Step by step guide: How to store Christmas lights

1. Take down your lights safely and remove any knots or tangles

It’s essential to turn off any lights and unplug them before you start to take them down. This will help to prevent the risk of electric shock as you untangle them and make it easy to manipulate the wires.

Starting at the top of the tree is the safest way to remove your lights, keeping the tree's weight even and preventing lights from falling and becoming tangled in the lower strands. Work slowly and methodically as you unwind, removing tangles as you take down the lights.

If your lights are particularly knotty, spread them out on the floor once you’ve taken them down. From the plug end, carefully work the plug in and out of any tangles until no knots are left. Now, you can choose one or more of our storage methods.

2. Wrap the lights around a cardboard tube or rectangle

The easiest method of all, and the one we choose in our home, year after year, is the DIY cardboard rectangle or tube. Simply cut out a cardboard rectangle (you probably have a lot in your home after Christmas gifting), and snip small notches into either end of the longer sides. Start with one end of your lights, wrap them around the cardboard, and secure the strands in the notches. Then, slowly and methodically, wrap the lights around the cardboard in even rows, securing the end of the lights in the notch at the other end.

“Making notches on the edges of the card will keep your cable neatly in place,” says Ryan McDonough, interior design expert at MyJobQuote. “Just make sure you untwist the wires as you go to prevent straining and breakages.” You can also use duct tape (available at Amazon) to secure the lights at either end.

A cardboard tube, such as a wrapping paper tube, can be used in the same way. Snip a notch in the top of the tube to secure the first strand, then neatly wind the lights around the tube.

One important tip is to use a long enough tube or large enough piece of card so that you don’t have to overlap your coils of wires. It will make them much easier to unwrap next year.

3. Wrap the lights around an old clothes hanger

We love this idea for storing and hanging Christmas lights in a wardrobe or storage rack. Take an old clothes hanger with wide notches or dips on either side. These help secure the strands at either end, or you can use duct tape. Then, wrap the lights vertically, moving from left to right. Once you’ve wrapped up the entire length of the lights, you can loop the plug around the neck and hang your lights up in a closet or storage area.

4. Use a hose reel or extension cord reel to wind up the lights

If you have a hose or power cord reel handy, these can provide a great storage solution and keep your lights tangle-free. Pop one end of your lights into the spool notch, then wind up your lights slowly and gently, ensuring the spools are even. If you’re using an extension cord reel, simply plug your lights into the socket to secure the other end.

5. Use your forearm and wrap the lights from hand to elbow

A popular and simple method used by many. Once you’ve untangled your lights, use the length of your forearm to create a simple spool, wrapping the lengths from hand to elbow. When fully coiled up, use a zip tie to secure the lights in the centre of the loop.

6. Use a dining chair to create a figure of eight

A genius way to create an organized bundle of lights. Overturn a dining chair so the legs point upwards, then slowly loop your lights around two legs to create a figure-of-eight pattern. Make sure you don't wrap them too tightly, or you’ll have a problem sliding them off again. Continue until you have two feet of wire left, then slip the lights off the chair and wrap the remaining wire around the centre of the figure of eight to secure the bundle.

7. Use a ready-made storage solution

There are lots of storage solutions available at hardware stores and online for Christmas light storage, from ready-made cable reels and spools to pre-cut plastic rectangles and padded boxes. One of our favorites is the Zober Christmas Lights Storage box (Amazon), which can hold up to 800 bulbs at a time while protecting them from dust and damage. A cheaper but no less effective option is the Woods Cordstor (Amazon), which costs just a couple of dollars.

8. Protect lights using tissue paper, newspaper or bubble wrap

Now you’ve wrapped up your lights, it’s essential to protect delicate bulbs and wiring from any damage. Wrap the lights in tissue paper, newspaper or bubble wrap. This will protect the lights and keep them free from dust over the next 11 months or so.

Whichever way you coil, loop, tie or wind your lights, it’s essential to store them correctly, says McDonough. “To protect them, place them in a lidded storage box and store them somewhere cool and dry, such as a cupboard, attic or dry basement.” Label them clearly to know which lights are for your tree, garden or roof.

Can you store Christmas lights in a shed or garage?

