This large, spacious countertop microwave is much more than your bulky new best friend. Its technology promises that your dinner will be defrosted evenly and your soup leftovers won’t have hot spots, making you wish you had used the stovetop.

LG’s NeoChef Countertop Microwave with Smart Inverter is a roomy 0.9 cu ft. product that could fit an entire roast, casserole dish, and much more than a large dinner plate.

While many positives about this product make it the best compact microwave, it’s also relatively large and may take up more countertop space than some people have, mainly due to its depth front to back. I have a countertop where a coffee pot, toaster, and air fryer live, and this microwave would never fit in that space because it’s simply too deep.

In addition, the opening mechanism, which is a two-part system, presents some accessibility issues. It will likely prevent small children's hands from reaching in and grabbing something too hot. However, it can also present some convenience and access issues for adults, though the child lock function can be disabled if needed.

The microwave arrived in a well-packaged box. Admittedly, due to its cumbersome size and 25-lb overall weight, I couldn’t lift the microwave myself, but I appreciated that it was protected in styrofoam.

I was also impressed at how easy the microwave was to remove from the packaging once my husband and I got it to our kitchen. Some appliances arrive covered in tape, and you spend much time trying to scrape them off, but that wasn’t the case with this LG microwave.

The only set-up required before use was installing the turntable, which was pretty simple overall. This microwave comes with a 12” glass plate, and I liked how easy it was to place it on the turntable without those annoying divots and notches that can sometimes make reinserting the plate difficult.

The microwave is extremely sleek-looking with its stainless steel exterior. It does seem as if the top of the microwave might be easily scratched, as I noticed a few marks on the top of mine due to my family seeing it as another surface to place cups and plates.

I liked how large this microwave's interior was and the various-sized dishes I could put in it for cooking or reheating.

The hexagonal design of the turntable and its wheels are great for ease of cleaning the plate, and it also seems more stabilized and accommodating of taller items than the typical 3-wheel turntable.

While this microwave's buttons are super easy to see and read, some functions aren’t intuitive and can be confusing. Certain buttons seem to have dual jobs depending on how long you hold them. While it makes sense to accommodate display space, it feels almost like a “shift” button to access additional functions, and that can be frustrating if you want to heat something in a busy kitchen or on a tight schedule.

Regarding child safety, LG took it seriously with the child lock on this microwave. Given that it has to sit on a countertop, which is easier for young children to access, the company utilizes a 2-step process for opening the microwave door. There is a button on the side of the microwave that you must press first before pressing the open button on the front.

While I didn’t struggle opening it and appreciated knowing my kids might not think of a two-step process, I worry that someone like my mom, who has arthritic hands, might struggle a bit, given the location of the buttons and the pressure required. This feature can be disabled if desired, so those who don’t worry about kids accessing the appliance could forgo it if preferred.

One of the features I appreciated about the microwave had less to do with the microwave’s functionality and more to do with ease of getting product support if needed. The microwave has a QR code that is easy to access and gives you direct information on product model numbers, LG support, and additional product resources.

In a world where you can be bombarded with manuals and registration paperwork, it was nice to quickly access key information.

The microwave uses sensor heating, which means it uses humidity-sensing technology to help determine when food is ready. These pre-programmed settings mean you don’t have to try and figure out the best power level or time for your cold piece of pizza or leftovers from three nights ago.

Although it has the Smart Diagnosis and Sensor Cook functions, it makes a slight buzzing sound and seems louder than other microwaves.

This product has two areas that appear for venting purposes, one on the back. So, even though it’s already bulky, it might be best to give it some room on all sides of the countertop to ensure proper ventilation.

Upon starting the microwave, a slight buzzing sound seems a bit more distinct than other products, though it’s not loud enough to be a big issue.

During my testing, I tried out what we will likely use our microwaves for—reheating meals. I warmed up a bowl of chili and part of a sandwich, using multiple functions, such as guessing at a specific time and checking the food.

I also practiced other buttons, such as auto reheat, which allows you to use specific functions for various foods to better tailor the cooking settings to your meal. My lunch heated quickly, in minutes, without overheating or hot or cold spots.

After years of testing kitchen appliances, I’ve determined that microwaves' popcorn functions are accurate (or lack thereof). Most popcorn bags are standard size and contain similar amounts of popcorn, but some microwaves can do the job in under two minutes, while others take four.

The accuracy of the popcorn button tends to speak to the accuracy of the machine as a whole. Luckily, this machine performed well, cooking the popcorn in just over two minutes without leaving excessive unpopped kernels behind.

LG’s microwave uses an EasyClean interior, which means that for most messes, you simply need to wipe it with a damp cloth. This limits chemicals and scrubbing. However, the company advises heavier messes or build-up on the microwave interior may require more scrubbing.

I had no issues with typical care and maintenance or spills that seemed too daunting to clean with a simple damp cloth. Even residue stuck to the microwave plate is easily removable if you take it out and soak it in warm, soapy water, although the plate might even be too big for some sinks.

Unboxing: We observed the packaging, which was mostly recyclable and minimal in quantity. The included instructions were detailed and precise enough to follow without confusion, though they weren’t needed for much.

The delivery professionals who set up the microwave and removed my old one above the range did the unboxing process. They took around 30 minutes to complete the project, with two delivery people involved. They brought in the large box, which took both of them to carry, and unboxed it, removing packaging and styrofoam-type protection, and there were no marks or scratches on the product upon arrival.

The assembly involved two people mounting the microwave and securing it above the range. I immediately noticed that this wider, lower profile, and shorter (top to bottom) microwave left a large gap where my previous microwave was. So, if you select this one, you should account for what part of the wall won’t be covered by it. Now, I have a few inches of exposed wall that isn’t tiled like the rest of the backsplash area.

Its technical abilities required some learning but appeared spacious and would be a powerful reheating tool in my kitchen. That proved to be true.

This takes a bit of getting used to and means the door swings out much more expensive than usual. But it’s also the reason for such a big interior to the appliance, which means some seriously efficient heating and lots of room for larger meals. 

It is black with a mirror-like finish, so you might find yourself touching up your hair while waiting for breakfast to heat up. It’s designed to be smudge-proof, but I found it to be everything but that. It clearly showed where someone had touched the buttons or pushed them closed.

It’s easier for kids to use (with adult supervision) because you don’t need to do anything fancy or particular to open or close, like squeezing a lever or button. However, it has a bit more of a learning curve when determining which buttons to push, as the microwave’s code shows which numbers are for which types of foods. 

Overall, the design is intuitive, engaging, and accessible for most people. It also gives greater specificity to the cooking process, with numerous options for reheating.

This microwave cooks faster, evenly, and more efficiently than any microwave I’ve tested. It doesn’t heat food as superficially as some, where the top of your chili is piping hot, but it’s cold in the middle. Instead, the entire meal is evenly heated to the perfect temperature in less time than expected.  

I tested this by warming a meal with multiple food groups, which included leftover pizza and chicken. I chose the “chicken” option for the smart sensor, highlighting one issue — if you are using this and must select the type of food, sometimes there isn’t a perfect description of what you are heating. But that didn’t seem to matter much, and in several minutes, the meal was properly heated but not overdone.

I have five kids, the youngest of which is a baby who likes to wake up at the sound of a blender, microwave, washer and dryer, or even the dishwasher turning on. So, it made sense to test the sound levels of this microwave in a real-life setting to determine if moms around the country could warm up their coffee so that they could finally get to drink it when the baby goes down for a nap without issue.

I was happy to report she did not wake up, and the microwave is very quiet. I sometimes had to check if it was on and functioning until I got used to the quieter sound.

I find reheating soup exceptionally annoying because it often has hot spots that burn your mouth and cooler spots that make you want to throw it back into the microwave. This is another situation where the smart sensing technology performed well, heating the soup to the perfect temperature. I did have one complaint with the sensing technology: you don’t know how long it will take to finish heating. When I put in the soup, it didn’t display a countdown such as “five minutes” but instead showed what type of food I was heating up. This was a bit of an inconvenience when it came to timing it up with other food groups in the meal so that all of them would be ready on time.

The microwave was easy to wipe down, and the glass plate was sturdy but easy to remove, wash, and reinsert. However, consumers should note that the front will take as much effort to clean as a mirror and will likely need more maintenance than other microwaves.

For a while now, I’ve had my eye on a new type of microwave that can do more than heat food. These days, some of the best microwaves have additional capabilities like air frying, grilling, baking, and more. Rather than having four different appliances, you could use one microwave to cook your food in various ways. This is the case with the Samsung 1.2 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave with Power Convection—I am so glad I could test it out.

This large Samsung microwave has a whopping maximum power level of 1650 watts and can be used as a microwave, convection oven, grill, air fryer, or a combination of those functions. While the instruction manual is frustratingly limited, at least the microwave’s app connectivity is easy to use and sends notifications to your phone when your food is ready.

Over two weeks, I tested the various functions of this Samsung microwave so I could provide an in-depth review of how it works and who will benefit from it the most. Keep reading for more information.

Samsung MC12DB8700CKAA: Price & availability

This Samsung microwave is sold for $599 at full price through the Samsung website and Amazon. However, some stores, like M&M Appliance and Orville’s Home Appliances, sell it at a discounted price of about $540. It’s currently not available through Best Buy or Home Depot.

The high price tag is probably due to the fact that the microwave has some smart capabilities and can also be used as a convection oven, grill, and air fryer. It should be noted that you could find a microwave with similar capabilities for about $250. Remember, this is a Samsung product, so it doesn’t surprise me that it costs a little more due partly to the quality, construction, and brand name.

Samsung MC12DB8700CKAA: Setup

The Samsung 1.2 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave with Power Convection is pretty heavy, so be careful when carrying it from your doorstep to your kitchen. After removing it from the packaging, I added the turntable and the glass plate. (The microwave itself is essentially put together.)

Although the buttons, dial, and screen are different than what I’m used to when it comes to microwaves, I was surprised by how easy it was to figure out. The dial allows you to scroll through the on-screen options and choose a setting (by pressing the dial). If I need to go to a previous screen, I just hit the return button, which looks like an arrow. I quickly set the time without issues, turned off the child lock, and downloaded the SmartThings app.

Connecting the microwave to my Wi-Fi and the SmartThings app was no hassle. The SmartThings app aids users in a few different ways. For one, I can set a cook function and time in the app and send it to the microwave (rather than use the dial to set the cook function). Whether I set the cook function through the app or on the product itself, the app notifies me throughout the cooking process of different things, such as if I need to turn the meat over or when the cooking process is complete.

What I found odd is that the Samsung instruction manual says that the microwave has Voice Control capability through Bixby, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. Unfortunately, the instruction manual severely lacks instructions (which is ironic) on how to set up voice control. I tried to set it up through Google Assistant and the Amazon Alexa apps. The microwave did not appear when I searched for it in the apps. I even went on the Samsung website for instructions and found no information. This is a big drawback, in my opinion.

I should also add that the instruction manual doesn’t provide much information on the different cook functions. It doesn’t explain the difference between power convection and convection or what precisely the grill coil is compared to the convection coil. There is also no insight into how to best utilize the additional accessories for specific types of foods and cooking functions.

Samsung MC12DB8700CKAA: Design

I had just tested a 1.1 cu. ft. microwave, so I assumed that the Samsung wouldn’t be much larger, being that it’s 1.2 cu. ft., but I was wrong. When I pulled it out of the box, I immediately realized it would not fit on my microwave stand. I had to place it on my breakfast table for testing. While the inside of the microwave might be 1.2 cu. ft., the exterior dimensions are pretty large. Even though this is a countertop microwave, it looks like something should be mounted on the wall. Make sure to measure your space before you buy.

This sleek black microwave has a 39-inch power cord and looks more like an oven than a microwave in that the door pulls down like an oven. The front screen is a lot easier to see through than other microwaves I’ve tested, which is nice when you’re cooking.

There is a small digital screen at the top of the unit, and eight glass touch controls next to it. These glass touch controls feature four preset buttons -- Power Convection, Auto Cook, Microwave, and Air Fry -- and four other buttons -- a pause/start button, a child lock button, a return button, and a timer button. A dial allows you to move through the on-screen options and select your choice.

The interior is made of ceramic enamel and features a light and a removable 15-inch glass turntable. Samsung also provides a circular metal platter for convection cooking and two round grilling racks.

The Samsung 1.2 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave with Power Convection is designed to work with the SmartThings app. In terms of design, the app isn’t overwhelming but relatively easy to use. It allows you to choose a cooking mode, the power level, and cooking time and then sends that information to the microwave.

Samsung MC12DB8700CKAA: Performance

This Samsung microwave has many modes: power convection, convection, air fry, grill, microwave, grill combi, convection combi, keep warm, and defrost. I tested out each and every function by warming cups of water, defrosting meat, grilling chicken legs and fish, air frying meats and vegetables, and more.

Testing the Samsung 1.2 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave with Power Convection was a great experience, and there were a lot of things about it that I loved. In terms of wattage, it’s different from other microwaves. For instance, the max wattage for the microwave function is 900W, but it’s 1600W for grilling and 1650W for convection. Of course, with the microwave function, you can adjust the power level. No matter the function I used, this microwave had a dB rating of 65.

Let’s start with the most straightforward functions. Keep Warm is as it sounds: it keeps the food warm before serving it. When I pressed this function, I could choose how long I wanted the food to be kept warm at 150 degrees. The Defrost button offers preset defrost options for Meat, Poultry, Fish, or Breads/Cakes. It only gives you a weight defrost option (no time defrost option), so you’ll need to know how much something weighs to set the correct defrost time properly.

When you press the Microwave button, the Samsung product allows you to set the time by minutes and seconds with the dial. Again, this is a relatively easy function to use, and I thought it did a great job at heating various foods and mugs of water in the microwave setting.

