“For those on a budget, soft luggage will be the best option. However, you should be aware of any wet weather conditions, and keep valuables well-protected or elsewhere. Soft cases often only have two wheels, making them a little more challenging to move, and if one wheel breaks, you won’t have any backups,” said Opperman.

This one in particular wows as it’s more supportive than more expensive options made out of similar due to its higher sides – you can be sure your neck will be secure and won’t move during a long snooze. However, those with thicker necks may wish to avoid this one as you might feel too restricted. Also, did we mention that the Cabeau Evolution Classic has a mobile phone pocket on the side? It sounds neat, but we’re not sure how this would affect the balance of the pillow. Maybe you can store some earbuds in there instead.

The velour cover is incredibly soft and cozy, although some have commented that this in combination with the memory foam makes for a very toasty experience. If you prefer cooler temperatures for sleeping, you might want to consider the Cabeau Evolution Cool Pillow instead.

One point against this travel pillow is that it doesn’t come with a storage bag (this can be purchased separately) and the cover material is a bit of a hair and dust magnet, but you can simply unzip the cover and throw it in the washing machine.

7. Teton Sports Camp Pillow

As the name suggests, the Teton Sports Camp Pillow is more geared for those going camping or backpacking than snoozing on a red-eye flight. It’s comfortable, convenient, and compact – it compresses down to 4 x 7 x 9 in (10 x 18 x 23 cm) and can be packed in the included drawstring storage bag so you can easily stow it away in your backpack. Note that when you first take it out of the bag, it takes this travel pillow about six hours to fully fluff up, so be sure to do this well in advance of when you want to go to sleep.

8. Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow

If you want size and color options, then you’ve come to the right travel pillow. The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow comes in four different sizes, starting at small (12 x 16 in) all the way up to extra large (16.5 x 27 in). Out of all the pillows on this list, it has the most interesting designs by far, rather than just a solid block of color (although that’s an option too). At the time of writing, the small size was more expensive than the larger sizes, so be sure to shop around.

This is an eco-friendly travel pillow and a great choice for those with green values. The cover, made from 60% recycled polyester, is soft but durable, and the inside is actually made from excess foam from mattress production. That’s really neat and makes for a firmer pillow, but we think that might be why some users have noted it can also be a bit lumpy.

It takes a while for the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow to fluff up to its full potential (4 inches thick), but many reviewers commented that it fluffed up well – you can restore loft with a good shaking out. The only downside is that there is no separate case to protect the pillow from the elements, so you just have to fold and tuck the pillow into itself, but it does compress down well.

We’d say that this travel pillow is better suited for camping, but if you do take this on a flight, bus, or train journey, you can use it as lumbar support when you’re not sleeping. Overall, it’s a bit expensive for what it is, but can you really put a price on a good night’s sleep?

9. J-Pillow Travel Pillow

Okay, we know this one looks a bit weird, but bear with us, it’s actually REALLY comfortable. The funny shape helps cradle your chin and keeps your head elevated in the perfect position for a restful sleep. And, get this, the J-Pillow Travel Pillow is actually designed by a former flight attendant! It even won the British Invention of the Year award in 2020.

Its three-way support system works like so: the ‘wings’ wrap around your head to support it, the middle part fills the gap between your neck and shoulders, and the ‘trunk’ provides chin support to stop your head from nodding down. It’s a lot more flexible than most travel pillows due to its J-shape. It’s nice and soft, and while it does provide some support, some might feel like it doesn’t provide enough – on a scale from comfy to supportive, it tips more towards the former. A few reviewers did mention that they had trouble keeping this pillow in place and that it would slip, so if you’re a fidgety sleeper you might want to give this one a miss.

When not in use, you can stuff this travel pillow in the provided sack and compress it down. There’s also a handy snap-loop fastener at the top of the pillow that peeks out of the bag that you can use to attach the pillow to your luggage. Another bonus is that the J-Pillow is machine washable, so you can throw the whole thing into the machine.

Another point to note is that the J-Pillow Travel Pillow has a very generous return policy – if you try it and don’t like it, you can return it within six months, no questions asked. Although some customers said it did take a little while to get a response, they did get one eventually.

10. Ostrichpillow Go Neck Pillow

Elegant, stylish, clean lines – the Ostrichpillow Go Neck Pillow is definitely a first-class travel pillow. Made with high-density memory foam to provide neck support, it feels soft but is quite firm. This, in conjunction with its neck-brace design, makes it one of the more supportive travel pillows on this list. It’s also a bit heavier compared to other travel pillows, but that’s not saying much as it’s still under a pound.