“It’s fine to store Christmas lights in a garage as long as it’s dry,” says McDonough. Just be sure to protect them from rodent damage with a lidded storage box - mice like to chew through wires - and check on them throughout the year. It may be best to hang them up in the garage to reduce the possibility of damage from moisture or pests on the ground.

McDonough advises against keeping your Christmas lights in a shed though. “Sheds are usually unheated and uninsulated, so, they can be subject to moisture. They can also get very cold during the winter and hot in the summer throughout the year, so they’re not always ideal for storing Christmas lights.”

How many years can you keep Christmas lights?

How long your Christmas lights last will depend on their quality, how often you use them, and how well they are stored. However, you should expect to get at least a decade of use out of good quality modern LED lights. In fact, many LED light suppliers say their lights can shine for around 100,000 hours. Using your lights for four weeks continuously every Christmas gives you around 148 years of use!

Make sure you inspect your lights every year, before and after storing, to ensure they are undamaged and that no bulbs need replacing. This will help to maximize their lifespan.

How often should you buy new Christmas lights?

It depends, according to McDonough. “If your lights are the old filament or incandescent type, they’re prone to overheating, so you’re best off replacing them. Even though LED lights cost more upfront, they will last far longer and are much cheaper per hour to run.”

As a general rule of thumb, LED lights need replacing every 10-15 years while incandescent lights need replacing every 4-6 years.

Alternatively, strip off the needles and use them as a mulch for acid-loving plants. Think heathers, rhododendrons and azaleas.

Don't throw out your Christmas tree just yet! There are several surprising ways to reuse your Christmas tree after it has served its original festive purpose. My favorite way to reuse the tree is to make a healthy and delicious drink out of the needles. The needles can be gathered after Christmas and can be consumed as tea to help treat colds & flu, but it's also a tasty drink in its own right.

As someone who is actively trying to practice a "zero waste" lifestyle, I was curious about any possible ways of repurposing my Christmas tree after the holidays are over. To my surprise, I found many ways to reuse the pine needles from spruce and fir trees - it turns out they can be used for everything from tea to fire starters, and the branches can be composted or mulched for my garden.

I am always looking to learn something new, so researching the various varieties of pine trees and their uses was really interesting. I know that harvesting and preparing my pine needles to be used throughout the year will also be a great way to occupy my time as well.

Excited to try fresh pine needle tea, I harvested some from the base of my tree (so as not to ruin the look) and started brewing a fresh pot. I originally wondered how the tea would taste, assuming that it would taste bitter or chemically. However, I found that the taste was mellow and floral, and can be enhanced with honey for a little extra sweetness. I was happy to be able to use basic equipment that I had at home, needing only some scissors, a pot for boiling and my regular electric cooktop.

Why you should try pine needle tea

Pine needles are high in vitamin C, which is excellent for treating colds and flu during the cold winter. It also cuts down on waste and tastes great (in our opinion). Dried pine needles also have a very long shelf life, as they can be stored in jars or food storage boxes in the cupboard without spoiling.

Pine needles also have many other uses besides tea, so they can always be useful to have. Edible firs (the most common type of Christmas tree) and spruces have a pleasant floral, citrusy taste that can be made into infused syrups and used in bear claws and other pastries.

How to harvest pine needles from your spruce or fir

Pine needles that fall off of your spruce or fir tree throughout the Christmas period are perfectly fine to gather up and use. Simply pick them up, rinse them and spread them out to dry on a tray. They can be air-dried, or put in the oven on low heat if you want to dry them quicker (this will also make your house smell good).

Needles can also be cut off of the tree with scissors - dry ones can sometimes be quite pointy so be careful not to prick your fingers when doing so, you can wear thick gloves to avoid this if you wish.

Not all pine needles are safe to consume

It's important to note that not all pine needles are safe to consume. If your tree is a yew tree, then this should not be consumed as they are poisonous. Yew trees are quite distinct (they have flaky bark and thicker softer pines) and aren't commonly used as Christmas trees. Spruces and firs are usually used for Christmas trees - both of which are perfectly fine to consume. However, if you're unsure on what type of tree you have, we would recommend erring on the side of caution and not consuming its needles.