This Samsung microwave does a great job with air frying. The food was as crispy as I'd hoped, especially when I placed the food on the grilling racks. When I pressed the Air Fry button, I could choose the temperature of the air fryer and the cooking time.

The Grill feature differs because you can only choose the cooking time, not the temperature. I loved how the Grill function made the skin of chicken legs crispy while retaining the moistness of the meat. The asparagus I cooked on the Grill feature was similarly tasty.

Does the grill function on this microwave produce the same effect as an actual grill? Of course not. In my opinion, a grill provides more caramelization, charred flavors, and grill lines. The Grill feature on this Samsung microwave produces similar results as the Air Fry function, and I know this because I cooked the same meal – chicken legs and asparagus – on the Air Fry function, too. I didn’t notice any difference in taste, dryness versus juiciness, or cook time between the Grill and Air Fry functions.

That said, I felt it took much longer to air fry and grill food with this microwave than when I used my own air fryer or grill. For instance, it took 30 minutes to air fry or grill the chicken legs to eat safely. I can cook chicken legs in my regular air fryer in about 20-22 minutes (depending on their size). Most grills I've tested cook chicken legs and vegetables between 15-20 minutes. If you can’t have a grill, this Samsung microwave is a good alternative. However, I’ve tested some indoor grills that mimic outdoor grills much better than this product.

I should also mention that there is a Grill Combi function. It uses the Grill function and the Microwave function at the same time. Unfortunately, I don’t know precisely the benefit of this except to say that it’s better to use for something like sausage that isn’t take as long to cook as, say, chicken or steak would.

The Convection feature functions as your baking option because it evenly distributes heat. You’ll set the temperature like you would an oven. I used it to cook a can of biscuits, and it worked phenomenally. I think this is my favorite function of the microwave. It cooked the biscuits two minutes quicker than it would have taken if I'd used an oven.

Power Convection is the same feature but adds more speed to the bake time. Convection Combi bakes and roasts foods quickly by combining the microwave and the convection oven. It adjusts the power level to 70 percent and asks that you set the temperature and the cooking time.

I preferred to use the Convection feature over the Power Convection and Convection Combi only because I felt like it wasn’t that different from using my oven. For me, there was more guesswork in terms of time and temperature with Power Convection and Convection Combi, and I’m not well practiced in using either of these functions. It’ll likely take some experimentation to get used to the Power Convection and Convection Combi features.

This microwave also has a range of other functions. For instance, I could turn the dial to add or reduce the cooking time while the microwave was cooking. You can also save your favorite custom cook times and functions, especially those you know you’ll want to use in the future.

Regarding cleaning, I loved that this unit had a deodorizing function, which essentially removes the odors. This function actually works pretty well, though if you keep the microwave clean, you won’t have to use it often. While the glass plate and turntable are dishwasher safe, I often cleaned the inside of the microwave with a wet rag and light amounts of dish soap.

If you want a microwave with multiple cooking features, such as air frying, broiling, and baking, but don’t want something as large as this Samsung, consider the Toshiba ML2-TC10SAIT. It’s considerably more compact, and while it has a lower wattage, at least it comes with multiple accessories and is about half the price of the Samsung.

The Panasonic HomeChef is a similarly priced alternative that can microwave, air fry, broil, and convection cook. Unlike the Samsung, it can’t grill, but at least the buttons will feel a bit more familiar to folks, and it won’t take up as much counter space.

While the Samsung 1.2 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave with Power Convection is supposed to have Voice Control features, but I couldn’t figure it out. That said, I was able to set up and use the Alexa Voice Control features with the Sharp SMC1169KS 1.1 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave. While the Sharp can’t air fry or grill, it’s a solid microwave with all the smart features you could want and doesn’t take up too much counter space.

Gilbert Tam, kitchen appliance expert from ProKitchen HK, told me: "Farberware is known for being affordable and budget-friendly. The prices typically range from $60 to $150, depending on size and features."

"Toshiba is usually priced slightly higher than Farberware. Prices generally range from $80 to $250. Toshiba microwaves with inverter technology and smart features tend to be at the pricier end of the spectrum," says Tam.

For a basic Farberware microwave like the FMO07ABTBKA 0.7 cu. ft. compact countertop, expect to pay around $80. Meanwhile, a more feature-rich one from the same brand or one with higher wattage (which basically means faster cooking times) will set you back around $400.

By contrast, Toshiba prices typically start slightly higher: a basic microwave retails around $100, and a more premium machine like the ML2-TC10SAIT compact microwave will set you back $299.99 at Walmart.

He added: "Some Toshiba microwaves come with voice control compatibility (Alexa-enabled) and eco-mode to save power when not in use."

Microwaves tend to have a power range of 600 to 1,200 watts and can be placed on a countertop, over the range, or in cabinetry. 

Tam told me, "Farberware typically ranges between 700 and 1,100 watts, sufficient for basic cooking and reheating tasks. Lower-powered models are more common.

"Toshiba offers models ranging from 900 to 1,350 watts, making them faster and more efficient for cooking larger meals and reheating. The higher wattage contributes to better overall performance, especially for cooking tasks beyond simple reheating."

Both brands are relatively similar in size. "Farberware sizes can range from 0.7 to 1.6 cubic feet. Smaller models are ideal for compact kitchens or light usage," Tam told me.

"Toshiba has more variety in size, ranging from 0.9 to 1.6 cubic feet, including larger countertop models suitable for more demanding kitchen environments."

"Toshiba is ideal for those looking for a high-performing, feature-rich microwave. With sensor cooking, inverter technology, and other advanced options, Toshiba microwaves offer more control and efficiency, making them a better option for cooking enthusiasts or larger families."

Professional chef Scott Groth, creator of the food and recipe blog I’d Rather Be a Chef, told me: "When it comes to wattage, aim for at least 800 watts for decent cooking power. "Higher-wattage microwaves generally cook food quicker and more thoroughly and often come with more bells and whistles," says Groth.

Dennis G, kitchen appliance expert from Comfort Appliance Repair, told me: "When choosing a microwave, wattage is key. For most households, 1,000 watts is the sweet spot—it cooks food quickly and evenly. Smaller households or those with lighter usage can go with 600-700 watts, though it’ll take longer to heat food."

As a general rule, Groth told me for one to two people: "Between 800-900 watts should suffice for reheating and simple meals. Look for 900-1,200 watts for three to four people to handle larger portions and more diverse cooking."

"The size you need depends on how much you use your microwave," Dennis G. told me. If you're wondering how to choose a microwave, the type you need will depend on how it will be used. Groth told me, "A basic countertop model will do fine if you’re just reheating leftovers or making popcorn." 

"However, to cook more elaborate meals, consider a convection microwave [like the Breville BMO870BSS1BUC1 Combi Wave Microwave] that combines traditional microwave cooking with convection heat for even better results. 

"More advanced features would include a built-in air fryer, steam cooking capabilities, and Bluetooth connectivity… but it’s up to you to determine if you will use this as a cooking or reheating tool."

What size microwave is best?

Groth told me: "Here’s the scoop: If you cook for a family or entertain often, a larger model, around 2.0 cubic feet or more, will give you the flexibility you need. For solo cooks or smaller kitchens, something around 1.5 cubic feet might be more manageable. It depends on your cooking habits and kitchen space. 

"Measure your cabinet or countertop before buying your microwave to ensure that it will fit! Some microwaves are built to be placed on the countertop, over a range (meaning they have ventilation capabilities), or in a built-in cabinet. Ensure that you are buying the appropriate microwave for the space."

I've got a microwave oven, but after writing this article I'm seriously tempted to invest in a toaster oven, too, if only I had more room in my kitchen (that's where the best compact microwaves can come in handy).

Both toaster ovens and microwaves serve a purpose and depending on your budget, household size and cooking preferences, one will no doubt be more useful than the other.

Chef Tiffany Sutherland told me: "A toaster oven is like a mini version of your regular oven. It has heating elements that create dry heat, perfect for toasting, baking and even broiling small portions. Think of it as a more versatile mini oven.

"A microwave uses electromagnetic waves to heat food quickly. It’s great for reheating leftovers or cooking things that have a lot of moisture. A big difference is that it doesn’t brown or crisp food."

As well as Sutherland, I also caught up with Sarah Clary from Hamiliton Beach to find out more about each kitchen appliance, looking at the differences, pros and cons, price, design, power and size. Read on to find out more.

"A toaster oven is a versatile small kitchen appliance that combines the functions of a toaster and an oven. It can toast bread, bake, broil and reheat food," kitchen appliance expert Sarah Clary, from Hamilton Beach Brands, told me.

"It's smaller than a conventional oven, making it ideal for small kitchens or quick meals. Some toaster ovens can even air fry, dehydrate and grill foods," she says. "It uses less energy than a full-sized oven, which can be more economical for small cooking tasks. It also heats up faster, saving time."

A microwave is a kitchen appliance that uses radiation to heat and cook food. Clary told TopTenReviews: "Microwaves are great for quickly reheating leftovers, defrosting frozen food and cooking certain dishes." They tend to be easy to use, cheap to run and energy-efficient. 

While they cook in a different way to even the best toaster ovens, if you buy a combination or convection microwave it might come with toasting or grilling capacities.

Toaster oven vs microwave: Price

There isn't a huge difference in price between toaster ovens and microwaves but as with any kitchen gadget, the more you spend the more features you can expect.

Clary told me: "Toaster ovens range from $50-$700. Basic models are $50-$100 and feature simple operations like toast, bake, reheat, air fry. Mid-range models are $100-$300 and can offer temperature probes, more capacity, double ovens and more precise temperature controls. 

"Luxury models are $300-$700 and can have advanced digital controls, wifi, steam and are typically made with higher end materials."

If you want to know how much does a microwave cost, Clary says: "Microwaves range from $50 to $300 depending on features. A basic model is $50-$150 and has simple features such as reheat, defrost, and basic cook settings. Mid-range microwaves $150-$300 and have extra features such as sensor cooking and more power levels. Luxury models are $300+ and can offer convection cooking, build-in designs, smart technology, air fry, and a better build quality."

Energy-efficient models may also be more expensive, but they will save you money on bills in the long term.

• Verdict: Both appliances are fairly affordable but "toaster ovens are generally more expensive," says Sutherland.

Microwave vs oven: Design & Features

"Toaster ovens use heating elements to cook food while microwaves use magnetic waves. Air Fry is standard function on a toaster oven," Clary told me.

Toaster ovens tend to cook food in a similar way to traditional ovens, heating electric coils to cook, crisp, brown and caramelize foods. By contrast microwaves use electromagnetic waves that bounce off the interior walls and penetrate food, causing water and fat molecules to heat up and it's these vibrations that cook the food from the inside out.

Clary adds: "Toaster ovens are versatile, energy efficient, portable and are good for quickly preheating foods and cooking evenly. But they have limited capacity and take up counter space."

Microwaves are faster than toaster ovens. "They often produce uneven cooking, and loss of taste and texture compared with a toaster oven. They also have limited cooking techniques," says Clary, unless it is a convection/combi microwave.

Sutherland told me: "Toaster ovens usually have a glass door, removable racks and a bunch of settings for toasting, baking and broiling. More high-end ones might have convection features. Microwaves are typically more enclosed, with a turntable inside. Higher-end models might have sensor cooking or even grilling features."

Beyond their basic design and function, microwaves can come with various additional features, such as presets, steaming and self-cleaning mode. Generally, the more advanced the features are, the more expensive the appliance can be.

Both appliances are powerful and their power is measured in watts, says Clary.

Toaster ovens are typically smaller in size, but use more energy (1,200-1,800 watts) however they are better at preserving the food’s texture. Microwaves typically have a power range of 700 to 1,300 watts, making them less powerful but more energy-efficient than toaster ovens. 

Toaster ovens tend to be more compact than microwaves. 

• Verdict: Toaster ovens are often smaller but use more energy than microwaves and they have longer cooking times. Microwaves are more energy efficient, irrespective of whether it has an Energy Star certification or not.

Microwave vs oven: Which is best?

Toaster ovens and microwaves do different things and which gadget is better for you will depend on your household size, budget and cooking preferences. 

Clary told me: "For quick reheating and defrosting, a microwave is your best bet. However for baking, toasting or air frying, a toaster oven will give you better results."

She adds: "Microwaves are great for speed and versatility. They can handle a wide range of tasks including defrosting, steaming and cooking. A toaster oven is excellent for crisping, broiling, toasting and baking. These are smaller and more energy-efficient than a large full-sized oven."

If you like crispy, toasted foods and do a lot of small-batch baking, then go for a toaster oven, Sutherland recommended.

"If you’re all about quick reheating and simple cooking, a microwave is your best bet. If you can afford to have both, I’d say keep each of these in your kitchen because they both have their strengths.

"And Don’t forget about combo units that are both toaster ovens and microwaves. They can help you save space if you’re tight on countertop space. Also think about your energy usage. Microwaves are generally more energy-efficient for quick jobs, while toaster ovens are better for longer cooking tasks."

I was thankful that the Toshiba Countertop Microwave arrived in good condition. The box had a deep cut on one side from delivery, but fortunately, the contents were unharmed. The microwave was securely packed in Styrofoam, and most of the accessories were packed inside the microwave oven itself. 

The contents include the glass turntable, bake tray, air fryer basket, lower wire rack, grill rack, manual, and recipe booklet.

The Toshiba Countertop Microwave isn’t small, but it’s not a bulky appliance, making it a viable compact microwave option. It measures 11.8 x 20.6 x 16.3in (h x w x d) and weighs 36.8 pounds. The sleek black and stainless-steel finish blended well with my other black and stainless-steel appliances. There should be a minimum 3-inch clearance on the top, left, and right, along with a 1-inch clearance in the rear.