Unlike the other best travel pillows on this list, the Ostrichpillow Go Neck Pillow uses a Velcro strap to create a custom fit rather than toggles. Some users, however, were annoyed to find that things kept getting stuck to the Velcro, like their hair or shirts.

There are a few color options, although it’s the color on the inside that changes instead of the outer one, so that'll appeal to those who like to keep things low-key and prefer a more minimalistic look. To clean the pillow, you just zip off the sleeve and toss it in the washing machine. It comes with a travel bag that’ll squish the Ostrichpillow Go by up to 60%. When not traveling, it’s recommended that you store it uncompressed.

The main complaint about this travel pillow is that as the sides are quite high, it’s much better suited to those with longer necks. That, and the way it hugs your neck mean it does get uncomfortably warm after a while.

Choosing the best travel pillow for you

People come in all shapes and sizes, so what might be the ideal product for you will be someone else’s idea of torture. So, while there is no one correct answer for everyone, Smartphit founder Tim Gumilar does have some advice to share based on his seven years working as a physiotherapist, along with his own experience with back pain.

Now, how can we reduce this tension? Well, one way would obviously be to get those muscles stronger, but that takes time and you’re here to learn how to pick a good travel pillow (although Tim can help you with neck exercises if you’re interested). We also need to make sure that those muscles get sufficient rest and time for recovery. Tim explains that “That’s where travel pillows come into play. Even during rest time, like lying on a bed or sitting, we don’t support our neck. Those muscles that are already overused need to work now in a rest position as well, and that can impact and cause even more tension in the neck.”

Tim maintains that “the most important thing when using any kind of travel pillow is to get your neck supported as much as possible so that our muscles can relax”. He also adds that “it’s important that our lower back is supported as well” when in a seated position for a long time and that we “give our muscles time to relax, so that they’re not under tension 24/7”. Placing a pillow behind your lower back will help support it. If you’re on a budget, you can use a rolled-up towel instead.

Now, with that knowledge under your belt, you also need to ask yourself the following questions when selecting a travel pillow.

What do you need it for?

If you’re traveling by plane, train, bus, or car and are going to be sitting for a long time, will you be sitting in the middle, aisle, or window seat? For the most part neck-brace and U-shaped pillows will be fine options for wherever you’re sitting, as long as you’re upright. But do be aware that some are better for the middle and aisle seats versus the window seat.

Whereas if you’re going camping, then a neck-brace pillow isn’t really going to be ideal as you’ll be sleeping in a totally different position and require a different kind of support. You’ll probably want something that’s less rigid and a bit softer and snugglier.

What position will you be sleeping in?

For seated sleeping it’s best to keep your neck upright, with your head aligned over your spine to prevent any muscle strain. Neck-brace style pillows are perfect for this, although some might find those a bit claustrophobic and constrictive. U-shape pillows are also a great option as they sit snuggly around your neck and keep your head from flopping about.

If you’re lying down, then you’re better off with a more traditional pillow shape as your weight will be transferred differently and you’ll need support in another way. Sleeping on your front means your head and neck doesn’t require as much support in this position, so a softer pillow is recommended. Side sleepers need a bit more support, but you don’t want a pillow that’s too high as that’ll just put your neck at an uncomfortable angle. Those that sleep on their back will find they need a bit more support as there’s more of a gap to fill, so firmer pillows will help.

What kind of firmness do you want?

The firmer a pillow is, the more support it provides. People also have different preferences for what feels comfortable for them. Sometimes you want to find the right balance between function and comfort.

The material a travel pillow is filled with will determine how firm it is – inflatable, memory foam, beads, or fiber filler. Inflatable pillows allow you to easily control the firmness of your pillow. Too soft? Give it a few puffs. Too firm? Just let a little air out.

Memory foam is praised for its soft yet firm properties, but it does retain heat. It’s one of the top choices for support and comfort, but can be a bit bulky and more expensive.

If you’re not a fan of memory foam, then a good middle ground would be a pillow filled with some kind of micro beads or fiber. Pillows filled with microbeads are quite malleable and the more you squish them the firmer they become. Fiber-filled pillows can vary in firmness depending on what exactly they’re filled with and how much.

How much space do you have?

When you’re traveling, it’s better to save space and pack light if you can. Most travel pillows come with their own storage bag that allow you to compress them even further which makes transporting them a lot easier. For example, inflatable pillows are much more portable because you can remove the ‘filling’ and just roll them up. Whereas something like a memory foam pillow keeps its shape but takes up more room.

What’s your budget?