If you have pets, we would also advise owners to ensure that they don't consume pine needles. Dogs can often vomit from consuming them, as they're not easily digested and the sharp leaves can irritate their stomach.

How to store harvested pine needles

Once your pine needles have been cleaned and dried, they can be stored loose in a jar or a food storage box in your cupboard. If you want them to be prepared for drinking, you can order cheap empty teabags online and prepare them for drinking - simply put a teaspoon of pine needles in an empty teabag and store it in a dry jar. Alternatively, a good tea strainer will also work if you don't fancy the hassle of individually packaging the pine needles in teabags.

Once dried and stored correctly, dried pine needles can last for up to two years. This will give you a good supply of pine needles until next Christmas when you can repeat the process again!

9 other uses for pine needles

Pine needles have lots of other uses besides tea. They can make a room smell nice, and they can also add a unique citrusy flavor and fresh aroma to food. Some of our favorite uses are:

1. Make a disinfectant

Pine needles have a piney, fruity scent that's great for making soaps and disinfectants. Simply mix them in with your favorite soap base or infuse them with a natural disinfectant.

2. Use them as a fire starter

The natural oils in pine needles make them a great all-natural fire starter for barbecues and wood burners. One sprig will be more than enough to get a fire going, and adding small amounts will release a beautiful piney aroma.

3. Make Pine needle vinegar or syrup

Pine needles can also be used to flavor vinegar and syrup. For vinegar, add your pine needles to a mason jar and cover it with Apple Cider vinegar. Leave it to infuse for three to four weeks and you will have a delicious, floral vinegar that is high in vitamin C. It is great with salads or for dipping bread.

For the syrup, there are a couple of methods that you can use. Green pine needles can be covered in brown sugar, and when left in a dark cupboard for around one month it will become an unrefined syrup that needs to be sifted and boiled. The end product has floral, citrusy notes and is delicious when made into icing for cakes and pastries (note that you may need to "burp" the jar every few days). If you don't fancy using this method, then you can also leave pine needles in simple syrup or other syrups such as maple to infuse for around 3 weeks.

4. You can bbq and smoke meats with them

If you want your meat to have a citrusy, herbal infusion then throw a few pine needles on top of your bbq or smoker charcoal before smoking or cooking meat. The end result will be beautifully cooked meat with a subtle herbal, citrusy flavor.

5. Use it to freshen up a room

If you want to freshen up a room, simply boil pine needles with cinnamon sticks in a pot and place the steaming infusion in a room to give it a beautiful, fresh aroma.

6. Make pine needle cookies

Pine needle cookies are delicious, and easy to find online - and paired with a pine needle frosting they are great for Christmas. Our favorite thing to make is maple bars, replacing the maple syrup with pine needle syrup.

When cooked pine needles don't taste pungent or perfumey. They taste citrusy and surprisingly floral. When infused in syrup and made into icing or frosting they add a unique fruity flavor to cakes, cookies and pastries.

7. Put pine needle sachets in your drawers

Pine needle sachets made out of tea bags or cheesecloth can be placed inside your drawers to freshen up your clothes. Simply add a small amount to cheesecloth or inside an empty teabag and place them inside your drawers for a piney freshness.

8. Bath with them

You can put pine needles into a hot bath - it is good for the skin and smells amazing.

9. Make a nutritious mulch for your garden

You can use pine needles to make nutritious mulch for your garden. It can be spread over vegetable patches or flower beds to help keep your plants happy and healthy while also promoting growth.

After a long morning of hard work in the kitchen cooking up Christmas dinner, what could be better than settling down on the sofa for a well-earned rest? However, all of those dirty pots and pans need to be cleaned somehow – and this decidedly un-festive task has to fall to someone every year. Unfortunately, this year the washing up will be my responsibility, so I've been on the search for a great hack to help make it as quick as possible.

While using one of the best dishwashers or the best countertop dishwashers is the ultimate cleaning hack, some dishwashers don't quite have the capacity to deal with the huge amount of washing up that Christmas dinner can produce. Instead, I decided to try out a cleaning hack involving the humble potato. While it's known as a mainstay of any Christmas dinner, it turns out that many people believe it to be a great tool for cleaning up afterwards as well.