The digital control panel is on the front right side and is easy to read and operate. There are press buttons for Power, Broil/Bake, Combi, Pro Defrost, Sensor Cook, Kitchen Timer/Clock, and Sound On/Off/Lock. At the bottom of the control panel is a dial for making selections and the Stop/Cancel button.

Toshiba ‎ML2-TC10SAIT: Performance

I was eager to start testing the Toshiba Counter Microwave. I baked Nestle chocolate chip cookies using the broil/convection setting. They were crisp and crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside. I baked cookies on several occasions. Sometimes, I used the air fry tray, and sometimes I used the air fry basket. For this function, the tray goes on the lower rack (as opposed to the higher grill rack).

I followed the instructions to preheat the oven to 375°F and bake at that temperature for 13 minutes. The cookies normally bake at 350°F for 13 minutes, but I wanted to see how they would turn out following the instructions for the appliance. The first time, I took the cookies out around 7 or 8 minutes so they wouldn’t burn. Keep in mind that the instructions are guidance and not written in stone. I hovered over the appliances to ensure they didn’t burn.

In my next test, I made Italian meatballs. I chose Convection, set to 400°F (no need to preheat). Then, I put the meatballs in the air fryer tray and placed the tray on the high rack. The meatballs baked for 12 minutes. They were delicious—tender and juicy.

When making chicken breasts, I used the Combination feature (C1), which took approximately 30 minutes. On another occasion, I made chicken thighs and then chicken legs. Each time, they came out well. However, they were greasier than I prefer since I usually cook them in a manner that allows the grease to drip through to a bottom tray—and this was not an option since I needed to place the tray on a rack.

The Toshiba Countertop Microwave also has other features. For example, the sensor cook feature is great for reheating food and also for cooking baked potatoes and pizza. The HomeFry mode has presets for cooking frozen foods (for example, H1 for Frozen French Fries and H4 for Frozen chicken wings).

There are also other features that you would expect in a microwave. For example, I popped popcorn (Orville Redenbacher), which came out nearly perfect—just a few unpopped kernels—and warmed up pre-cooked meals as well. They turned out well, and the meals were heated evenly. The appliance can also perform other microwave functions, such as weight defrost and time defrost.

You can also lock the microwave so children can’t operate it.

One thing to keep in mind is that you have to use the accessories appropriately to get the desired results. For example, there’s a baking tray and an air fryer basket (which can’t be used with the microwave function). Neither the lower wire nor the grill rack can be used for the microwave function. However, the trays and racks need to be placed on the glass turntable for non-microwave functions.

The recipe book provides instructions on when and how to use the accessories (e.g., the air fryer basket is placed on the lower rack when baking cookies and the air fry tray is placed on the higher rack when making chicken-based recipes).

On one hand, it can be rather tedious to remember the presets and proper use of accessories. But on the other hand, having a microwave that can also serve as a countertop oven is quite convenient.

The noise level is 50 dB, which is comparable to moderate rainfall.

Cleaning the appliance is pretty easy. Hot, soapy water can be used to clean the front of the microwave, the cooking compartment, the turntable and roller ring, and the trays and racks.

How I tested the Toshiba ‎ML2-TC10SAIT

I tested the Toshiba Countertop Microwave for several weeks, off and on. I prepared various foods and evaluated build quality, performance, taste, ease of use, and cleaning.

These days, you generally know what to expect when buying a microwave. It’ll have Express Cook functions, preset auto-cook buttons, and at least one defrost option. But did you know microwaves have smart capabilities?

When I was given the chance to test the Sharp SMC1169KS 1.1 cu. ft. 1000W Smart Stainless Steel Countertop Microwave Oven, I took it, simply because I wanted to see how Alexa voice commands would work with a microwave.

Over a week, I used all the various functions and features. I got a better idea of how Alexa can simplify using a microwave, even if it might not save you more time. Sharp SMC1169KS Smart Countertop Microwave: Price & availability

Sharp prices the SMC1169KS 1.1 cu. ft. 1000W Smart Stainless Steel Countertop Microwave Oven at $149.99. You can either buy it direct from Sharp, or via Amazon for the same price. I couldn’t find it listed at other retailers like Walmart or Best Buy. However, it appears to be sold through smaller appliance stores or brands for a much higher price (between $200-$240).

Considering the size, wattage, and ability to work with Alexa, I’d say $149.99 is reasonable. My research shows that most microwaves with Alexa capability are more expensive. Even microwaves that are smaller or with lesser wattage are priced higher, so this is a great find.

Sharp SMC1169KS Smart Countertop Microwave: Setup

Setting up this microwave wasn’t as easy as I hoped. To begin, I removed the microwave from the cardboard box and packaged it in foam pieces (which I don’t think are recyclable). After plugging in the microwave, I tried to set the time, and it worked at first. I don’t know what happened, but suddenly, the microwave time was an hour ahead. No matter how much I attempted to fix it, I could never figure it out (and I tried over multiple days). Finally, my father managed to set the correct time in the microwave. Unfortunately, the next day, it was an hour ahead.

This microwave comes with a Child-resistant Door Lock that I found bothersome. The door remains locked for the cooking time, plus 30 minutes after it finishes the cooking operation, until you hit the 0/Unlock button. This means that you can’t just push the door button to pause or stop the cooking time because it won’t work. I disabled the Child-Resistant Door Lock because I don’t have a child. Disabling the Child-Resistant Door Lock took seconds and made for a better testing experience for me.

The last thing I needed to do was connect the microwave to Alexa. By doing this, you can command the microwave to set a cook time, pause, resume, or stop a cooking process, resulting in a somewhat hands-off cooking experience (of course, you’ll have to add and remove food). You can even set up automatic cooking functions through Alexa voice commands. It can be difficult to remember all Alexa instructions. However, they’re written out in the manual, so you can reference it as needed until you remember them all.

Setting up the microwave with Alexa was a hassle. I first connected the microwave to the Alexa app on my phone. It was a very simple process and didn’t take long. Unfortunately, the microwave occasionally got disabled or did not respond through the app, and I had to reconnect it through Wi-Fi.

Mostly, I had no trouble controlling the microwave through the app. However, it was frustrating that the app had to be open to operate the microwave. I couldn’t flip through other apps or close the app because voice commands wouldn’t work. With that in mind, I’d suggest connecting an Echo or some other Alexa device so you can continue with your work or use your phone and still control the microwave.

Eventually, I borrowed an Echo for testing purposes. Connecting the Echo to the microwave took far longer than it should, likely because the Echo I used was an older version. Once the connection was made, I could command the microwave easily—as long as I remembered how to phrase the voice commands. If you don’t say the command exactly as it’s written in the manual, Alexa won't complete the task, which is a drawback.

Sharp SMC1169KS Smart Countertop Microwave: Design

The Sharp SMC1169KS 1.1 cu. ft. 1000W Smart Stainless Steel Countertop Microwave Oven is a sharp-looking 1.1 cubic foot microwave with a 43-inch power cord. Most stainless steel microwaves are black with stainless steel accents. However, this Sharp microwave has a bright stainless steel color with black accents, making it stand out in a kitchen.

The control panel on the right side of the microwave is split into various sections. The top section features pre-programmed cooking functions: Potato, Beverage, Veggie, Frozen Pizza, Popcorn, and Reheat. Below is the Auto Defrost section with buttons for Meat, Poultry, and Fish. The next sections are Time Cook, Power Level, and Time Defrost. This is followed by the number pad section, which also doubles as the Express Cook function.

The control panel bottom has four buttons: WiFi Connect, Timer/Clock, Stop/Clear, and Start/+30SEC.

This particular microwave has a built-in rotating plate and a removable 12.4-inch glass plate. It doesn’t have a handle but rather a push button that pops the microwave open when you press it.

You can control Alexa with over 50 voice commands and Alexa connection capability. To utilize this feature, you need to download an Alexa app or connect to an Alexa product.

Last but not least, this Microwave Oven is ADA-compliant. This means the design makes it an accessible option for those who require an ADA-accessible kitchen.

Sharp SMC1169KS Smart Countertop Microwave: Performance

When cooking, heating, or reheating food, the Sharp SMC1169KS 1.1 cu. ft. 1000W Smart Stainless Steel Countertop Microwave Oven did a solid job. Although I don’t have a lot of countertop space in my own house, I think this microwave is the right size for most people and has an excellent power level – 1000 watts – for most of their needs. I dislike loud microwaves, and though this Sharp unit wasn't the quietest, it wasn't that loud, either. It had an average sound rating of 65 dB. 

You must press the Time Cook button followed by the cook time and power level to set a designated cook time. Otherwise, you can use the Express Cook function. This is a short cut that lets you push numbers 1-6 to cook between 1 minute and 6 minutes at the highest power level. The Start/+30SEC button allows you to add another 30 seconds to the cooking time or increase it in 30-second intervals. There is no memory procedure feature, which means you can’t save your own preset cook times/power levels.

One of the most convenient aspects of this microwave is the preset auto-cook function. There are six different options – Potato, Beverage, Veggie, Frozen Pizza, Popcorn, and Reheat. Below, you’ll find a breakdown of the cooking time based on the auto-cook function you choose.

• Frozen Pizza: (4.0 oz.) 1:30, (8.0 oz.) 3:00, (14.0 oz.) 3:40
• Popcorn: (3.3 oz.) 1:40, (1.5 oz.) 1:10
• Reheat: (9.0 oz.) 2:30, (12.0 oz.) 3:30, (18.0 oz.) 4:30

I tested these preset functions in a number of ways—like cooking a baked potato, heating water to make sweet tea, reheating leftovers, and cooking frozen broccoli. Everything worked well, especially the Reheat, Veggie, and Frozen Pizza buttons. About the Beverage button, 50 seconds wasn’t enough to heat one mug of water to the temperature I needed to make tea. I found that one minute and thirty seconds resulted in a better temperature.  

Similarly, when I hit the Potato auto cook function twice, I found that seven minutes and thirty seconds didn’t completely cook two very large potatoes. However, I think time would be enough for smaller or medium-sized potatoes. (It should also be noted that cooking a potato in the microwave takes less time than cooking it in an oven or air fryer. Both take between 30 minutes and an hour to do.)

This microwave’s popcorn setting is Orville Redenbacher Certified. This means that the Popcorn button is designed to perfectly cook the Classic Size (3.3 oz.) or Single Serve Mini Bag (1.16 oz.) of Orville Redenbacher's Microwave Popcorn. I did not have Orville Redenbacher popcorn on hand. However, I thought 1 minute and 40 seconds was a reasonable cooking time for the popcorn bag I tested this feature on. 

Where most microwaves have Timed Defrost and Weight Defrost buttons, this Sharp microwave lacks a Weight Defrost option. Instead, Sharp has included three preset Auto Defrost buttons based on meat type – meat, poultry, and fish. There are different cook times based on meat ounces. For example, the Auto Defrost Poultry button has different cook times depending on 24, 32, 40, and 49-ounce poultry cuts. I really liked this feature, however, I wasn't always sure how much the meat I wanted to cook would weigh.

Other features of this Sharp microwave include kitchen timer mode and Multi-Stage Cooking. Sharp suggests using the Multi-Stage Cooking feature to defrost food and cook it. Essentially, this function allows you to cook for a certain amount of time at a specific power level, followed by a different amount of time at a different power level. The microwave automatically switches between the two cook times and power levels.

Throughout the testing process, I sometimes pressed buttons directly on the microwave and sometimes controlled it with Alexa voice commands. To be fair, it is pretty cool to see the microwave start up after an Alexa voice command. I also liked that Alexa paused, resumed, and stopped the microwave when I asked it to. This is a really helpful feature for those with accessibility needs or simply for users who are busy in the kitchen and need some help from Alexa. 

However, using Alexa took longer than pushing the microwave buttons. For one, I had to remember the Alexa commands exactly as indicated in the operation manual. It was easy to recall “Alexa cook for 30 seconds,” but I just couldn’t recall the different ounces of fish used in the Auto Defrost Fish set. I also couldn't remember that I had to phrase it as “Alexa, defrost X of Fish.” I wasted time flipping through the manual to see the exact phrasing. Sometimes, Alexa asked me questions about my commands, like “For how long?” or “When do you want me to do that?” In the time it took me to answer, I could have just pressed the button.

Alexa has over 50 voice command options, and I highly doubt you can immediately remember them. It will take some time, and perhaps once that’s complete, you’ll find that using Alexa with the microwave is the right option for you. In the meantime, you must be patient or use the microwave buttons.

Cleaning-wise, there’s not much to do with this microwave except keep the inside clean. Cloth and water clean the microwave well, though I occasionally use dish soap for tough jobs. You can hand wash the glass tray or throw it in the dishwasher.   

Sharp SMC1169KS Smart Countertop Microwave: User reviews

There are no updated reviews of this Sharp microwave on the Sharp website. As of this review, it has a 4.6 out of 5-star rating from 48 reviews on Amazon. Customers praised this microwave for its ability to cook at faster speeds and how easy it was to set it up with Alexa. One reviewer pointed out that they also had trouble setting the time.

A few reviewers noted that this microwave has a 12-inch glass platter and a similar; the previous version was 14 inches in diameter. However, it didn’t seem to affect their use of the product. Overall, most customers found this Sharp microwave to be a well-made microwave that suited all of their needs.

If you don’t need a microwave that’s quite as large, powerful, or with Alexa capability, consider the Cuisinart CMW-70 Microwave Oven. It’s cheaper and a quality microwave. Both microwaves have multi-stage cooking functions; however, users can also set up three Memory Procedures or a saved designated cook time with the Cuisinart microwave.

The GE Smart Countertop Microwave Oven is a comparable microwave with Alexa and Google Assistant capabilities. It may be slightly smaller (.9 cu. ft.) and more powerful (900 watts) than the Sharp microwave, but users might be interested in Scan-to-Cook Technology, which allows you to scan the barcode of frozen foods to send the exact cook time directly to the microwave.