Consider how much you want to spend. Travel pillows tend to be in the $15-$80 range. Just because one is more expensive, doesn’t necessarily make it better. If you’re a frequent traveler then it makes sense to invest in a decent quality pillow that you’ll be able to get a lot of mileage out of. If you only occasionally travel, then it might not be worth shelling out the big bucks for something you’ll only use a handful of times.

Should you go on a vacation with a dog?

It might sound obvious, but one of the most important things to consider when planning a vacation with your dog is whether your dog will enjoy it. Just like humans, every dog is different – and what one might love, another might barely tolerate. 

For example, if you have a lazy couch potato that often ‘puts on the brakes’ whenever their walks stray too far away from home, you might want to consider whether a hiking holiday might be the right choice. Alternatively, if you have a sensitive dog that dislikes any deviation in their routine, you might find that they’re better off staying with an experienced friend or dog sitter instead. 

It’s also important to consider whether there are any ‘blind spots’ in your dog’s training. Is their recall bombproof, or can they be easily distracted? Are they reliably quiet, or can they often bark? Are they good at leaving furniture alone, or are they a serial chewer? 

While none of these things would necessarily mean your dog would have to be left behind, they are all aspects that would need management and consideration (and it’s also worth thinking about whether you want to give up your precious relaxation time to worry about stopping your dog from being loud or destructive!). 

However, that being said, there are many dogs that would not only tolerate the change to their routine, but would thrive in a new and exciting environment. It’s all about considering what’s right for both you and your dog. 

What to pack for a vacation with a dog

Maddie from the popular TikTok account @myboyrudder shared her top tips on how readers can pack effectively for their next vacation with a dog.

"These are the main things that I pack when going away with Rudder on vacation:

1. Travel Bag

I love this travel bag because it comes with collapsible bowls, containers for food, and plenty of functional storage to keep my dog’s belongings organized and easy to access. It even has a back strap so that it can be put over the best carry-on luggage!

2. Two-in-one Water Bottle

This water bottle with a built-in dog bowl is an absolute must. Any water left behind by your dog funnels itself back into the bottle, which means that none is wasted.

3. Travel Crate

Perhaps most importantly, please restrain your dog when traveling by car. The ideal solution would be a crash tested crate such as a Gunner or Ruffland kennel. If you’re unable to accommodate a kennel, consider a crash tested harness."

Where to go on a vacation with a dog

Finding the right accommodation for both you and your dog is a key part of planning a vacation with a dog. One of the first aspects to consider is how far you'll need to travel. If you have a particularly active dog, or one that can experience travel sickness, then sticking them in a car for hours at a time might prove a little tricky. 

If this is unavoidable, then try giving them a nice long walk before you set off and plan in plenty of rest stops so that they can stretch their legs and have a toilet break. Meanwhile, if your dog experiences motion sickness, then talk to your vet to see whether they can recommend any medication. 

The next step in planning your vacation is finding suitable pet-friendly accommodation. Prepare for any emergencies

• Make sure to keep up with your credit commitments. Always pay bills on time and absolutely never miss a repayment, less you want derogatory marks to appear on your profile.
• Don’t apply for too many forms of credit over an extended period. If you’re shopping around for auto loans – which is always recommended in order to find the right deal for your needs – lenders will expect to see several different applications over a short space of time, which won’t damage your score. However, applying over a longer period, or applying for lots of different forms of credit, can put a dent in your score, so try to avoid repeated applications in the months before applying for a car loan.
• Pay down debt. Doing so can improve your credit utilization ratio, which is a key component of your credit score.

Some are dedicated cards that include cover outright, while others require you to pay extra to take advantage, or per callout, which means you’ll only pay when you need help. 

Cell phone companies
Also a little leftfield, perhaps, some of the best cell phone providers, including AT&T and Verizon, provide roadside cover too. If you have a phone with either, it’s certainly worth checking to see if they’re offering a bundle deal that could save you a good few dollars.

Basic manufacturer, or factory, limited warranties that come with brand new vehicles are like guarantees you get with new TVs or refrigerators and they vary between automakers. For instance, the industry standard is a three-year or 36,000-mile warranty, which means that once a car is either three years old or hits the 36,000-mile mark, the warranty expires. Some manufacturers, such as Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, offer longer warranties of five years/60,000 miles. 

A factory warranty, sometimes known as a 'bumper-to-bumper' warranty, covers repair and labor for almost all parts of a vehicle. There are exclusions such as parts that fail due to general wear and tear (eg brake pads, tires and wiper blades), plus damage or negligence caused by an accident.

What is an extended warranty?

New car buyers may also be offered an extended auto warranty for continued coverage when the manufacturer’s warranty expires (eg three years).