It's not just me that will be looking for a cleaning hack this Christmas Day either – new research from LG has discovered that 41% of people see washing up as the least favorable chore on Christmas Day. In fact, one in six people have even pretended to be asleep in front of the TV in order to avoid it (I can't pretend that this hasn't crossed my mind in previous years…).

When idly browsing the internet to find out if there were any ways to make this process a little more fun, I stumbled across a Kitchn article that espoused the benefits of using a raw potato to tackle the washing up. My interest piqued, I decided to give this interesting hack a go – I figured that even if it didn't work, I would at least inject some interest into this decidedly dull Christmas Day chore.

How to use a potato to clean your dishes

So, what is it about a potato that gives it a magic cleaning power? Kitchn's article states that potatoes contain oxalic acid, which is known at being "effective in breaking up rust and other difficult stains".

The writer of the article took a pan with burnt-on spots, misted it with a vinegar solution and sprinkled it with a pinch of salt. They then cut a Russet potato in half and scrubbed the pan with the cut side face down (being careful not to apply too much pressure at first to ensure that salt didn't scratch the coating on the pan).

I decided to try this potato hack on two different surfaces – a non-stick frying pan and a metal baking tray. I wanted to test exactly how powerful a potato's cleaning power was, so I decided to eschew the vinegar solution and simply use salt (for its abrasive cleaning properties).

So, how did it go? To be honest, trying out this cleaning hack actually went better than expected. I was skeptical that I'd get results that were worth going through the extra effort of cutting up and using a potato, but I genuinely think it was able to cut through the grease and burnt-on food quicker than if I just used ordinary dish soap.

Frying pan

I scattered some salt on my frying pan (in hindsight, I do regret this, as I think it might have scratched the non-stick coating) and used the cut side of the potato to gently rub over the burnt-on food.

As you can see by the image below, the potato worked up a good 'lather' on the pan. I found that the burnt-on food was shifting far easier than I initially believed it would and it didn't take long until I thought the pan was ready for a wash. I used some dish soap and a soft cloth to wipe away the grease…

… And I was left with a surprisingly clean pan! You can still see some small spots of burn-on food, but these have been on my pan for quite a while and I don't see them shifting any time soon. I can genuinely say that I think that this potato hack cleaned this pan far better than using my dishwasher would have done.

Metal baking tray

After the success I experienced with the frying pan, I turned my attention to the metal baking tray with burnt-on food. I considered this tray to be trickier than the frying pan, so I was especially curious to see whether our humble potato would conquer it too.

Luckily, I didn't have anything to worry about! The potato + salt combination definitely did a far better job than my dishwasher would have done, as I regularly have to rewash these particular pans after the washing cycle is done.

All in all, while I'm not likely to bring out the potatoes every time I need to do the washing up, I do think this is a useful hack if you've got some particularly stubborn stuck-on food. I felt it worked particularly well with the greasy frying pan, so, if you're also struggling with the Christmas dinner washing up, I'd particularly recommend trying this hack on anything that combines grease and burnt-on food.

Unless you're completely disinterested in cooking and appliances, or you've been living under a rock, you'll have heard of air fryers. These nifty kitchen gadgets have taken over most household kitchens as a healthier, more efficient, and easier-to-use alternative to ovens.

As a young professional living in a small apartment, often rushing around with little time to cook, having an air fryer has definitely made my life easier. I've been amazed at the variety of meals you can make from A to Z in the appliance, and I love the simplicity of closing the drawer and waiting for the "beep" to tell me it's done.

As Christmas time is upon us, I've been wondering whether the air fryer can take on the biggest challenge of them all: can you cook a whole Christmas dinner in an air fryer? I put the mighty appliance to the test to find out.

Now, before I got started, my instinct was that the air fryer could probably handle each separate element of the meal with no issues. My doubts were on whether I'd have to turn on my oven to keep everything warm (thus reducing the point of the experiment) and whether the results would be just as delicious as a traditional Christmas roast made in the oven. Read on to find out what I found!

Can you cook a whole Christmas dinner in an air fryer?