These days, many microwaves double as grills and air fryers—and if that sounds like a good fit for you, check out the Samsung 1.2 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave with Power Convection in Black Glass. It’s a much higher-priced unit than the Sharp microwave. However, Samsung offers crispy foods and voice control capabilities through Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung Bixby.

With so many amazing kitchen appliances out there, it's useful to know the difference between a microwave and an oven. I own both, but I tend to use the microwave more often, as it heats up food quicker, doesn't require any pre-heating, and is more economical, especially if you own one of the best microwaves or the best compact microwaves.

However, both types of oven have pros and cons, and in this article, I'll discuss the differences, design features, and capabilities.

While microwaves and ovens are both kitchen appliances used for food preparation, but the methods used for heating and cooking foods are rather different.

In a microwave, food is heated by electromagnetic radiation, while the best ovens use both an electric heating element and a fan to circulate the heat and cook foods evenly.

Maria Opre, technology expert, told TopTenReviews: "Microwaves are usually compact and designed for quick, easy heating with features like preset cooking programs and defrosting. Ovens are bigger, designed for various cooking methods, and often include features like multiple racks, broiling, and convection settings."

The best microwaves are convenient, quick, and energy-saving; they are cheap and have minimal running costs. While they generally can't cook in the same way as ovens, a combination or convection microwave (often known as a combi) can do oven-type cooking, including grilling, steaming, and baking—but they are more expensive because of the premium features.

Meanwhile, ovens cost more than microwaves and have larger cooking capacities.

Appliances specialist Robert Walden says: "A microwave uses electromagnetic waves to heat food fast by causing water molecules to vibrate. An oven uses either gas or electric heating elements to cook food more slowly and evenly. 

"Microwaves are ideal for reheating and simple cooking, while ovens are better for baking, roasting, and grilling."

Microwave vs oven: Price

There's a dramatic difference in price between a microwave and an oven.

Firstly, how much does a microwave cost? "Microwaves are usually less expensive than ovens due to their simpler technology and smaller size," says Opre. "Ovens, particularly built-in and high-end models, can be significantly pricey. The price difference reflects the functionality and versatility of each appliance."

Depending on size, power and features, microwaves tend to range from $60 for a cheaply-made budget or compact model (like the Willz Countertop Small Microwave Oven for $69.87 on Amazon), around $149 for a mid-range countertop one (like the TOSHIBA ML-EM45PIT(BS) Countertop Microwave Oven for $193.60 on Amazon), and up to $2,000 for a built-in premium model (like the LG STUDIO 1.7 cu. ft. Over-the-Range Convection Microwave Oven with Air Fry for $949 at LG). 

Walden says: "Basic models are on the lower end, while those with advanced features, such as convection or smart technology, are dearer. Combi microwaves, which combine microwave and convection oven functions, usually cost between $150 and $700."

Ovens, on the other hand, are much more expensive, and prices depend on the type. Electric ovens can range from $300 to $3,000 (for an induction stove); gas ovens tend to cost between $400 and $2,500, with dual fuel ovens costing from £1,500 to $4,000 or more.

Walden says: "Basic freestanding models are on the lower end, while high-end built-in or professional-grade ovens are way more expensive. The price varies greatly based on brand, capacity, and additional features."

You might find you are paying more for a 'name,' plus higher-end brands and models with advanced features and smart tech cost more. GE, Samsung, and Garland are known for being high-quality, but they also have a high price tag.

Bigger ovens with more burners cost more, so remember to factor in installation costs—especially for a gas one, which can add several hundred dollars to the total price.

Energy-efficient models may also be more expensive, but they will save you money on bills in the long term.

Microwave vs oven: Design & Features

Opre says, "Microwaves are available in countertop and over-the-range models. Countertop microwaves are portable and easy to place anywhere, while over-the-range models save counter space and often include built-in ventilation systems.

"Ovens come in various types, including conventional, convection, and steam ovens. Conventional ovens use bog-standard heating elements, convection ovens circulate air for even cooking, and steam ovens cook with moisture to retain nutrients."

Where these two kitchen appliances really differ is in how they cook foods. Standard microwaves can reheat leftovers, defrost frozen food, and cook simple dishes like baked potatoes, popcorn, and scrambled eggs. A combi (convection) microwave does all this but can also do oven-like cooking, such as roasting, browning, and crisping foods. An over-the-range microwave is just a standard one that fits over a cooker.

Microwaves use a type of electromagnetic radiation to cook food. When microwaves are emitted, they are absorbed by the water, fat, and sugar molecules in food, causing them to vibrate and produce heat, which cooks them. Microwaves are more space-saving and either fit on top of a counter or over the range. 

By contrast, standard ovens are larger, can cook bigger portions of food, and can crisp and brown meals more efficiently. A traditional oven uses heat for cooking, working by heating up the air inside the oven, which cooks the food. Either gas or electricity can fuel them, with the heat being distributed through convection or radiant heat.

Beyond their basic design and function, microwaves and ovens can come with various additional features. Useful extras for a microwave include touch control, automatic programs, presets, sensor and convection cooking, steaming, and eco-mode. In an oven, extra features could include a self-cleaning mode, timer and delayed start features, and touchscreen controls. Remember that the more advanced the features are, the more expensive the appliance can be.

• Verdict: Microwaves tend to be more basic than traditional ovens, with fairly standard designs that don't deviate from the basic rectangular shape with a door and turntable inside. Ovens are often more well-designed, with multiple styles to choose from. Microwaves tend to have more features than ovens.

Microwave vs oven: Power & Size

"Microwaves typically have a power range of 600 to 1,200 watts, making them less powerful but more energy-efficient than ovens. Ovens require more power and are larger, offering more cooking space and higher temperatures for complex dishes," says Opre.

Microwaves are smaller than ovens and tend to fit on a countertop, over the range, or into cabinetry. They generally cook food faster than ovens, as they can generate heat directly into the food rather than transferring the heat from the air.

They are also better for reheating and defrosting.

Ovens can reach much higher temperatures than microwaves, so they are better suited for cooking methods such as baking and roasting. They also have more power to brown and crisp foods.

• Verdict: Ovens are more powerful and bigger than microwaves, but the latter is more energy-efficient and quicker. Because the food absorbs the radiation, time and energy aren't wasted heating the space (in the oven) around it.

Microwave vs oven: which is best?

Depending on your household size, budget, and cooking needs, you should choose between a microwave and a traditional oven.

Microwaves are affordable, compact and cook food faster than ovens. They are also cheaper to run and more energy efficient. But they are not as versatile as traditional ovens because they can't brown or crisp food in the same way, so they are better suited for cooking and reheating softer foods, rather thank roasting, grilling or baking. You can do these functions with a combi microwave however, but not as effectively.

Traditional ovens are more versatile than microwaves, because they offer various cooking methods from broiling, baking, grilling and roasting. 

Opre says: "The choice between a microwave and an oven depends on your cooking needs. Microwaves are best for quick heating and simple meals, while ovens are versatile and essential for baking and roasting. Both have their place in a well-equipped kitchen.

"Combining a microwave and an oven in your kitchen can provide the most flexibility. Consider your cooking habits and kitchen space when choosing between them. Newer appliances often include smart features, making them easier to use and more energy-efficient."

Is it healthier to cook in a microwave or oven?

Here's the thing: some nutrients (such as vitamin C) break down when exposed to heat, both in a microwave and a regular oven. But microwaves cook food faster. They do a better job of preserving these nutrients.

Can a microwave replace an oven?

My microwave has served me well, but it was time for an upgrade, so I was so glad to test the Cuisinart CMW-70 Microwave Oven. It’s been so long since I had an updated microwave that I didn’t realize how many functions it now offered—like an automatic two-step cooking feature.

I tested this compact microwave for over a week, using all the functions, settings, and features. I wanted to understand better what microwaves can do and how they can make cooking easier for me. Keep reading for an in-depth look at this Cuisinart microwave to see if it fits you well.

The Cuisinart CMW-70 Microwave Oven retails at full price on the Cuisinart website for $129.95. Oddly enough, retailers like Walmart, Home Depot, and Office Depot sell the same model for a higher price, between $133 and $168. Amazon appears to be the only retailer that prices it lower at $124.80.

This microwave isn’t the largest and lacks smart features or cooking functions beyond heating – such as air frying or roasting – making the $129.95 retail price feel high. Plenty of similar microwaves are more affordable but may not have the Cuisinart name or reputation.

Cuisinart CMW-70 0.7 Cu. Ft. Microwave: First Impressions & Setup

Setting up the Cuisinart CMW-70 Microwave Oven took no time at all. It arrived in a cardboard box and was safely packed with foam pieces. After removing the microwave and the inserts (glass plate and turntable ring) from the box, I plugged it in and removed the stickers on the front of the door. When I first opened the microwave door, it smelled slightly like paint.

The packaging included a manual that breaks down all cooking functions and provides insight into maintaining and cleaning the microwave. I kept the booklet on hand and used it during my testing.

The only thing I needed to do during the setup process was set the time, which took seconds. I also needed to configure a Memory Procedure. The Memory Procedure is a shortcut that allows users to select a specific cooking time and power level. This is especially helpful if I know I often cook items on a specific power level for one minute and 30 seconds. This helps ensure that my food is cooked evenly and consistently. I also don't have to worry about manually adjusting the power level. The microwave does not have a 1:30 cook setting. However, with the Memory Procedure, I can create that short cut, and the microwave will store it so that I can use it whenever I wish.

Although I only tested one, the microwave lets you set three different memory procedures. It took seconds to do. When I want to cook something for 1 minute and 30 seconds, I only have to press the 0/Memory button once to use the shortcut.

Cuisinart CMW-70 0.7 Cu. Ft. Microwave: Design

The Cuisinart CMW-70 Microwave Oven is a small microwave with a .7 cubic-foot capacity, suitable for those with restricted counter space or who live in smaller units like an apartment. It’s black with stainless steel accents for a modern look.

The control panel is on the right side of the microwave. On the top are preprogrammed touchpad functions like Reheat, Beverage, Pizza, Potato, Popcorn, Frozen, Soften/Melt, and Veggie. The Cook Time, Weight Defrost, Time Defrost, Power Level, and Clock/Timer buttons can also be found. Below that area is the numeric touchpad and the Stop/Cancel, Memory, and Start buttons.

Inside the microwave is a removable turntable ring and glass plate. Overall, it has a very simplistic microwave design.

Cuisinart CMW-70 0.7 Cu. Ft. Microwave: Performance

There are more functions to test with the Cuisinart CMW-70 Microwave Oven than meets the eye—I did so over a week. Overall, it’s an easy microwave to use.

As mentioned, this is a small microwave, so if you have particularly large plates or tall cups, they might not fit inside the unit. For instance, I was defrosting some salmon in a package, which could not rotate on the glass plate because it was too large. I didn’t have an issue with popcorn bags, though I could tell that larger ones would not fully pop.

Let me start by saying that this microwave allows you to adjust the cooking time and power level. I don’t see the point in changing the power level except when doing two-stage cooking (which I’ll discuss below), especially since this microwave is only 700 watts, below the 1000-watt average for microwaves. Adjusting power to a lower level isn’t in most people’s best interests. However, you have the option if you want it.

In the past, you would enter your cook time (like 1:45) and then hit start, and the microwave would begin. With this Cuisinart microwave, you must select Cook Time before entering the time. If you don’t, the microwave will enter into Express Cook mode and automatically set a time of 1:00 if you press the 1 button. This is at 2:00 if you push the 2 button. Express Cook mode is a shortcut that sets the power level at 100 percent and automatically selects 1 to six minutes. This is done when you press buttons one through six.

Even though my previous microwave required the Cook Time button, I never got accustomed to it. Perhaps because I grew up when microwaves didn't have automatic functions. I only point this out because other reviewers noted how frustrating it was to get used to.

I liked the +30SEC button. You can use it with the Express Cook shortcut. If I hit 1, the microwave cooks at 1:00. However, if I wanted the cooking time to be 1:30, I'd hit 1, followed by the +30SEC button. I could also set the time in 30-second increments with this button by pressing it until it reached my desired cooking time.

There are two defrost settings based on time or weight. I typically prefer using the Time Defrost button as it's easier to input a time. With the Weight Defrost button, you input the weight in ounces between 4-100 oz. for the feature to work. I don’t have time to figure out the weight of what I need defrosted. Yes, I know some meat labels note the ounces, but often, I separate my meats when I freeze them, so I don’t have the label anymore – or the label shows the weight for all of the meat in the package and not the individual pieces that I would defrost.

My favorite thing about this microwave is the auto cook functions: Soften/Melt Popcorn, Pizza, Potato, Frozen Veggies, Beverages, and Reheat. Let’s start with Reheat. When you click Reheat and the Start button, the cook time is 6 minutes. This seemed high for me, especially when I reheated pizza. Six minutes makes sense, however, when reheating a big meal like leftover pasta and chicken. The Pizza button has a cooking time of three minutes and is best used when cooking microwave pizza.

The Popcorn button has two options—a personal or regular popcorn bag. To switch between the two cook times, I pressed the button twice. The time differences are 1 minute and 50 seconds and 3 minutes and 20 seconds. The 3-minute and 20-second options were too long for my regular-sized popcorn bag. I had to stop the cooking time, or the popcorn burned, so I typically used the personal-sized cook time option.

I love the Soften/Melt option and can’t wait to try it in the winter. It can melt and soften butter or chocolate, which I rely on in my holiday baking. I had to push the button multiple times to switch between butter melt, butter soften, or chocolate melt. This resulted in three different time settings: 1 minute, 15 seconds, and 3 minutes and 30 seconds, respectively. Cuisinart suggests using it for ½ stick of butter or 4 oz of chocolate. I tested the butter melt and soften feature with scoops of butter and found that using the soften feature – or 15-second cook time – was a better choice than the butter melt feature because the butter usually became soft faster than the one-minute time.

