The Sunbeam 2 in 1 electric donut maker earns its name by virtue of the fact it also doubles as a mini-brownie maker. The donut maker, it is loaded with safety features – a chief consideration, especially if you plan on making donut night an event for the whole family. Most importantly, it produces evenly baked goodies in a short amount of time with minimal cleanup.

We put the Sunbeam 2 in 1 home donut machine through the paces and found it performs very well in the important area of consistency. Whereas some donut makers produce batches that are inconsistently cooked, with crispier edges and dry interiors, the Sunbeam 2 in 1 delivered evenly browned donuts consistently. The non-stick cooking surface performed equally well, and we were able to bake several batches without the need for vegetable oil. We were able to remove donuts quickly and easily –no crumbs or caked-on mess remained in the mold.

It has a batch capacity of six donuts, which is the rough average output of most available donut makers, and can get you off to a good start if you have an army of hungry children waiting to be fed. Once it’s plugged in, it takes four minutes to preheat the unit. Cooking time averages five minutes and 30 seconds. A red and green light on the top lid of the unit tells you when it’s ready to cook and when batches are ready to be removed.

The Sunbeam 2 in 1 also comes with something that no other donut makers we tested comes with: a dishwasher-safe removable cooking surface that makes cleanup a snap. Adding even more versatility to this unit is an interchangeable mold that lets you bake mini-brownies.

Since safety is so important when it comes to kitchen appliances, we gave the Sunbeam 2 in 1 high marks for including all of the safety features we looked for. In addition to convenient cord storage, it has cool-touch handles that allow you to reposition the donut maker without burning yourself.

The inclusion of non-skid rubber feet on the bottom of the donut maker serves to keep it securely positioned on your kitchen counter, which is important if you have a kitchen full of overly eager or rowdy children. Additionally, a locking lid latch ensures the lid stays closed even if the donut maker is knocked over – eliminating additional burn risks and ensuring cleanup goes smoothly, even if nothing else does.

Bonus cooking accessories are a definite benefit, especially for newbie bakers who don’t have a lot of experience in the kitchen. We looked for the inclusion of additional accessories to better help inexperienced cooks get a quick start.

The Sunbeam 2 in 1 does not include any such items, which is not unusual. However, it does mean that beginners may have to purchase additional accessories like removal forks, batter bottles, icing kits and a cooling rack. That's not to say you’re entirely on your own, however – cracking open the user guide, you'll see five different recipes to help get you started.

The Sunbeam 2 in 1 is covered by a one-year manufacturer’s warranty. This is standard for donut makers and is of great benefit if you should encounter any electrical malfunctions within the first year of purchase.

Unfortunately, this is the only support offered by the manufacturer. No easy way to reach customer service exists, either via email or telephone. A phone number is provided in the user guide to find locations for returns covered by the warranty, but aside from that, there is no general customer support number or email for other inquiries.

All in all, the Sunbeam 2 in 1 yields high-ranking results in the areas that are most important when considering what make and model of home donut maker to buy. Donut consistency was among the best we tested, as was the performance of the non-stick cooking surface and the length of time spent in post-cooking cleanup. Interchangeable molds that are also dishwasher safe make it a donut maker with practicality and versatility, and the inclusion of all necessary safety features make it a device that’s safe for use in your kitchen.