For the purpose of this experiment, I used the Proscenic T22 air fryer, a single-drawer appliance with a capacity of 5.3 quarts. It's Bluetooth-connected, so you can control it via an app, a feature I love when I'm working late and cooking dinner at the same time.

In terms of the meal, I opted for a British roast dinner featuring poultry (in my case, a small poussin or chicken), roast carrots, parsnips, potatoes, Brussel sprouts, and pigs in blankets (for the non-Brits, those are sausages wrapped in bacon - delicious). Having previously cooked steak in the air fryer, I'm sure roast beef would be perfectly feasible, too.

For some of the elements of the meal, I followed the recipes included in the Proscenic T22's manual, while for others, I worked off my previous experience cooking meals with this appliance.

I didn't extend my experiment to dessert, but from past experiences, heating up pies and the likes in the air fryer works a treat, so once your main and sides are done, you could give it a clean and pop your pastry of choice in to get warmed up.

Christmas dinner in an air fryer: The meat dishes

When I first got my air fryer, I mostly imagined cooking vegetables and side dishes or reheating and defrosting meals. I was highly skeptical that it could cook meat properly, but I gave it a go and was very impressed with the results.

As I embarked on this challenge, I was optimistic about cooking a chicken (or, in my case, a small poussin) in the air fryer, having previously had delicious air-fried chicken breasts and wings.

With a container size of 5.3 quarts, I could have gone for a slightly bigger chicken or maybe a turkey crown - but as it was just myself, I went for a 0.5 kg bird, which I lightly covered in oil and seasoned with salt, pepper, and time. The key to cooking in the air fryer is to not overdo it on the fat, so I was conservative and used about 1 tbsp for the whole bird.

For the cooking time, I used my previous experience and put the chicken in for 15 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius. A few minutes in, my kitchen was filled with the familiar smell of a roast dinner. At the end of the timer, I opened the drawer to find the poussin had developed a brown, crispy skin and looked juicy and tender. I flipped it carefully and put it on for another 5 minutes so the skin below would have a chance to crisp up, too.

Once it was done, I let it rest while I cooked the rest of the sides. I was really impressed by how moist it was while being completely cooked through after just 20 minutes.

The pigs in blankets were incredibly easy to do. Once I'd wrapped the sausages in bacon, I popped them in the fryer with no additional fat for 12 minutes, and they came out golden and crispy.

Taste test: Honestly, this tasted exactly like an oven-cooked chicken and took considerably less time and effort. I wasn't concerned about checking the skin every 5 minutes or basting it, and I got a great result.

The pigs in the blanket were crispy and perfectly cooked, just like they would be coming out of the oven.

Verdict: This is a great cooking technique if you happen to be cooking a smaller bird or parts of a chicken, but it is obviously limiting if you're hosting a large meal for more people than yourself. For meat-based sides, the air fryer also does a great job at cooking them with minimal mess and hassle.

Christmas dinner in an air fryer: The vegetables

For my Christmas meal's sides, I went for honey-roasted (or, in this case, fried) carrots and parsnips, balsamic Brussels sprouts, and, of course, roasted potatoes.

For the carrot and parsnips, I followed the recipe and cooking times recommended in the recipe booklet that came with the Proscenic T22. I coated the vegetables in 1 tablespoon of oil, one tablespoon of honey, some salt, pepper, and thyme. I then loaded them up in the air fryer and selected the "Root vegetable" preset, which runs for 15 minutes. At the halfway point, my air fryer beeped to let me know I should shake the vegetables around to ensure more even cooking - a very nifty feature.

At the end of the 15 minutes, I found the vegetables were starting to look roasted but were still very undercooked. I like an al dente carrot as much as the next person, but this was verging on raw, so I ran the "Root vegetable" preset again. By the end of that, they were still a bit underdone for my taste, but I was getting really hungry and aware I had many more sides to cook before I could actually enjoy my meal, so I took them out.

I then went in with my Brussels sprouts, which I'd trimmed and cut in half and lightly coated in 1 tablespoon of oil, 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar, and seasoning. The recipe booklet recommended the "Root vegetable" preset once more, this time reducing the cooking time to 10 minutes. By the end of that, the sprouts were looking quite roasted on the outside, but a quick prod with a fork revealed they were barely cooked inside.