However, it is purchasers of used cars that are most likely to opt for extended car warranties, also known as vehicle service contracts or aftermarket warranties. After all, when you're buying second-hand you're investing in something of an unknown quantity. Such warranties bought for used cars are generally sold by auto dealers and third party-vendors, and they act like an insurance policy should your car break down or need repairs.

Prices are based on several factors such as the make of vehicle, its age, mileage and condition, the level of cover you’re seeking and whether you’re buying from a dealership or third-party provider.

Pros and cons of extended warranties

Pros

• Like any kind of insurance policy, if your car needs a costly repair that’s covered under your extended warranty, the policy could pay for itself after just one claim.
• Peace of mind is vital, especially when buying a used vehicle or pre-loved car, so not having to worry about expensive auto repair bills is really important.
• As any repairs are likely to have to be carried out by mechanics approved by your warranty vendor, these certified engineers will probably use branded parts, which should help your vehicle maintain reliability and retain its value.
• If your warranty plan also includes roadside assistance, tire protection and rental car reimbursement, that's another load off your mind, should the worst happen.
• Most warranties of this kind are transferable, so could be attractive to potential buyers when you come to sell your car.

Cons

• According to a Consumer Reports survey, 55% of people never end up using their extended plan.
• Most policies have exclusions. For instance, your warranty is likely to be voided if you don’t follow the recommended maintenance schedule.
• Broadly speaking, such warranties do not cover maintenance, which may exclude oil changes, timing belt replacements and tune-ups, as well as components subject to wear and tear, including brake pads and windshield wipers.
• It's unlikely that you will be able to choose your own mechanic to carry out a repair or maintenance - these will have to be performed at the automaker or third party vendor's approved repair shop, so you can’t shop around.
• You might feel tied down to your current vehicle if it has extended cover, meaning you will probably delay changing it for a newer model than you would otherwise.

1. While an extended warranty sounds like a good idea, it may overlap with the vehicle’s existing manufacturer’s warranty, so check that you’re not doubling up before signing on the dotted line.

2. When shopping for such warranties, call around and get quotes customized to your vehicle. You can compare each company’s prices and get a feel for customer service.

3. Warranties can vary in length of time, what they cover, price, where the work can be done and whether new or reconditioned parts are used, so be sure you know what you’re looking for.

4. If you baulk at the price of the auto service contract on offer, try to negotiate the price, just like the purchase of a car.

5. A basic plan probably best suits older vehicles, protecting them against listed essential mechanical and electrical components. Comprehensive packages may only be worth it if you drive a newer car packed with technology.

6. Think about the warranty term and how long you plan to own your car.

Are extended car warranties worth it?

Like any insurance policy, you pay for an extended car warranty in the hope that you’ll never use it. For many owners, the peace of mind alone is worth the price, and if something major goes wrong, then a single claim could be worth more than the entire policy. So, if you're worried about being able to pay for potential big repairs, one of these warranties could be right for you. 

However, plans can cost as much as several thousand dollars upfront, so it's also about conducting a cost comparison of the warranty versus common repairs. Paying for repairs yourself can work out cheaper than taking out a warranty.

A 2018 survey of more than 1,000 US-based consumers commissioned by software company Pegasystems Inc. revealed the majority of drivers (63%) do not have active extended warranties despite seeing their value. That said, 60% agreed warranties provide value and 62% with active warranties reported benefitting from them within the past year. 

The biggest barriers to consumers purchasing a warranty were found to be: cost (35%), not thinking they need one (32%), and lack of availability at the time of purchase (29%). 

Auto sales are pushing towards record highs for the first quarter of the year, after demand from American motorists for new vehicles soared during March. That’s the encouraging news being delivered by the latest J.D. Power auto sales data, which predicts a combination of low auto loan rates, stimulus checks and tax refunds, and pent up demand will see retail car sales reach 1.29 million units in March.

When adjusted for the same number of selling days, this is up more than 70% from March 2020 when dealerships and car manufacturers were first shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic and people were ordered to stay at home, and is also up 9.2% compared to the rather more normal times of March 2019. As a result, overall auto sales to retail customers for the first quarter of 2021 are forecast to be the second highest ever at 3.16 million units, rising by 20.5% compared with a year earlier and a 4.7% increase from Q1 2019.

“The very strong demand for new vehicles among U.S. households seen in January and February is continuing in March, meaning that multiple performance records will be broken for the first quarter,” said Thomas King, president of the data and analytics division at J.D. Power, who believes new highs will be established for average transaction prices, total consumer spending on new vehicles and retailer profitability.

Why are auto sales numbers on the up?