I used the Beverage button to heat water in a mug to make sweet tea. It is available in three sizes: 4 oz., 8 oz., and 12 oz. of liquid, which resulted in cook times of 50 seconds, 1 minute and 40 seconds, and 2 minutes and 40 seconds. The 8 oz. and 12 oz. settings accurately warmed the water to my desired temperature. (I never heated a 4 oz beverage).

The Frozen Veggie function worked better than I expected. I usually don’t buy frozen veggies, but my parents do, so I got some of their broccoli and popped it in the microwave. I was impressed by how the microwave defrosted and cooked the veggies so they were ready to eat. Like many functions, it has three options: 4 oz. or 4 minutes, 8 oz. or 6 minutes and 30 seconds, and 16 oz. or 11 minutes.

Now for the final Auto Cook function – Potato. I’d rather cook a potato in the microwave, especially if I’m making a baked potato. Cooking a potato in the oven took an hour. In my air fryer? Forty minutes. I don’t have that kind of time. There are three cook time options under the Potato setting – 1 piece at 6 minutes, 2 at 8 minutes and 30 seconds, and 3 at 12 minutes. Six minutes is the right amount of time to prepare one baked potato.

I don’t often use the microwave enough to use the Two-Stage Cooking feature, but I tested it for this review. Admittedly, this is a pretty cool feature. Say I want to cook a food item for a certain amount of time at an 80 percent power level. Then, it must cook for a shorter time at 60 percent power. With Two-Stage Cooking, I can automatically set the microwave to do this so that I don’t have to return to the microwave and set the secondary time and power level.

I’ll likely never use this setting outside of testing. It may be an excellent option for baking, though I struggled to figure out other instances where it might be helpful. I used it to cook noodles in a bowl. I set the cook time and power level higher than the secondary cook time and power level. The idea was to cook the noodles and then warm them for a few more minutes. It worked, though. Setting it up was a bit of a hassle. You'll probably not remember how to do it off the top of your head without a booklet on hand.

Finally, cleaning this microwave was easy. It’s a small unit, and the glass plate is easily removable. I washed it by hand. Cuisinart suggests baking soda and water to clean grease and food particles. However, I found water and a little soap to work well.

Many customers pointed out they were looking for a smaller microwave like this one. They also pointed out that it didn’t take up too much counter space and was powerful and easy to use. The Hamilton Beach 1.1 Stainless Steel Microwave is an affordable option to consider. If you have the budget to purchase a microwave with air fryer functions, consider the Panasonic HomeChef. Microwave ovens are great time-savers, and if you own one of the best compact microwaves, they are also really space-saving.

The best microwaves are also energy efficient, and as a bonus, they require far less washing up than other cooking methods. 

"Microwaving food is an excellent way to cook—it is quick and convenient, does not alter the nutritional quality of the food, and uses relatively little energy," Dr. Deborah Lee, from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy, told Top Ten Reviews.

However, a common question is: Can microwaves kill bacteria? I consulted the experts to find out.

Can microwaves kill bacteria?

Here's the thing: Microwaves don't actually kill bacteria, but they can kill the bacteria in foods when heated to a safe internal temperature.

And now for the science bit: food scientist Dr. Bryan Quoc Le told Top Ten Reviews: "The microwave irradiation from the appliance can rapidly heat the internal water of bacteria, causing their proteins to denature and the water to vaporize rapidly.

"While these effects are not uniform and are shielded by the water of the food itself, occasionally there are heat spots in the food where the bacteria are fully killed if the temperature reaches 212°F, boiling the bacteria from within."

To reach a safe temperature, the microwave needs to get hot enough to kill the bacteria present in food. But remember that food that is not heated for long enough or to the correct temperature can still contain bacteria.

Foods can be cooked unevenly because of irregular shapes or differences in thickness. Despite using a turntable (to distribute the heat), microwaves can often leave cold spots in food where bacteria can live.

Dr. Lee adds, "Microwaves have been found to kill bacteria even at lower temperatures by destroying the bacterial cell wall. However, note that improperly cooked microwaved food is a common cause of food poisoning. There may be ‘cold spots’ in the foods during cooking. For example, the microwave can only penetrate the food to a depth of 2cm. So, the microwave cooks the food from the outside first and the middle position last."

"This is why food needs to be carefully heated in a microwave, regularly stopping and stirring and not eating until it is piping hot all the way through. Ideally, use a thermometer, and the food should reach 167°F for at least 30 seconds," she says.

To avoid food cooking unevenly in your microwave oven:

• Follow package instructions, rotate, and (if the instructions call for it) stir foods during the cooking process. 
• Use a food thermometer to check the temperature of microwaved foods in different spots.
• Before you eat a microwave meal, make sure it is thoroughly cooked and piping hot. 
• Observe any standing times—this helps eliminate hotspots, evens out the temperature, and lets the food cool down sufficiently so you don't burn yourself.

How long does it take to kill bacteria in a microwave?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), home microwaves (2.45 GHz) can kill some types of viruses and bacteria within 60 seconds to five minutes. However, more disinfection occurs with higher-powered microwaves.

What kind of bacteria typically lives in a microwave?

Don't be alarmed. Researchers found that your microwave oven has its own microbiome, many of which are totally harmless.

"Several bacteria live in the microwave, primarily microorganisms present on human skin," says Dr. Quoc Le. "Bacteria species that dominate microwave microbiomes include Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes, which are very similar to the ones found on our skin. 

"Many of these bacteria are harmless, and microwaves rarely pose a food safety risk." 

However, Dr. Lee warns: "E. coli and salmonella have both been found in microwaves. In fact, in one study, the microwave was referred to as a ‘microbial hotspot.’ Raw meat is a potent source of these bacteria. 

"Plus, food splatters in the microwave and can end up in the crevices and under the rotating plate. Bacteria are frequently present on the handle, which is grasped repeatedly."

How can you tell when your microwave is unsafe due to bacteria?

Dr. Quoc Le says the microwave should not contain clear spots of moist food, as these can be reservoirs for microorganisms that cause food-borne illness. Certainly, there should not be visible signs of mold."

Dr. Lee adds, "Another sign is when you switch it on, the kitchen quickly fills with a horrible, perhaps burning smell."

How to avoid bacteria in your microwave

You need to clean your microwave to avoid getting bacteria in it.

"Microwaves should be regularly cleaned, at the very least once per month, and as often as once per week to remove major food sources splattered around," says Dr. Quoc Le.

"Clean it with a disinfectant, such as bleach or hydrogen peroxide, to greatly reduce the level of microorganisms in the microwave."

"A more natural way to clean the microwave is to put a bowl of water and vinegar in the microwave and put it on for two minutes," says Dr. Lee. "Then remove and wipe out the inside with a damp cloth. It’s not recommended to spray kitchen cleaner inside the microwave directly as it can get into the vents and could get mixed with your food."

"You can also add lemon juice to the vinegar and water cleaning solution and microwave for two minutes, but keep the door shut and allow the steam inside it to percolate for 15 minutes. 

"If it's still dirty, paste it with baking soda and water and lather it onto the affected areas. Any sticky residue can be scraped off with a plastic implement such as an old credit card."

Verdict

The heat microwaves produce can kill bacteria and other pathogens when they get to a certain temperature. However, the effectiveness of this process largely depends on how the microwave is used. Microwaves create heat by creating electromagnetic waves that excite water molecules in food. As a result, bacteria and other microorganisms die.

It's important to stir or rotate the food halfway through cooking to ensure it's heated evenly and to a safe temperature. Microwaves heat food unevenly, so it can leave "cold spots" where bacteria can live. By doing so, the heat gets distributed evenly, and all food reaches a safe temperature.

Food should be heated to 165 degrees Fahrenheit for most bacteria to die. Using a food thermometer can help ensure that the food reaches this temperature. In addition to heating food to a safe temperature, remember that some foods are more prone to bacterial contamination than others.

Microwave ovens are undoubtedly convenient and energy-saving, but how do you know when to buy a new one? And is it worth fixing a microwave?

I consulted several experts to determine a microwave's lifespan, how to prolong its life, and when to consider replacing it.

How long should a microwave last?  

Modern microwaves are designed to last at least eight years, but if used by a big family with little or no maintenance, their lifespan is more likely to be around half a decade.

The type of microwave you own could also impact its longevity. Over-the-range microwaves are built into the cabinetry and bolted to a wall, so if they break and need replacing, it's no easy task. 

Countertop ones are easier to repair, while combi convection microwave ovens have to work harder because they are multipurpose, so they are prone to breaking sooner.

Food scientist Dr. Bryan Quoc Le says: "Microwaves can have a lifespan of anywhere from eight to 15 years, largely depending on where the appliance was manufactured."

Do more expensive microwaves last longer?

Knowing how much a microwave costs will help with this, but deciding what makes for a "good" microwave and what is considered "expensive" isn't always clear.

Tech expert Jason Farrell, from Mechanic's Diary, told Top Ten Reviews: "More expensive microwaves are often built with higher-quality materials and components, which can contribute to a longer lifespan. They also tend to come with longer warranties, which shows that the manufacturer stands behind the product. 

"But, remember that price isn't everything—reviews and brand reputation are also important factors to consider."

Dr. Quoc Le adds: "More expensive microwaves can still be subject to planned obsolescence - where the company dictates the appliance's lifespan, and the product has a set timeframe in which it can last before a new one has to be purchased."

Looking at microwaves on Amazon, I've found that you can expect to pay $115 to $318 for a Toshiba microwave, while a built-in oven/microwave combo from aesthetics-led Café would set you back $2,899. It looks like the most expensive countertop microwave listed on the site is the Panasonic NE-1054 which has an RRP of $1,300, while the cheapest is the 700-watt Farberware model at $85.

When should you replace a microwave?

There are some obvious signs your microwave needs replacing, warns Dr. Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy.

• You can’t get rid of a burning smell when it’s cooking
• The food seems to be constantly undercooked
• The door doesn’t shut properly
• The keypad doesn’t work
• The wiring looks suspect
• It is very noisy when turned on
• There are obvious staining, rust, or peeling edges

In some cases, a small repair is more cost-effective than replacing your appliance. If your food isn't properly heated, replacing your microwave would be worth considering. The same goes for if you hear a buzzing, rattling noise or can smell burning—this can be a sign that there's an obstruction in the fan blades or turntable. You should immediately turn off, unplug the microwave, and call for repair.

If the keypad isn't working properly, it could affect cooking time, but this usually just means it needs a good cleaning. However, issues with the door seal can impact the radiation level, and investing in a new one is the best option.

If your microwave has reached the 10-year mark and needs frequent repairs, it is wise to replace it with a more energy-efficient model. 

Is it worth fixing a microwave?

If the repair costs are more than 50 percent of a new microwave's, or your appliance is over four to five years old (over half its lifespan), it's generally better to replace it.

But Dr. Quoc Le says he wouldn't bother fixing a broken microwave. "Microwaves are relatively inexpensive compared with other appliances and can require extensive technical knowledge to repair. Microwaves should only be repaired when they are under warranty."

How to make a microwave last longer?

• Regularly cleaning 
• Use the correct detergent
• Avoid overloading    
• Run a cleaning cycle periodically

Farrell says: "Avoid using harsh chemicals when cleaning and follow the manufacturer's weight and size limits guidelines to prevent overloading. Also, avoid putting metal objects, aluminum foil, or certain plastics inside, as these can cause damage or even start a fire."

Microwaves are not hugely expensive, so unless they can be easily repaired, it's probably more cost-effective to buy a new one.

"Microwaves typically start to decline after ten years, so it's a good time to consider a new one," says Dr. Quoc Le.

Do microwaves lose effectiveness over time?

Yes, they do, and the best way to identify this is by noting the cooking time.

Your microwave will either cook faster or slower than expected, which indicates that the internal components have worn out. With heavy or prolonged usage and no proper maintenance, a microwave can wear out long before reaching its average life span. 

"Plus, the electronic components can start to wear down and increase electrical resistance," says Dr. Quoc Le.

"The microwave magnetron, which produces the electromagnetic waves that heat the food, can lose efficiency and generate less power, rendering the microwave less effective at heating food.

"Burned spots, charred food, and debris in the inner container can preferentially absorb microwaves instead of the food, heating other sections of the microwave rather than the dish."  

Verdict

If you want to know how long a microwave should last when choosing a microwave or just feel curious, it’ll depend on usage and the type of oven you own. Newer machines are more energy-efficient, and countertop microwaves tend to last longer than combi convection ones as they have to work harder, making them more likely to die sooner.

Certain brands, like high-end ones Wolf and Viking, tend to last longer, roughly ten to 15 years, while the average shelf life is seven to eight. Keeping your appliance well-maintained and cleaning it regularly can extend its lifespan.

Farrell says: "Modern microwaves are generally more energy-efficient than older models. If you’ve had your microwave for a while, you might consider upgrading to save on energy costs. Also, if your microwave is malfunctioning or damaged, unplug it until you can get it repaired or replaced."

Microwaves might have a lazy, ready-meal reputation, but these days, they’re far more versatile than that, with many models now offering air frying, convection, and steam cooking modes.

With so many appliances on the market, it can be hard to decide what size, power, and type of microwave is best for you, so read on. What size of microwave do I need?

When shopping for microwaves, you’ll often see them advertised in different sizes. Manufacturers may refer to models as compact, mid-size/standard, or full-size/large appliances. 

The measured dimensions and cooking capacity will vary from model to model. Still, it’s worth noting that combi-microwaves may sacrifice cooking capacity to squeeze in extra components such as heating elements and steam functions. 

David Rees, appliances expert and director of HomeSupply, said: "15 to 20 liters is often the standard microwave capacity and is best for households with two to four people. Due to size, microwaves of this capacity tend to be solo microwaves.