I followed a tip I'd seen on TikTok and filled the bottom of the air fryer with about 1cm of water to let the sprouts steam slightly, and put them back in for another 10 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. When I took them out again, they were looking very charred but still mostly uncooked in the middle, which was a bit baffling. At that point, because the charring was letting off an unpleasant smell, I actually finished them off in a frying pan.

Taste test:
I was very disappointed with the results. The sprouts were only cooked through because I'd flash-fried them in a pan and add some oil to avoid them charring further. The outer leaves were nice and crispy thanks to the air fryer, but for 20 minutes of cooking, the results were very underwhelming.

Verdict:
Perhaps I haven't found the right recipe, but I don't think brussels sprouts belong in the air fryer. You'll get better results in less time in a frying pan or oven. Maybe parboiling them ahead would have helped, but following the recommended recipe, I did not enjoy the results.

Christmas dinner in an air fryer: The roast potatoes

Now, for the star of the show: the potatoes. They're my favorite part of a roast dinner, and I was curious to see how they'd come out in the air fryer.

I researched cooking times prior to this experiment and found a TikTok from Poppy Cooks, a celebrity chef who specializes in cooking potatoes in various shapes and forms. She recommended parboiling the potatoes in the air fryer, filling the bottom of the drawer with a little bit of water, and setting them off for 20 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Once that's done, she upped the temperature to 200 degrees and put the potatoes back in for 15 minutes, salting and seasoning once they're out of the fryer.

I followed her method exactly and was super impressed with the crispy exterior and mushy, fully-cooked interior. They did look quite pale compared to oven-roasted potatoes, which I attributed to the lack of oil.

Taste test: Straight out of the fryer with a bit of salt, the potatoes tasted really nice. The smaller bits especially had a good crunchy crust and were lovely and soft inside.

I couldn't help but feel, however, that they tasted like a very healthy version of the fatty roast potatoes doused in oil we usually enjoy at Christmas. If you're health-conscious or need to cut down on fats this festive period, this is a great way to do so, but roast potato fans might be a bit disappointed.

Verdict: The air fryer is a great vessel for cooking potatoes of all shapes and sizes, roasted included, especially if you want to reduce your oil and fat consumption. While the oven yields slightly more luxurious results, I appreciated not having to wash a greasy oven tray and a pan for parboiling.

Christmas dinner in an air fryer: The verdict

Now we've established that you can, in fact, cook a whole Christmas meal in an air fryer, the question is really whether you should.

If you are lacking an oven or don't want to turn it on for whatever reason, then this alternative cooking method can ensure you get a full roast dinner at least reminiscent of Christmas. Likewise, if you want a healthier option or are only cooking for yourself, then the air fryer route might be the way to go.

Cooking a whole meal this way did produce fewer dirty dishes than cooking in an oven, but I didn't find it sped up the process significantly. As my air fryer only has one drawer, I had to do each component one at a time, which was quite inefficient.

In an oven, you can put your sides on one tray and main in another, and you can use residual heat to keep dishes warm if you need to. By the time I had finished making all my sides, the chicken was going a bit cold, so I gave that a quick blast in the fryer, but really, the whole thing could've done with being kept warm in the oven, reducing the point of cooking in the air fryer in the first place.

Overall, some elements of my meal came out really well, and I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy eating it. The air fryer was also a great vessel to heat up the leftovers without a mess. However, for my next roast, I would probably consider air frying the meat but roasting the sides in the oven.

Once I was done cooking and eating, I did wish I had a countertop dishwasher to deal with all the dirty dishes, but that might be a present to myself this Christmas...

Start by deciding where you’re going to clean your artificial tree. You’ll need enough space that is well-lit to see what you’re doing. We’d also suggest protecting the floor with a dust sheet or even newspaper.

Giving your Christmas tree a good shake will help get that initial layer of dust off. Then, use a vacuum to speed up the dusting process - a handheld vac works best, like the Black + Decker Dustbuster at Amazon. Hold the vac a few inches away from the tree to avoid sucking up the needles or any lights, then give the tree a light vacuum all over.