Given the average price of a new vehicle is on pace to reach $37,314 for the first three months of the year, which would be the highest ever figure for the first quarter, and almost $3,000 higher than Q1 2020, some might be surprised that auto sales are climbing so fast. However, with the average interest rate for the best auto loans in March expected to fall 92 basis points to 4.2 % from a year ago, it means the average monthly finance payment is up only $5 to $595. At the same time, the average trade-in value on used cars has risen to $5,713, rising by $2,664 - or 87% - from March 2020. 

"As consumers receive their stimulus checks and tax refunds, we expect demand for vehicles to increase,” adds Valeri Tompkins, senior vice president, OEM Solutions at TrueCar, which has posted similarly positive forecasts. “At the same time, production complications such as with microchips and shortages of other core materials are affecting a number of automakers, and retailers are struggling to have enough supply to meet the strong demand. Vehicles are turning on dealer lots very quickly because of the supply and demand imbalance.”

Is it a good time to buy a car?

The decision as to whether to buy a new car is rarely an impulsive one. Unless you happen to have the necessary funds already saved, car finance is usually needed, and then there’s usually the additional costs of roadside assistance services and a potential rise in your auto insurance to consider too. 

With some people potentially working from home more frequently following the pandemic-related shift towards remote working, it might also be the case that a brand new car isn’t entirely necessary if a regular commute is no longer required. In that situation, maybe a second-hand car which comes in at a lower price will suffice going forward, even if it means paying out for extended car warranties to guard against the greater risk of breakdown and repairs. 

If a new vehicle is definitely on the cards, and you can’t afford to buy outright, making sure your finances are in decent shape is a must. Does your situation allow for an additional monthly payment to be comfortably absorbed without risk of going overdrawn, and could you still continue paying off your loan should you fall out of work. Ahead of taking out a loan, optimising your credit score could save thousands of dollars on the cost of a new car as well. 

And finally, if you're willing and able to put off buying a new car until much later in the year, or at least until the end of the month, Kelly Shannon Manley Ph.D., associate professor of economics at the University of North Georgia, believes this could improve your chances of securing a better deal too. 

"Studies have shown that the first 3-4 months of the year have the fewest discounts with the best discounts in the last quarter," she explains, "but consumers can still try to improve the deal they get by shopping the last week of the month in case the dealership is trying to meet sales goals, shopping for previous year models in case the dealer still has some on the lot, and being willing to walk away to improve the likelihood of getting a better deal." 

Pressure is growing for auto insurance refunds to be issued to American motorists following a year in which many cars have laid idle in driveways far more often than they normally would. Amid pandemic-related lockdowns and more people working from home, driving and accident rates have slumped dramatically over the last 12 months, leading to calls for auto insurers to give back to drivers some of the insurance premiums that they have paid. 

According to the latest data collected by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) and the Center for Economic Justice (CEJ) covering March through to the end of October last year, some 181,000 fewer accidents were recorded during the pandemic across the four states of Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Texas combined than during the same period in 2019 - a decline of 31%. Importantly, this included a drop of more than 83,000 accidents after May, when most insurers had stopped providing the refunds and premium credits agreed around this time last year. 

Auto insurer profits “skyrocket”

With claims submitted to the best auto insurance companies by unfortunate drivers falling in similar measure, the CFA says the profits recorded by many auto insurers have “skyrocketed” as a result. Both Allstate and Progressive are noted for doubling recent dividend payouts to shareholders off the back of inflated car insurance underwriting income, while GEICO also doubled its year-over-year earnings compared with 2019.

“Since March 2020, consumers have been driving much less than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic, and that is still true today. As a result, crashes and claims are well below normal, which means massive insurer profits,” said J. Robert Hunter, CFA’s Director of Insurance and a former Texas Insurance Commissioner. 

Action for auto insurance refunds

Overall, the CFA and CEJ calculate that since the health crisis began, auto insurers nationwide have seen about $25 billion in fewer claims, while the premium relief afforded to drivers has been half or less than that. Even though the rates on the best auto loans remain low, motoring costs in general remain high, particularly if you factor in the price of extras such as roadside assistance services too.

Every dollar is therefore crucial to drivers, and importantly, consumer groups have not simply been standing by, and in numerous letters have been lobbying for State Insurance Commissioners to require auto insurers give back premium relief to consumers. 

Frustratingly, by December, California, Michigan, New Jersey, and New Mexico were the only states that had issued bulletins requiring this relief, and only California had required auto insurers to continue providing refunds beyond June 2020. Now, California’s Insurance Commissioner, Ricardo Lara, has been praised again, after ordering insurers to extend more discounts to motorists in the state, because companies had “continued to overcharge drivers” during the pandemic.