"Grill and combination microwaves often have a capacity of at least 21 to 30 liters, as the added capacity means they can be used for larger foods and more complex tasks. Many flatbed microwaves will have a capacity within the 25 to 30-litre range."

If you’re buying a countertop model, make sure to measure the space it will take up on your countertop and also allow enough space around it to provide safe ventilation—most manufacturers recommend leaving at least 1 inch of space at the rear of an appliance and 3 inches or more around the sides. 

You’ll also need to check the dimensions for built-in and over-the-range models. It is essential to buy an appliance designed to complement your existing cabinetry and kitchen design. 

However, just because space is limited in your kitchen doesn’t mean you can’t accommodate a larger microwave – after all, you can replace some of your existing appliances with a single combi-microwave. These models combine multiple cooking modes, such as convection oven cooking, steam cooking, and air frying, so you don’t need several appliances cluttering your countertop or taking up precious space in your cabinets. 

What features should you look out for?

Power

Microwaves with a higher power rating will, in theory, cook faster than lower-rated appliances. That doesn’t mean all appliances are built equal—we’ve seen some big differences in cooking performance between similarly rated appliances—but it’s a good indicator. 

David Miloshev, appliance technician for Fantastic Services, told us: "Assess the power wattage of the microwave model you want to buy. When you do that, remember that higher-wattage models generally provide faster cooking and need less time. A microwave with power wattage between 800 and 1200 watts for standard household use will be the most suitable."

Basic compact models start around 600W, while the most powerful consumer models can reach as high as 1,200W. If you double the wattage, you halve the cooking time, so a 600W microwave will require cooking times that are twice as long as a 1,200W appliance. 

Commercial models can reach over 3,000W, but they require dedicated 230V mains supplies; by contrast, the 120V 15A power outlets found in most US homes can only safely power appliances up to a limit of around 1,800W. 

Cooking capacity

As mentioned, you can choose from various microwave sizes, providing anything from half a cubic foot to well over 2 cubic feet of cooking capacity. A compact model may be enough for a small apartment or occasional use, but larger families will likely need to super-size their appliances. Moreover, you’ll struggle to get larger cooking dishes and casseroles into all but the biggest microwaves. Hence, it’s worth checking each model’s cooking capacity to ensure it’s big enough for you.  

David Rees said, "Depending on the amount of space available in your kitchen, there are compact models that can be placed on top of worktops or built-in models to match fitted kitchens.

"You should also evaluate the door size of the microwave, as this will affect how easy it is to remove hot food from within the appliance. You will also need to consider the clearance space the microwave will need, which is the space required above and behind the appliance for sufficient ventilation. This is usually at least 15cm, but is particularly important if you have a combination microwave as they can expel a lot of air with certain functions."

Presets

While basic models have nothing more than a timer, more upmarket appliances add preset cooking modes for specific food types – such as baked potatoes, pizza, or different types of meat. Other models add shortcut buttons for specific cooking times, such as 60 seconds or several minutes so that you can start the cooking process with a single button press.  

Cooking modes

More expensive appliances often add convection, air frying, and steam cooking modes to the standard microwave cooking. Moreover, these models can often combine multiple cooking methods to cook a wider variety of dishes and reduce cooking times without compromising quality. 

"Look through the microwave model’s available features, such as sensor cooking, convection functions, and preset programs," David Miloshev said. "This will help you simplify your meal preparation.

"Solo microwaves usually include features such as re-heating food, making milk, tea, and coffee, cooking rice, noodles, and pasta, making popcorn, and defrosting. Grill microwaves have all these features except popcorn, plus features for making pizza and toasting. Convection ovens offer all these features, plus features for making brownies, cakes, and bread."

Safety features

Safety is paramount in any kitchen, so appliances with child locks add peace of mind. These are especially important for countertop or built-in models, which are sometimes installed below countertop height—anywhere a microwave’s controls are within reach of curious little fingers.  

Sensor cooking

There’s nothing worse than overcooking your food, so more upmarket microwave appliances often add sensor cooking features to their specifications. These appliances use steam sensors to detect when items are losing too much moisture, which might indicate that the food is drying out or at risk of burning. This means you can simply activate the sensor cooking mode for the food you’re cooking and relax, knowing that the microwave will automatically stop the cooking process once it’s cooked thoroughly. 

Mute function

Not everyone appreciates their appliances beeping aggressively after every use, so it's worth checking whether your prospective appliance allows you to disable audible alerts completely. It's heavy but easy to set up. The SmartThings app makes cooking notifications easy, but the voice control setup isn't straightforward. Our reviewer, Alex, wasn't sure about power convection versus convection cooking because the instruction manual didn't explain it well.

The Samsung 1.2 cu. ft. countertop microwave surprised Alex with its size. It didn't fit on her microwave stand, so she had to put it on her breakfast table. While the interior is spacious, the exterior is bulky, like a wall-mounted microwave. The sleek black design features a 39-inch power cord and a door that pulls down like an oven. There are eight glass touch controls, including presets and a dial to guide you. The ceramic enamel interior includes a 15-inch glass turntable and convection cooking accessories.

Alex tested the Samsung 1.2 cu. ft. The countertop microwave with power convection has various cooking modes, such as microwave, air fry, grill, and convection. The microwave runs at 900W, while grilling and convection reach 1600W and 1650W, respectively. She tested each option, starting with Keep Warm and Defrost.

It was good at air frying but took longer than Alex's air fryer. The grill function made juicy, moist chicken legs but didn't have the distinct flavor of an outdoor grill. She liked the Convection mode because it cooked biscuits faster than an oven, and Grill Combi offers baking options.

Even though it's an efficient alternative to a grill, some functions require experimentation.

Although the unique control panel can be challenging to navigate, it cooks food evenly. Our reviewer, Angie, cooked potatoes and pizza rolls with only an 8-degree variance in temperature. The recommended cooking times printed inside the door are helpful even though there aren't a lot of preset options. The Auto Reheat and Auto Cook function is really cool, but you have to get used to it. Despite sometimes overcooking certain foods, like popcorn, it's a good user experience.

It's hard to use the microwave's control panel at first because it has horizontal buttons and a dial. Compared to typical models with preset buttons, it may take some time to figure out how to use the interface. Once you get used to it, though, it's pretty powerful. You can use features like Turbo Inverter Defrosting and Keep Warm when cooking. It was inconvenient that there were only a few preset buttons, but the Quick Minute button and More/Less popcorn options helped.

Its compact design fits neatly on the countertop without overwhelming the space, and the stylish stainless steel finish adds a modern touch to any kitchen décor.

The best large capacity microwave

The LG NeoChef impressed our reviewer, Marah, especially when it came to heating efficiency and cooking consistency. Although the control panel could be improved, she appreciated its spacious interior and quick results.

The LG NeoChef heated food so efficiently that Marah noticed it right away. When she microwaved her soup for just 2 minutes, it came out scalding hot, even baking on the sides! This feature was a blessing when she was in a hurry or reheating leftovers for her kids. It always came out evenly heated and ready to eat. It did take some adjustment, though, especially if you've used a less powerful one before.

Marah loves that the LG NeoChef cooks her food in the expected time frame, so meal prep is stress-free. Using the sensor reheat setting, she heated leftover lasagna in just over a minute and a half. She had to be careful, though, since it could overcook.

While using the LG NeoChef's control panel was generally easy, Marah found it frustrating. The flat button design made navigation simple, with options for popcorn, sensor cook, and defrost. There were times, though, when she could not open the door quickly because the button was finicky. The sensor cook feature was okay, but she wished there were more preset options. It required a precise touch, which was annoying when you're multitasking in the kitchen.

With a two-cubic-foot capacity, the NeoChef fits a lot of dishes. Marah could fit mixing bowls and multiple plates inside without worrying about space issues, which was a big plus for her family. She chose an all-black microwave, so it dominated the counter. Nevertheless, she appreciated the generous interior, which allowed her to reheat large platters or several items at the same time.

With 700 watts, the Cuisinart CMW-70 microwave oven heats evenly and efficiently. Auto-cooking functions are nice, but sometimes you have to adjust cooking times. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller spaces. The control panel layout can be a bit confusing, but the magnetron function ensures consistent heating.

After a week of testing, Alex Temblador found that the CMW-70 heated food evenly, despite its low wattage. She uses the auto-cook feature to soften butter, cook popcorn, and melt chocolate. The Soften/Melt setting is great for baking since it doesn't overheat the chocolate or butter.

Alex adjusted the microwave's timing for certain tasks, like popcorn, to avoid overcooking. Overall, the microwave worked well but needed some adaptation due to its unique control setup.

She liked the Express Cook option but noted that she had to press "Cook Time" first before setting manual times.

The control panel is located on the right side, and features preprogrammed touchpads for easy access to auto-cook settings for options like pizza and vegetables. Alex found it cumbersome to press "Cook Time" before entering the cooking time. The “Add Time” button makes it easy to add time increments. Even though the memory function saves frequently used settings, Alex didn't really use it. The panel's layout could be better, but it offers several good options.

Despite its 700 watts, the Cuisinart CMW-70's magnetron function works well as a compact microwave. Although it doesn't have as much power as a higher-wattage microwave, it handles basic things like defrosting and reheating well. With the Inverter Turbo Defrost feature, Alex defrosted food without partially cooking it.

Those with limited counter space will appreciate the Cuisinart CMW-70 Microwave Oven for its size and utility. At 0.7 cubic feet, it fits perfectly in small kitchens or apartments without sacrificing functionality. It is designed for standard plates and bowls, but tall cups and larger dishes can be tricky to fit.

How to choose the best microwave for you

Before buying a new microwave, consider size, wattage, power levels, safety, smart features, and budget.

Size: Wright says, “A standard-sized microwave is usually 1.5 to 2 cubic feet. To pick the capacity you'll need, measure the size of any bakeware you plan to use in it and make sure it fits.”

Wattage: “You'll want a microwave that's around 700 - 1,000 watts because most microwaves use that as a basis for cooking time. If you go over or under, your food will more often be undercooked or overcooked, respectively.”

Power level: Also, consider power levels – m"st freestanding (also known as solo) microwaves let you adjust this to suit different foods, as you don’t want to cook everything at full power. Higher don't work best for liquids, including soups, drinks, or veggies. Medium power is ideal for ready-made meals, while low power is better for delicate jobs like melting chocolate or butter. Many of the best microwaves offer reheating and defrosting modes, too.

Smart and safety features: Newer models have microwave inverter technology, which uses a continuous stream of heat at reduced power to cook foods more evenly than traditional pulsing microwaves. Other smart features include voice-activated controls and barcode scanning (via an app) to activate an auto-cook time. Investing in a microwave with a clear view door will mean you don’t need to keep opening it to check on the food. Some have a child lock function that disables the control panel, preventing children from accidentally starting the kitchen appliance unsupervised.

Budget: Wright recommends spending between $200 - $350 for a microwave. Expect to pay more for smart features and microwaves, including additional cooking methods like grilling and baking.

Are microwaves safe?

Yes – microwaves are very safe if you follow the manufacturer's instructions. People have expressed concerns over the years regarding radiation, but microwaves use low-frequency electromagnetic radiation. This is the same kind of radiation used in radio and lightbulbs. These waves are contained within the microwave, too. It is a different kind of radiation from X-rays, which uses ionizing radiation to detach electrons from atoms.

It also depends on the type of plastic you use to heat your food; avoid using anything that changes shape or melts, and don’t put anything metallic or foil in the microwave. Always ensure that the food is thoroughly heated through and piping hot in the middle to avoid food poisoning.

When is the best time to buy a microwave?

The best time to get a microwave deal is during a big sale. Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, which happen in summer, October, and late November, offer huge discounts on electronics, including microwaves. It's a great time to find a bargain because retailers often slash prices to get customers to shop around the holidays. It's also a good time to shop around Christmas and New Year.

Manufacturers usually release new microwave models in the spring and fall. As new models hit the shelves, older models usually get a price cut. You can get a high-quality compact microwave for a great price, especially if you don't care about the latest features.

These days, there are plenty of the best microwaves festooning shelves from Costco to the corner drugstore. It’s an embarrassment of riches in some ways: no matter your counter size, color preference, or feature request, there’s a microwave out there for you. 

Regarding workhorse microwaves, the LG LMC2075ST NeoChef countertop microwave gets the job done. At two cubic feet, it’s big enough to reheat a casserole in one go but too big for any limited counter space. It’s easy to clean and powerful, but it offers limited sensor cook and reheat settings. The buttons can also be fidgety and presets aren’t always intuitive.

Overall, the LMC2075ST is a perfectly fine microwave if you’re just looking for a workhorse to get the job done, but if you’re looking for something next level, you might want to go elsewhere.

LG LMC2075ST: Price & availability

The NeoChef LMC2075ST retails for $279 on the LG site. Looking at other microwaves on the Best Buy site, that appears to be just about the median price for ovens that measure 2 cubic feet or more, with prices ranging from $166.79 for a Galanz ExpressWave to $1049 for a stainless steel Viking microwave. Most brands that are comparable to LG are pricing their ovens around $250, and many of the features seem to be fairly similar. 

You can buy the NeoChef LMC2075ST at any number of online retailers, including Best Buy, Home Depot, Macy’s, and Amazon. 

LG LMC2075ST: Setup

The NeoChef comes packed tightly into a fairly large cardboard box, weighing around 44 pounds. You’ll need a buddy to help you get it out of the box, and even then, it can be a challenge: We eventually just had to cut down one of the sides of the box to get ours out, even with the help of a spouse. 

The setup is fairly easy. The microwave’s glass tray is set at the top of the box, and once you have the unit out and plugged in, you can just open it, throw down the turntable base and tray, and you’re good to go. Most packaging material seems recyclable. Save the plastic bag holding the microwave’s manual.