A duster (like this microfiber duster at Amazon) will help to clean any of the remaining dusty areas. Christina advises “against using a feather duster as feathers are prone to falling out or leaving particles as you clean.”

Make sure you check each branch for any dust build-up and use your step ladder to reach the higher branches. It's best to work your way down so that you catch any fallen dust on the lower branches.

How to wet clean an artificial Christmas tree

After dry cleaning your tree, now it's time to test whether you can clean it more thoroughly using a cleaning solution.

Create your solution using two cups of warm water and one teaspoon of dish soap. As Christina explains, “there’s no need for any harsh cleaning products.”

Then, spray onto a hidden part of your tree, let it sit for around 30 seconds, and wipe it clean with a cloth. If the color has been damaged, your tree should only be dry cleaned - so don't use any more cleaning solutions.

2. Clean from top to bottom

Now to get cleaning. Christina’s top tip here is “to use either a white or light-colored cloth to avoid any potential dye bleeding onto the branches, especially if you have a white tree.” This set at Amazon should do the trick.

Start from top to bottom. Stand on your step ladder and spray your cleaning solution onto the branches. Then, reach for the inside of each branch, gently pulling your cloth towards the outer tips. When you reach the bottom, give the tree stand a good wipe, too.

“If you’re cleaning at the end of the season, this method will also help you slim down the branches to easily pack them away back in the box” adds Christina.

1. Prepare your turkey

“The first step is to select your turkey. I like birds between 10 and 17 lbs because they grill more evenly,” says Bill.

Remember to defrost your bird if you’re cooking from frozen. Don’t underestimate the timing. “Allow two to three days for the turkey to thaw,” advises Bill. It’s best to do this in the fridge to minimize the risk of food poisoning.

Next, remove the giblets and tuck the wings under the bird for an even finish.

A tender turkey is the goal if you want to delight your guests. Bill recommends marinating it for at least 24 hours with your flavoring of choice to pack a punch.

2. Begin cooking

Preheat your grill to medium heat. The secret to grilling turkey is to cook it over indirect heat to avoid cooking it too quickly on the outside. Once you place your turkey on the grill, turn off the burners directly underneath.

The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the turkey. As a rough guide, manufacturer Napoleon recommends allowing 20 minutes for every pound of meat.

If time is on your side, you may want to experiment with slow-grilling your turkey for melt-in-the-mouth meat. “I like to slow cook the turkey for 3 to 4 hours at 250 F,” says Bill.

Resist the temptation to keep lifting the lid - it will release heat and take longer to cook. Not sure if it’s done? Check the internal temperature of the meat is 165 F to ensure it’s cooked through.

With all this effort to consider, it's important to ensure that you know how to keep your Christmas tree alive for longer. This way, it can remain a beautiful centerpiece in your home after the main celebrations.

To enjoy it for the maximum time possible, you may simply put it up earlier. This makes the right care even more vital, as you'll still want it to look full and bushy when the big day arrives. Meanwhile, if you're traveling over Christmas, like me, you'll want to ensure you're not returning home to a limp and lifeless tree. It might also be your first real tree, so use this advice as a starting point for general care.

We consulted the experts from Pines and Needles, who have provided the know-how to care for your Christmas tree this season properly. By following the following tips, you will enjoy the smell and aesthetic of your tree for longer.

How to keep your Christmas tree alive for longer

1. Choose the right tree

The first step to a long-lasting Christmas tree is choosing a fresh one. Take a needle and gently pull it from a branch. If it easily comes off or if it's brown, the tree probably isn't fresh. Fresh needles should be flexible and vibrant. If a needle breaks easily, the tree is dry. Fresh needles should be pliable. Shake the tree gently; if many needles fall off, it's dry.

Trees also have different lifespans. The Fraser Fir is known for its needle retention. The Noble Fir has strong branches and a pretty blue-green color. With a strong fragrance, the balsam fir makes a classic Christmas tree.

2. Prep the trunk

In the same way that you trim flower stems before putting them in a vase, you should do the same with your Christmas tree. It helps it stay fresh while taking in water, which can prolong its life.