State Farm steps up for Californians

Following the ruling, State Farm announced that it will give $400m in rebates and discounts to its customers in California, “due to better than anticipated claim results”. As a result, around 3.5 million Californian motorists can now expect to receive a check of 18% of their premium - averaging out at about $100 per policy - for the period June 1 to December 31, 2020. Customers do not need to take any action to receive this dividend, which will be mailed in the form of a check as early as May.

However, as yet, the CFA notes that State Farm has not promised refunds for drivers in any other state, and that no other State Insurance Commissioner has required companies to provide additional refunds of windfall profits.

"Most State Insurance Commissioners have not taken the need for refunds seriously enough,” said Birny Birnbaum, Executive Director of CEJ. “They should take steps to make sure that insurance rates are fair and not excessive, since accidents are down and windfall insurer profits are up. The new crash data must be a wakeup call for them to swing into action.”

How to get an auto insurance refund 

Separate analysis by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund only supports the idea that car insurers have been the big winners of the pandemic at the expense of drivers. It found that regardless of how much a provider profited, the majority didn’t give back more than half of one month’s premium to their auto insurance customers. 

Where relief was given, the group said some companies gave customers credits on their bill, others implemented long-term rate reductions, and others issued two-month rebates. However, in a lesson to motorists that they probably need to take matters into their own hands if they want a refund, the group added: “In some cases, customers didn’t get a refund or rate cut unless they called. Still other insurers did nothing at all, even if customers asked.”

Jacob van Cleef, Associate, U.S. PIRG’s Consumer Watchdog campaign, says ideally customers need to know how their insurance companies have responded financially to COVID-19 and how they compare to other companies, if they want to stand the best chance of securing an auto insurance refund. 

“Foremost, consumers should know whether they got what was coming to them. Did you get a check in the mail? Did you get a credit on your policy or a rate reduction on your renewal? If you’re not sure, check notices from your insurer or call your agent,” he adds. “In addition, after you see how other insurance companies handled their windfall, you can use that as leverage to ask for better pricing from your insurance company or evaluate other insurers if you’re considering a switch. 

"How fairly a company has treated its customers during the pandemic may influence you when it’s time to shop for new insurance. Unsatisfied customers should also call the offices of state lawmakers to push for state-mandated auto insurance rebates. Otherwise, the decision to rebate will be left entirely up to the companies.”

Americans buying a new car are taking out record high loan amounts and having to make record high monthly payments, as the pandemic continues to impact the US auto industry. According to Experian, the average auto loan amount for a new vehicle increased nearly $2,000 year-over-year to reach $35,228 in the final quarter of last year, while the average monthly payment increased $13 to $576 over the same period. 

A similar pattern was also seen in the market for used cars, where the average loan amount increased from $20,824 to $22,467 year-over-year, and average monthly payments increased $18 to $413, surpassing $400 for the first time.

What’s driving auto prices higher?

What may surprise car buyers having to dig deeper into their pockets is that the interest rates charged on the best auto loans actually dropped over the quarter. The average rate for a new vehicle loan fell to 4.31%, down from 5.25% a year earlier, while interest costs on used cars fell from 9.05% to 8.43% over the same period. 

That leaves a rise in the price of the cars themselves as the only explanation for the increase in loan and payment amounts, something which the report says has likely been driven by buyers’ increasing preference for larger vehicles such as pickups and SUVs. Indeed, in the final quarter of last year, more than half of new vehicles financed were small and mid-sized SUVs. 

New cars back in favor

Some buyers who suddenly found themselves with stimulus checks, and who didn’t need to use the funds to keep their immediate finances afloat, are also likely to have been able to spend more on higher spec models, according to Experian, while lower stock levels - resulting from factory lockdowns - will have pushed prices higher too.   

Last summer’s pandemic-related trend towards buying used cars rather than new ones also appears to have fallen away, inevitably meaning people will be spending bigger on the latest vehicles off the production line. In particular, the report found that buyers with strong credit had recently been shifting away from used vehicles, back into financing new vehicles.

Keeping cars affordable

Following the increases in average loan amounts and payments, Melinda Zabritski, Experian’s senior director of automotive financial solutions, says “affordability will continue to be an important topic to pay attention to, particularly as market conditions continue to develop in 2021”. 

“The events of 2020 disrupted the automotive industry and we’ve seen some consumers shift away from patterns that have been cemented over previous quarters such as opting for used vehicles,” she added. “While we can likely attribute some of the change to stimulus checks, carry-over incentives and tight inventory, we find ourselves in uncharted territory.” 