LG LMC2075ST: Design

From the instant the LG LMC2075ST NeoChef comes out of the box, it has a presence. At two cubic feet, it’s a seemingly enormous microwave and one that, when purchased in all black, can suck the light out of any airy counter space. It comes across as a sort of appliance monolith with a flat black face and sides. Luckily, the microwave does come in multiple color options, so buyers can choose from black, white, stainless steel, and black stainless steel, meaning you can customize your choice to some degree. 

The microwave’s button panel is flat and seems fairly straightforward. There are buttons for setting the clock and cook duration, as well as “sensor reheat,” “sensor cook,” “popcorn,” and “defrost” buttons. The on-off buttons are clearly labeled, and the microwave’s door opens when you push the button below the keypad.

That button, however, can be a bit iffy. To get the door quickly, you have to hit the button in the right spot—on the left side, ideally—lest the button slightly compress and then bounce back. It can be annoying, especially if you’re zooming around your kitchen doing other things and then have to stop and make a concerted effort to get into your microwave.

The LG LMC2075ST NeoChef comes with fairly standard microwave options, and while it’s great that microwaves these days have a “popcorn” button, we were left wanting a bit more. The “sensor cook” button has just six presets—bacon, fresh vegetables, frozen entree, frozen vegetable, oatmeal, potato, and rice—while the “sensor reheat” mode offers just five: beverage, casserole, dinner plate, pie, and pizza. (Honest question: Who reheats pie that much? And what kind of pie? Apple? Are there other kinds of pies you’d want to reheat quickly? But we digress). 

The NeoChef has a couple of cool inclusions, though, including a hexagonal turntable base, which is easy to install and less prone to tilt than a traditional triangle base. We also liked the oven’s EasyClean interior, which was wiped right off with a slightly damp paper towel swipe. Full disclosure: We didn’t test out how the EasyClean would do versus months and months and months of baked-on “college apartment” style grime, but as long as you stay on top of your grease and spills, you should be okay.

LG LMC2075ST: Performance

In general, the NeoChef is a fairly powerful microwave, even compared to other units with similar wattage. We’re not sure why—1200 watts should be the same across units—but when we put in a bowl of soup to cook for two minutes on the NeoChef, it came out absolutely scalding and even baked onto the sides of the bowl at points. 

It’s a great attribute to have if you’re always running behind or have hungry kids—we’d reheat our kid's leftovers for about a minute and always found them perfectly done and ready for little mouths—but it can take a bit to get used to, especially if you’re coming from a less powerful unit. The unit’s defrost setting is similarly powerful, meaning you should probably keep an eye on whatever you’re un-freezing, lest you begin to cook it instead.

We tested the microwave’s sensor reheat setting a few times and always found it perfectly serviceable, if a bit strong. When we put a container of leftover lasagna in and hit the “dinner plate” option, it sizzled and bubbled within about 60 seconds. We pulled it at 90 and found it good to eat, but we’ll note that if we hadn’t been there, the sensor would have kept cooking the leftovers for an additional 90 seconds.

If you like reheating large platters, you’re in luck. The LG LMC2075ST NeoChef is huge. We could put at least four full coffee pots inside on the turntable, though we didn’t test whether reheating them would be as impressive.

There were a couple other things about the LMC2075ST that we weren’t too sold on. First, The door’s opening and closing sounds deafening. It’s fine if you close it softly, but if you have a kid who likes to slam appliance doors closed and walk away, you’ll be shocked by how noisy the NeoChef can be. Perhaps it’s the largeness of the inside creating a sort of sonic echo chamber, but it’s loud.

Also, this is a nitpick, but we wish that the number buttons could correspond to heating times, i.e., hitting the ‘2’ would make the microwave cook for two minutes. Instead, you’ll have to manually type in whatever time you want, which is fine but just takes a few more button pushes. The “start” button does have the 30-second option, which is nice, just in case you’re looking to give something a short blast or want to take that plate of leftovers over the top, heat-wise.

LG LMC2075ST: Care & maintenance

As previously mentioned, the LG LMC2075ST NeoChef is a snap to clean. Its EasyClean surfaces wipe right off, and because the microwave’s front button panel is all one piece, too, you don’t have to worry about digging crud out of little insets. 

The microwave manual also includes cleaning instructions detailing how to clean the interior, exterior, control panel, and accessories. Abrasive cleaners, steel wool, gritty washcloths, and some paper towels should be avoided lest they harm the oven’s surfaces.

LG LMC2075ST: User reviews

Users online seem to think the LG LMC2075ST NeoChef is a solid buy. Amazon users give it 4.2 stars out of 5 with over 160 reviews, and Best Buy customers give it a 4.5-star rating with over 5,000 reviews.

One five-star Amazon reviewer hailed the NeoChef’s alarm tune, which sounds when your cooking cycle is over. As they explain, “It is a little tune but quieter than a loud BEEP BEEP BEEP." Other reviewers agree that the microwave is powerful, with one five-star Best Buy customer writing, “Heated up several items, ramen soup, pulled pork, soup, potatoes, and each one was heated thru evenly. Zero cold spots…My son cooked ramen soup. As with our old microwave, he set the cooking time to 3 minutes. He noticed it was boiling at the 2-minute mark and removed the bowl. He said they were done.” 

Some reviewers also say the NeoChef can be a cheaper alternative to a built-in microwave, citing how the unit fits with some trim kits. We can’t vouch for this, given the manual’s stated guidelines for how much clearance you’d need on the top and sides of the oven lest you start a fire, but if you can give it the room, maybe it could work.

LG LMC2075ST: Expert advice

Sandy Cook, a salesperson at Pasadena Kitchens in Southern California, says that larger-scale microwaves like this one are mainly meant for people who aim to do a lot of cooking in their small appliances. Cook said the perks of the NeoChef LMC2075ST include the hexagonal ring, which she says allows you to put heavier and taller items on the turntable, as well as the microwave’s interior LED lighting, which she says makes the inside much easier to see at night or in the dark. 

These days, Cook says, buyers should expect a good microwave to last “at least ten years.” That’s assuming buyers clean their ovens, use them gently, and give them proper clearance. “Everything is built to last at least ten years,” says Cook, “but sometimes that doesn’t happen.” 

Would I buy the LG LMC2075ST?

If your old microwave broke and you’re in the market for something for all your most basic microwave needs, the LG LMC2075ST NeoChef is a solid choice. If you’re looking to upgrade your microwave game, though, or want a unit that does more than just reheat food and zap oatmeal, then you might want to consider upgrading to a combination microwave/air fryer/convection oven, which does seem like it could be the kitchen wave of the future. 

Overall, we found the NeoChef to be a perfectly adequate microwave. We liked its size and how easy it was to clean, but we were irked by little details, like the loud door, the wonky button, and the lack of quick-cooking buttons.

With microwave, air fryer, and convection oven capabilities, the Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 aims to reduce the small appliance clutter that plagues many kitchens. 

This oven sets out to do everything from reheating soup to roasting a chicken, melting chocolate to crisping up a three-day-old slice of pizza. The company says that capacity is due to the oven’s “Element iQ system,” which it says “steers power to where and when it’s needed” to create “the ideal cooking environment.”

We snagged a Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 to test those claims and conducted a rigorous round of real-world tests over about a month. We used it to bake Christmas cookies and roast chicken wings, testing its presets and various capacities against our expectations and the fairly standard microwave and toaster ovens we already owned.

Breville BMO870BSS1BUC1: Price & availability

The Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 has a list price of $499.95, putting it on the higher end of the price spectrum than other combination ovens. (Toshiba, for instance, makes a slightly smaller oven that costs just $229, while Panasonic’s 4-in-1 oven costs $529.) 

While $500 might seem steep for a small appliance, we found it fairly worthwhile, both because of the Breville Combi Wave’s general quality and capacity to replace other appliances. If you snag one of these, you can toss your microwave and air fryer. If you’re looking for a full suite of countertop friends, Amazon bundles the Combi Wave with a 4-slice Breville toaster for just about $570.

Breville BMO870BSS1BUC1: Setup

The Breville Combi 3-in-1 comes in a well-sized box with limited packing materials. The materials are mostly cardboard, too, meaning they’re easily recyclable. Unboxing the Breville Combi 3-in-1 isn’t hard, either, provided you have an extra set of hands to pull on the box while you yank on the oven. 

Once the oven is out of the box, you’ll just need to unwrap the electrical cord, pull the plastic off the end of the three-prong plug, and you’re good to go. The machine’s accessory trays are wrapped separately, too, so assembly is incredibly easy. You’ll have your new oven up and running in minutes.

Breville BMO870BSS1BUC1: Design

Sleek, sturdy, and well-made, the Combi Wave satisfied all our wants in terms of durability and appearance. Made of stainless steel, the Combi Wave comes in both brushed and black stainless steel and has a hefty door handle that makes the whole appliance feel relatively substantial. That doesn’t mean it’s loud, though: The door has soft close technology that means you won’t find yourself always wincing when you slam the opening shut. 

We were particularly taken with the digital readout, which is fairly large for the machine’s size and is very easy to read. We also liked the machine’s two knobs—One for time and one to adjust temperature or microwave power—both of which feel great in your hand and allow you to make easy selections no matter what you’re cooking.

In terms of aesthetics, we’d be remiss if we didn’t shout out the Combi Wave’s pleasing cycle-end music, which is far superior to the obnoxiously loud beeps other comparable appliances can make...

Since the Combi Wave aims to do the work of three different appliances, there are features a-plenty. The oven comes with both a circular metal baking or roasting pan (with folding legs) as well as a raised roasting trivet. 

Depending on what you’re looking to do—say, roast some chicken using one of the machine’s presets—the oven’s digital display will tell you what pan or rack you should use and how long the oven’s preheat will be. If you’re in doubt—say you’re not using a preset, for instance—the oven also gives general guidance if you’re baking versus microwaving or whatever.

The oven has two previously mentioned knobs—time and adjust—the centers of which contain the machine’s “stop” and “start” buttons. There are also buttons on the front to choose “fast combi,” “oven,” “microwave,” “air fry,” or “from frozen” cooking, as well as a button for the “food menu” where you’ll find many of the machine's presets. The latter is a great place to start if you’re looking to reheat something, figure out the length of time you’ll want to cook a certain amount of salmon, say, or just whip up a quick bag of microwave popcorn.

Inside the machine’s door, there are even more preset and settings buttons, including two, meant to make melting chocolate or butter incredibly easy (trust us—we used them multiple times around the holidays). There’s also a child lock option, a “heart” button to make a cook setting a favorite, and options to change the machine’s sound cues and make them louder or softer.

Breville BMO870BSS1BUC1: Performance

We put the Combi Wave through a few standard tests meant to measure the oven’s performance against other comparable models. First, we microwaved a dinner-sized bowl of tomato soup for about two minutes at the highest setting. The soup—and the bowl—came out piping hot, so much so that the next time we made soup, we dialed back the time just a touch. 

Next, we tested the oven’s convection function on both a dish of chicken legs. We let the machine’s “chicken” preset do all the guesswork and simply entered the meat’s weight to let the oven gauge the cooking time. The legs came out perfectly done, with crispy skin on the outside, and the entire process was incredibly easy. Best of all, the oven even turned itself off when the cooking was done, meaning we wouldn’t wake up hours later in the middle of the night wondering if we’d turned the oven off after dinner. Things went comparably well with a couple of salmon filets, as well, which took just nine minutes to cook and came out perfectly done.

We also made handy use of a couple of the oven’s other presets, like the popcorn feature, the chocolate and butter melting (which is more handy than you’d think!), and the “pizza” setting, which reheated a couple of delivery slices to a perfect crispness. We baked a few pans of brownies that came out well, too and found that the oven left the edges perfectly crispy.

As far as performance, we only had a few drawbacks. First, if you’ve never had a convection oven or air fryer, you might find it a little hard to get used to the whooshing air sound that comes with the cooking process. It’ll turn into background noise after a couple of bakes, and at only about 56 dB, it’s less noisy than your average dishwasher, but still, it’s louder than a traditional oven. The “done” music is also fully adjustable, so you can set that to be as loud or as quiet as you’d like.

Secondly, while the Combi Wave is pretty big (We tested ours in a mid-century ranch house with a galley-like kitchen, and it took up a shocking chunk of our counter space), it’s still not big enough to cook two things at once, meaning you won’t be able to, say, throw a chicken on the top rack. At the same time, you heat a tray of fries down below. This oven only has one cooking surface, meaning you’ll have to pick and choose how and what you want to cook at any given time.

One note about that counter space issue while we’re thinking about it: While we thought the Combi Wave felt pretty large in our home kitchen, almost no buyers online seem to have that issue, and most say it fits perfectly in their more modern spaces. Our advice is to just measure first and make sure you have a sense of how big the oven will be compared to your room.

Breville BMO870BSS1BUC1: Care & maintenance

 We found the Combi Wave to be pretty easy to clean, with the accompanying pan and rack wiping down to appear basically new no matter what we threw at them. Because the inside of the oven is shiny stainless, it’s easy to see where the messes are, too, so as long as you stay on top of any splatter or crust and don’t let it build up for months or years. You shouldn’t have to resort to anything more than a little hot water and elbow grease. 

Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1: User reviews

At the time of writing, the Combi Wave currently has a 4.4-star rating on Amazon with 424 reviews. It has a 4.5 on Best Buy with 461 reviews, too, meaning users are relatively consistent in what they think about the product. 

One Amazon buyer wrote in their review, “I've used this now for about two months, and I've just started scratching the surface about what it can do. The longer I own it, the more I like and respect it,” while another called out the buttons and dials, which they called “so intuitive and easy to use.” A Best Buy customer agreed, hailing the “large” and “bright” LCD panel, which they said “contains all of the information needed during any cooking task.” 

Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1: Expert advice

Rick Biederbeck, owner of the Spencer’s TV And Appliance chain in Arizona, says a combination oven is a smart purchase not just because it eliminates counter clutter but because it’s probably well made. “Most of the inexpensive brands don’t offer the things that you can get in a combination oven,” Biederbeck says. “When you’re looking at something that gives you more options, it’s probably from a higher-end brand, and part of their process is to build for quality so you have an assurance that it’ll last a long time.” 

Biederbeck estimates that an oven like the Breville should last somewhere between 15 and 20 years, depending on how often you use it and how roughly you treat it. “If you’re using something twice a week for 15 years, even if it costs twice as much, to me, it’s worth it,” he says. 

Though Biederbeck isn’t familiar with the Combi Wave, he says it’s in line with other ovens in the marketplace, all created in the wake of the public’s love affair with air frying. Now, he says, there are even ovens that have 4-in-1 capabilities, like this Samsung model, which can also steam cook and sous vide food. “They’re handier at home and make for fewer things to keep in the cupboard or pantry,” Biederbeck says, “I have that Samsung at my house, and I use that steam feature at least twice a week.” 

Would I buy the Breville BMO870BSS1BUC1?

While the Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 is certainly a splurge, the oven’s range of use and sturdy durability make it a smart buy. It passed every test we put it to with flying colors, and we really left our reviewing process with only minor quibbles.

The Farberware FMO07ABTBKA was not perfect in our tests, but it was quite good, and the price was nice. We found it for less than $70 on some sites. At only 0.7 cubic feet, this is tied for being the best compact microwave we tested. Things did seem a little tight on some tests, but if you just use your microwave to heat up individual portions, it will work fine. This might not be the best if you prepare large family meals in the microwave.

The FMO07ABTBKA tied for second-best on the potato test. It produced a thoroughly-cooked finished potato and it did that when using the Potato button. That was not the case with some microwaves, which produced uneven results when using their Potato option. This one struggled quite a bit with popcorn. It had almost the most unpopped kernels at the end. It did much better on the second round, though, popping more of the bag and producing no overdone spots.

The results were not stellar when we tested heat consistency with pizza rolls. The pizza rolls on one side of its tray were about 15 degrees hotter than on the other. That's not great, but some microwaves did much worse – some with more than a 50-degree difference from one side of the tray to the other.

There is a decent selection of cooking options with the FMO07ABTBKA. You get presets for popcorn, potato, pizza, frozen vegetables, beverages, and dinner plates. You can also use the six express options and cook for between one and six minutes with the touch of one button. This is not one of the microwaves that will sense the moisture levels and adjust cooking times automatically, but it does have a memory button for saving often-used settings. For instance, if you often cook something at 80% power for 2 minutes and 10 seconds, you can avoid inputting those time and power level settings every time. You can save that setting and push one button.

Aside from the cooking options you can defrost by time or by weight with this microwave. A keypad lock will keep the kids from accessing any of the features.

This microwave is lackluster in terms of its warranty. There is just one year of coverage on all parts. That is not as impressive as the ones that guarantee at least their magnetrons for more time. Since this one represents less of an investment overall, that is a little less troubling.

The FMO07ABTBKA has just 700 watts and that is the lowest of all the ones we tested. It really wasn't noticeable during our testing, or at least we couldn't directly connect a weaker performance to the lower wattage. Other microwaves of the same wattage had their own unique scores for everything and they outscored the units with more watts on some tasks. That’s not to say that you may desire a more powerful microwave during some cooking tasks.

The Farberware FMO07ABTBKA ties for the smallest size and lowest wattage of all the microwaves we compared. It has a very small pricetag to match, and we found it to be competitive, even if not perfect, during our testing. It cooked our test food thoroughly and evenly for the most part. If you plan to use your microwave for preparing large quantities of food, this is not the best option, but it will heat up individual portions fine and for less than $70.

The GE JES1145SHSS packs powerful performance into its small size, making it one of the best microwaves you can buy in our eyes. It's been on the market long enough that we've tested it twice, and it was still great on the second go-around; the only major downside here would be the price.

Like most microwaves today, this GE compact microwave includes popcorn, pizza, and potato buttons. However, it is missing a sensor reheat button, so you must guess when your leftovers need and monitor your food to ensure it doesn't overcook.

In addition to these standard presets the GE includes buttons for a beverage, a dinner plate, and a frozen vegetable. This gives you a good variety, though some other microwaves include even more food settings, such as ones for fresh vegetables and frozen entrees.

Although the GE microwave is smaller than the two roomiest microwaves in our lineup, it can still comfortably fit a big mixing bowl, a tall glass, or a standard dinner plate.

This GE compact microwave only has a standard warranty of one year to protect your purchase. If your microwave has defective parts, including the magnetron, you can send it back to GE for a free repair or replacement; other units offer more coverage.

The price seems high, especially considering the small size and low wattage, but the GE JES1145SHSS outperformed some of its bigger and more powerful competitors in some tests. Although it's missing the convenience of sensor reheating and some presets, it includes enough buttons to help you cook efficiently and other features to place it among the best compact microwaves.

As for the actual cooking experience, we felt the GE performed well in every test. It cooks food completely and quickly. It even tied for the best score on popcorn, preparing every kernel to perfection. 

Like the other top-rated countertop microwaves on our list, the GE aced the first test with its ability to quickly and thoroughly cook a frozen macaroni and cheese meal. We followed the directions on the back of the box and cooked it for 3:30 minutes. When it finished cooking, the meal's temperature was 171 Fahrenheit, which is above the recommended minimum temperature of 165 Fahrenheit.

We also cooked a kids' frozen meal with mini corn dogs and other food compartments. After following the instructions on the box, we recorded the temperature of each corn dog. One near the center only registered at 145 F, so we cooked the meal for another 30 seconds, which was plenty of time to bump the temperature of the colder corn dog up to 175 F. 

We also cooked potato in this microwave for six minutes, the average time it takes to cook a standard-sized russet potato in a microwave. It had a few raw spots, but it was still good overall. So, overall, this compact microwave performed better than most of the others we tested.

Would I buy the GE JES1145SHSS?

With its powerful performance and compact size, the GE JES1145SHSS compact microwave impressed us. While it lacks a sensor reheat button and some presets, it has enough buttons for efficient cooking. Despite its higher price, it outperformed larger, more powerful competitors. It cooked food thoroughly and quickly consistently and met recommended temperatures when cooking popcorn and frozen meals.

Although it struggled a little with cooking a russet potato, it outperformed most of the other microwaves we tested. It has a one-year warranty, but you can get free repairs or replacements if it breaks.

The GE JES1072SHSS is exactly what most people would imagine when thinking of a typical countertop microwave. Compact, stylish, and costing less than $100, it's a decent machine, but it isn't quite one of the best compact microwaves on the market. 

The GE JES1072SHSS was only good, not great, in our testing and didn't quite prepare food as well as some of the others we tested. As this unit was tied for the smallest one we tested then, you might want to check our recommendations for the best microwaves to look for a larger countertop microwave.

The GE JES1072SHSS may have been tied for being one of the smallest we tested, but it didn’t have a problem fitting dishes and glasses inside. We put a large dinner plate and glass inside to see if they could reheat, and they did. If you use your microwave to prepare large meals, this might seem too tight.

As for the outside, we think the design is sleek and stylish and will fit nicely into most kitchens if you wish to update your appliance.

All the microwaves we tested were able to prepare food, but the JES1072SHSS just didn't do it as well as some of the others. 

The GE JES1072SHSS did an ok job cooking potatoes, but there were some hard spots here and there. Other microwaves performed better at this task. The same story was true for the consistency tests. There was quite a big difference in temperature from one side of the tray to the other. 

The unit's small size also may have been part of the problem in our popcorn test. The JES1072SHSS left more unpopped kernels than any of the other ones. The rest of the bag looked fine, and we were surprised it could even handle one of the full-sized bags, but other microwaves did a better job of finishing the popcorn.

This one had fewer food-specific buttons than others, but there was a specific popcorn, potato, and beverage button. At the press of one button, you also get express keys for 1 through 6-minute cooking times.

The JES1072SHSS just comes with a standard 1-year warranty on everything, which is not great. There are lots of contenders that offer more coverage.

The GE JES1072SHSS is attractive and truly compact. It might not be the best at cooking evenly, but that probably won't be noticeable on most tasks. It could be the perfect addition to a stylish kitchen update.

Would I buy the GE JES1072SHSS?

The GE JES1072SHSS microwave offers decent heating efficiency but falls short compared to other models. While it effectively reheats large dinner plates and glasses, it struggles with tasks like cooking potatoes and shows inconsistencies in the popcorn test. In the microwave, there are noticeable temperature differences across the tray, which leads to uneven cooking.

The control panel is straightforward, with basic presets and express keys, but it lacks advanced features and food-specific buttons. The Magnetron is good for basic tasks but isn't great for advanced cooking. 

The stainless steel Panasonic NN-SD372SR microwave oven is an attractive appliance that scored very well in our cooking tests, but does it deserve to be called one of the best compact microwaves you can buy? It does come with a Keep Warm function (rare at this price point), and it came in the top four in our performance tests, though its controls are trickier to use than other units. 

As we noted in the intro, the NN-SD372SR's unique look clashes with the fact that the control panel is trickier to master than other microwave ovens. Instead of the preset buttons typically found on compact microwave ovens, there are long, horizontal, rather oddly shaped buttons and a pop-out dial you use to set times or weights. 

The control panel is not a dealbreaker, but there is a learning curve involved, and for some foods, you need to do some guesswork to figure out which setting is best.

This small microwave’s interior is 0.8 cubic feet, which is a reasonably good size. It has a healthy 950-watt power level and can easily hold a 10.5-inch dinner plate and a mixing bowl that measures 11.5 x 6.5 inches. However, this countertop microwave is a tad short inside, and you cannot easily maneuver a 7-inch glass in and out.

The Panasonic NN-SD372SR is one of only a few microwaves in this price range to offer a Keep Warm function. This function uses low-pulsing microwave power to keep foods warm for as long as 30 minutes without continuing to cook them. 

It might have been the best at evenly cooking our test potato, but it was hard to start that process. There is no preset button for potatoes or anything else on this microwave except popcorn. However, it does offer suggested cooking times on the inside of its door frame.

The compact microwave has a child lock, a great safety feature that keeps mischievous kids and unknowing adults from activating it. This microwave also has Auto Reheat, Auto Cook, Power Level, Inverter Turbo Defrost, and Keep Warm buttons. Other buttons include a Quick Minute button for ten extra minutes, a More/Less button for popcorn, and buttons for the Timer/Clock Stop/Reset and Start functions.

In our food tests, the Panasonic NN-SD372SR tied for fourth place overall. Because of its unique design, it looked quite special on our countertop. However, carefully read the instruction manual since the control panel is more complicated than most compact microwaves.

While testing the Panasonic NN-SD372SR, we got mixed results. It produced excellent cooking results for some foods but left cold spots or overheated others. It was the best unit in our potato test, cooking it through without leaving any uneven spots.

It was not perfect on popcorn, but it did a good job of fully popping most if not all, kernels; it left the fewest unpopped kernels out of all the microwaves we tested. However, there were still some burned areas in the final product.

The NN-SD372SR fared well on the consistency tests, with just 8 degrees of temperature difference from one side of the plate of pizza rolls to the other. It also had a fairly even heating pattern when we made a heat map with marshmallows.

Would I buy the Panasonic NN-SD372SR?

Panasonic's NN-SD372SR microwave scores well in both heat efficiency and time consistency. Inverter technology and 950-watt power ensure even cooking and minimal cold spots, so it's a great choice for all kinds of food. In spite of its useful features like Keep Warm and Turbo Inverter Defrost, the control panel and functionality score is just average because of its unconventional design.

A high score goes to the magnetron's 950-watt power delivery and the Keep Warm feature. In terms of size and space, the 0.8 cubic foot interior gives you enough room for small to medium-sized meals but not enough for large meals.

The Toshiba EM925A5aA-BS isn't one of the absolute best compact microwaves you can buy, though it still performed practically perfectly on some of our tests. It struck a good balance between the features offered and its reasonable price. 

The Toshiba EM925A5A-BS was one of the smaller microwaves we tested, but it was not the smallest. When we loaded it up with a relatively large dinner plate and glass, there was plenty of room left.

It also fits a mixing bowl and a large popcorn bag just fine. However, if you want to cook large family dinners, this might not be the best bet.

The Toshiba EM925A5A-BS microwave is not the most powerful we tested; it only has 900 watts of power, but it should still be enough for most tasks. It did just fine on our testing tasks and even impressively had the highest score for heat consistency out of all our units. This meant it heated food evenly from one side of the plate to the other, a nice change from some microwaves that leave cold spots in frozen dinners and other dishes.

This microwave's even cooking was especially evident on the marshmallow test. We melted an even layer across each unit's tray and then purposely burned them slightly to see heating patterns. The marshmallows on the EM925A5A-BS tray were pretty evenly browned all the way across. That was not the case with many competing units – some had brown stripes as a heating pattern and others with brown concentric circles.

This one was average on our popcorn-popping test in most ways. It left about 6 grams unpopped, which is not bad. There were no burned spots, which was pretty rare during our testing. The potato we microwaved also came out almost perfect using the potato button. Overall, it scored well cooking different types of food.

The EM925A5A-BS offers a nice assortment of presets and power levels, including popcorn, potato, pizza, frozen vegetable, beverages, and dinner plate buttons. A longer warranty would add to the value of this microwave, though it is not surprising that one at this price point has just one year of coverage on everything.

The Toshiba EM925A5A-BS did a nice job on our tests. It was especially good at maintaining the same heat levels across its cooking surface, and at its price point, we think it could be a worthwhile addition to your kitchen.