Veronika Kusak, Director of Pines and Needles, says, "Saw off the bottom one inch (3 cm) of the trunk just before setting it up. This creates a fresh cut and opens up the pores in the bark that might otherwise become blocked with sap within a few hours of being cut. Through capillary action, the tree can absorb water."

You might consider using one of the best chainsaws if you don't want to cut the trunk yourself.

3. Water Immediately

Trees can absorb water quickly, especially in the first few days. If the tree is out of water for more than a few hours, it might seal over and have trouble absorbing water.

4. Choose the Right Location

As we enter the season of central heating and dehumidifiers, it's important to choose a cooler spot for your tree, perhaps next to a window.

Tree placement is crucial to keeping it alive. Keep it away from heating vents, fireplaces, or direct sunlight, as these can dry it out quickly. Maintain a consistent temperature around the tree to keep it healthy.

5. Use a Proper Stand

A sturdy tree stand should be able to hold at least a quart of water per inch of the trunk's diameter. Some stands come with built-in reservoirs to keep the tree moist.

6. Keep it hydrated

Remember to water your Christmas tree, just like any plant.

"Place your tree in plain water—avoid soil or sand, because these can block the pores in the bark. The best way to do this is to use a stand made for Christmas trees," Veronika says. "You can waste a lot of time trying to make a tree stand upright in a bucket using bricks or stones!"

Check the water level regularly and don't let the base dry out too fast. "Sap seals the bark within a few hours when the water level goes below the tree's trunk, so even if you refill the Christmas tree stand, the tree won't absorb any more water," Veronika says.

Furthermore, she says that a Christmas tree can drink 2-3 pints (1-2 liters) of water a day, depending on its size and central heating settings.

Veronika Kusak, Director of Pines and Needles, says, "when water level drops below the tree’s trunk, sap will re-seal the bark within a few hours, preventing the tree from drinking any further water even if you then re-fill the Christmas tree stand. 

7. Feed the tree

If you want to extend the life of your tree, you can buy commercial Christmas tree feeds at most garden centers. If you'd rather DIY, add a tablespoon of corn syrup to the water, serving as a food source for your tree.

Additionally, you can use a tree preservative in the water. These solutions usually contain nutrients that can help prolong the tree's life. Plain water is fine, too, if you change the water often.

8. Create a routine

A Christmas tree needs regular care, just like a baby does. Your tree will thrive in the right environment if it is fed, watered, and rotated regularly throughout the day.

Despite the temptation to angle your tree so that the best side is always visible and sparse spots are hidden, it's important to turn it regularly so everyone gets sun. As a result, the needle drop will be reduced, so your tree will look better, and you won't have to vacuum as much.

Whether you're thinking about the planet or wanting to save some money, asking, "Can you keep your tree until next year?" is a worthwhile feat.

This year, nonprofit organization Petals for Hope will mark March 8 by delivering 1,000 bouquets of tulips to frontline female healthcare workers to celebrate their work through the adversity of the COVID-19 pandemic. Petals for Hope work to repurpose flowers, such as those from flower delivery services, in order to raise the spirits of local community members. The event is part of wider celebrations for American Tulip Day, which is taking place virtually this year on the 27 and 28 March.

The charity will be gifting the bouquets to healthcare workers, teachers, and both workers and women at shelters and transitional houses for domestic violence survivors. Brittaney Sard, the founder of Petals for Hope, explains that the organization “typically repurpose event and wedding flowers, delivering them to those in need and composting them following their second life to work towards a more sustainable world”. Their gesture this Monday will go even further in an effort to honor women’s work through the pandemic.

Women hold more than three-quarters of healthcare jobs in the United States, and close to 70% of all healthcare jobs globally, according to Catalyst. Sard explains why she feels it’s important to utilize her organization to celebrate women.

“As a female founder who has also spent time working in male-dominated corporate settings, I have seen first hand the difficulty that can arise and the barriers that are in place for women. I don't want my future daughters or granddaughters experience this or to feel hindered or less capable because they are a woman.

We are just as powerful, capable, and strong as men, and we deserve the same opportunities. Working towards social, cultural, and political change takes time and we have to continue to bring awareness in order to get there.”