For motorists, this means making car-buying choices that are within their financial means. With research recently showing the cost of owning a car in the US has passed $9,500, for some, the priority will always be finding the vehicles that are cheapest to run. 

Securing the lowest rates on car loans is one way of keeping costs down, but will usually require a decent credit score to show the lender that you’re good for what you wish to borrow. It’s also possible to save hundreds of dollars simply by shopping around for the best auto insurance.  

If buying second-hand, there’s a good chance you’ll be spending less if you were to buy a new car, but then the price attached to the best extended car warranties and the cost of roadside assistance cover could become major considerations too. 

American motorists have received a helping hand in their search for cheap car insurance after a new study identified the companies offering the lowest auto insurance rates for various types of driver. With some 105 million motorists in the US believing they don’t get value for money from their insurance policy, WalletHub’s findings leave few excuses for paying over the odds for motoring protection in 2021.

In a study which compared over 1 million quotes across 40 different driver profiles, GEICO has been crowned the cheapest car insurance company overall, tallying nicely with our guide to the best auto insurance, in which we also rate the insurer as the best for cheap premiums. 

With the cost of owning a new car rising above $9,500 last year, keeping motoring costs in check is an ongoing battle. Buying an older car will usually save money in the first instance, but with an increased risk of breakdown, many also pay out for the security that roadside assistance services and extended car warranties can provide. 

For any driver, the cost of insurance will represent a substantial outlay too, although premiums can vary widely depending on the insured, their needs, and their past driving record. To take this into account, the research also considered metrics covering 10 different sub-categories, such as age, gender, driving record, and different types of cover. 

Once all the data had been collated, USAA Insurance was found to provide the most affordable premiums for a full coverage policy, while those with a speeding ticket to their name are pointed towards Erie Insurance to keep costs low. The cheapest premiums for drivers who have been at fault for an accident in the past are typically found at Auto-Owners Insurance. 

In the final shakedown, however, it is Geico that will suit most, with the company leading the way for both younger and older drivers, and those who have poor credit.

Almost 1 in 3 Americans were unaware that less-than-good credit can affect premiums, and in some states - California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Michigan - credit history information may not be used in setting car insurance rates. Where it is permitted, however, making the effort to improve your credit rating could result in lower premiums.  

“Excellent credit history has a well-documented relationship with fewer claims filed by an insured and vice versa,” explains J. Tim Query, Professor & Mountain States Insurance Group Endowed Chair. “Insurers believe that individuals who are careful with credit usage will also exercise care in other areas, such as driving behavior.”

How to save money on car insurance

Elsewhere within the survey it was revealed that 61 million Americans have reduced their insurance coverage as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. With vehicle usage slumping during the initial lockdown last spring, and with more people working and staying at home in the months’ since, drivers have received car insurance refunds worth billions of dollars in the past year.  

When it comes to renewing policies, tailoring cover to any new circumstances is therefore key, particularly if you’ve gone from constantly motoring up and down the highways to barely using your vehicle at all. With the research finding that full coverage typically costs 178% more than minimum coverage, huge savings can be made by scaling back cover if it’s no longer needed. Making sure you get quotes from a number of insurers, and switching to a new company if necessary, is essential too. 

“The best way to save money on car insurance is to compare quotes from the cheapest car insurance companies and choose whichever provider offers the lowest rates. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive car insurance companies can be thousands of dollars per year,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst. 

“In addition to regularly comparing quotes and switching insurers when a good deal is available, drivers should make sure to take full advantage of car insurance discounts and, most importantly, drive safely. Accidents and moving violations can quickly result in increased insurance costs.”

Would-be car buyers have been told they could save almost $6,000 on auto loan interest payments if they have an excellent credit score, after the interest rates for new cars dropped to a near three-year low. According to the latest WalletHub Auto Financing Report, Americans searching for a new car armed with excellent credit can expect to pay $1,413 in interest on a $20,000 five-year fixed interest auto loan, over five times less than the interest of $7,390 that those in possession of a fair credit score will typically pay. 

The survey, which defined an excellent credit score as 720+, and a fair credit score as sitting within the range of 620-659, provides a stark illustration of the financial advantages that looking after and, if necessary, repairing your credit can have when borrowing. With the average FICO score in the US rising to 711 last year, even a small improvement in the typical Americans credit standing could lead to huge savings when it comes to car finance, and other types of loan, including mortgages. 

New car or used? 

At the same time, the report revealed that the average interest rate you can expect to pay for a new car has dropped to 3.45%, one of the lowest points in the past three years. And with the average rate that you’re likely to be charged for a used-car loan sitting at 3.99%, loan costs for new cars are around 14% cheaper than if you buy a second-hand car using finance. 

