADS-2800W’s specifications fall in line with comparable high-end desktop scanners. It has a respectable scan rate of 30 pages per minute at a resolution of 300 dots per inch (dpi). Also, the scanner’s automatic document feeder has a listed capacity of 50 pages and can accommodate documents of different sizes and thicknesses, including those that are up to 96 inches long. It has standard support for duplex scanning and optical text recognition, so it can scan both sides of a paper at the same time and has software that makes scanned text editable and extractable. In addition, it can scan at resolutions of up to 600 to 1,200 dpi.

For context, the best document scanners have similar specifications. This Brother model definitely has a performance ceiling high enough to work well in midsize and large offices that require a dedicated and fast document scanner.

With dimensions of 10.2 x 12.1 x 9.8 inches and a weight of 10 pounds, this ImageCenter document scanner is on the larger end of the spectrum. Most weigh around 5 to 6 pounds and take up slightly less real estate on a desk. This is a slight downside if you’re working in an office with limited space. Still, it sports a plain matte black finish and can comfortably fit into a standard office space. The document scanner’s interface is anchored around a 3.7-inch color display that lets you quickly customize document scan settings.

While the ADS-2800W’s performance is on par with the best desktop scanners, it pulls ahead of the competition significantly in build quality and connectivity options. The scanner features a full suite of connections tailored to its audience of enterprise users.

Its standard support for storage services like Google Drive and Evernote allows you to directly export scans to the cloud. This means you can quickly scan documents and process them for employees or clients who are not in the office without having to manually upload them from a local computer. The machine’s email export support is similar, and you can use it to directly send scans to your preferred email client or address.

Through Brother’s free iPrint & Scan application, you can also export documents directly to Apple iOS, Google Android, Windows Phone and Amazon Kindle devices. Unlike the NeatConnect, the Brother ImageCenter doesn’t have a slot for SD cards, so you can use the included USB plug to save scans directly to USB storage devices. Notably, the Brother even includes support for wireless and networked connectivity.

All of these options make the machine exceptionally versatile for businesses. With so many connectivity channels, employees can upload and process documents easily. In addition, the ImageCenter’s dual networking options make it easy to connect to an office and multiple users. This Brother document scanner’s versatility is met by very few competing desktop scanners and makes it a centerpiece in a department’s scanning setup.

By default, Brother includes a one-year warranty on the ImageCenter. Through Brother’s website, you can access a variety of troubleshooting resources for the ADS-2800W. These include direct support over the phone, live chat and email, and there is also an online troubleshooting section that hosts a variety of resources. We found the site to be easy to navigate and quickly found answers about and assistance with many common troubleshooting issues. Resources on the site include an extensive frequently asked questions section, driver downloads and manuals.

When large companies purchase devices for their offices, they tend to consider practicality and value the most: What does my office need, and how expensive will the hardware be? Looking at the Brother ImageCenter ADS-2800W from these angles, it is clear to see that it is a worthy choice. With a value-friendly price tag, excellent scanning performance and a full slate of connectivity options, it possesses the versatility and scanning ability needed to meet the needs of medium to large offices without missing a step.
