Easy DVD Player, produced by ZJ Computing Inc., is one of the only players on the market that will allow you to create smaller video display windows using the digital zoom option; this feature allows you to view two movies at the same time (focusing on the one in the zoom mode). However, the program has some flaws that prevent us from recommending it.
Some of the convenient features offered by Easy DVD Player include the time-saving option to bypass the DVD menu altogether-the software will play your movie at default settings right after you pop it in. Also, you can preset parental controls and change the appearance of the control panel by selecting an alternate skin (however, there is only one other skin option available in the trial version we tested). The software can handle a variety of media file extensions, including VOB, MPEG, and AVI.
The sleek appearance of the control panel does nothing to alleviate problems with the actual player. The program, by default, does not select the regular movie soundtrack but plays the "director's" track-this is the "voice-over" version of the movie in which the movie director fills you in on behind-the-scenes details. This is annoying to listen to when you just want to watch the movie. We had to go in and manually change the sound track from the director's commentary to the normal sound track with each movie we tried to play.
Also, each time we tried to capture an image we were interrupted by a pop-up window; the movie stopped until the .bmp was saved. Aside from these quirks-and these may be faults with the trial version only-we had no problems.
Easy DVD Player has high-quality video resolution and gives you the option of altering brightness, contrast and frame-scan frequency. In other words, you can fine-tune the video display to meet your preferences. (For more detail on video options, read our article: What is Video Interlacing?)
Easy DVD Player is an average DVD player software program. It provides a few handy features-including parental controls and digital zoom-but the program lacks the ability to capture high-quality images and has a few quirks that make it less friendly to use than higher-ranked players.