Nevertheless, with the pandemic causing vehicle usage to slump and household finances to tighten, sales of used cars increased in 2020; on the flipside, overall sales of new cars were down nearly 15% from 2019. 

Where to get your auto finance

While a drop in sales might normally see prices fall in response, reduced car production due to lockdowns saw supplies tighten and kept transaction prices high. As a result, the decision over where to source auto finance has actually become even more important than before, and can make a huge difference to what you can expect to pay overall. 

According to the data, car manufacturers are far and away the best place to start any search for finance, with a typical interest rate of just 1.3% almost two-thirds below the average rates you would pay across the market overall. Credit unions are usually the next-best option for new cars, with average rates currently at 2.63%, while they are the outright best option if you want a loan for a used car, typically charging 2.92%. Loan costs can then be expected to rise fairly dramatically if you approach a national bank (4.1% for new cars, and 4.82% for used), regional bank (4.63%, 5.23%), or a community or small bank (4.59%, 5.52%). 

Is now a good time to buy?

If you have a choice over when to buy a new car, as opposed to the frequency of your roadside assistance call outs making it an absolute must, making the most of market conditions is key. As to whether there’s room for further improvement in auto finance deals, or the possibility that the market might start to shift the other way, Mike Morgan, Professor of Practice, at the College of Business & Economic Development – The University of Southern Mississippi, believes that competition could still favor buyers going forward. 

“Considering the supply constraints and stubbornly high prices, I think one way that dealers and manufacturers move inventory is with aggressive financing deals. With interest rates so low, banks have money they need put to work. U.S. savings rates have been unusually high because people are staying home and not spending money. Couple the savings rate with the stimulus checks (which so many people just socked away in a savings account) and you have a large segment of consumers awash in liquidity. I think banks will aggressively court buyers who can put down a sizable down payment. So yes, I see aggressive financing deals and continuing high prices.”

All motorists will be familiar with that sinking feeling when you turn the ignition and nothing happens, or that bright warning light starts to flash on your dash. As well as putting the skids on your immediate travel plans, you also suspect that your wallet is about to take a beating from car repair costs too.  

Indeed, some 43% of motorists say car repairs have driven them into debt, and seeing as you’re unlikely to ever find a car that’s 100% reliable, all you can do is prepare yourself as best you can for when things do go wrong. Of course, the best roadside assistance services can usually take care of your immediate plight, but it’s what comes after that has the potential to cost you dear, and makes planning for how you’d cover car repair costs an absolute must.

Warranty cover

Probably the only positive to be taken from a newer car breaking down is that there’s a good chance your car is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty. And if it isn’t, hopefully you’re among the more conscientious motorists that like to arrange one of the best extended car warranties to protect against motor repairs. 

Whether you’ll escape a costly bill will depend on what an extended car warranty usually covers, and the nature of your breakdown. If it’s parts related, and due to general wear and tear, then you might be in luck, but you’ll need to check your cover and the small print first. But if you’ve been involved in an accident, a warranty won’t usually cover it, although the best auto insurance might.   

Put savings aside 

Some wise people that know suggest that the best way to avoid being blindsided by car repair costs is to have savings specifically set aside to pay for them. By simply opening an account with an online bank, and setting up a transfer from your checking account each month, you could soon have an emergency fund to fall back on. Even if what you can afford to save is small, something is better than nothing - indeed, a recent survey found that having as little as $100 in savings can help people avoid the need to borrow. 

Consider a credit card

If you don’t have money set aside, and car repair costs strike, maybe you’ll need to borrow to settle your repair bill. Using a credit card is one solution, and a reasonable one too, if you’re confident that you’ll be able to quickly pay off what you put on the card. However, if what you borrow is unlikely to be repaid in the near future, more thought is undoubtedly required, particularly as unpaid credit card debt can attract high rates of interest, and damage your credit score if payments aren’t met.

Use a personal loan

If you’re unfortunate enough to be hit by extremely high car repair costs, that are way beyond your immediate means, a personal loan might be where you must turn. Interest rates on a loan are usually lower than with a credit card, and the terms should offer more flexibility too. Indeed, some loans can be paid back over a period as long as 10 years, and you’ll know exactly what you need to pay off each month as well. Checking your credit rating, and boosting your credit score, should open the door to the lowest APRs.  

Payment plans

Knowing how costly some car repairs can be, many mechanics now offer 0% interest finance programs giving you the option to pay off your auto repair bill in monthly instalments. These point-of-sale finance options are usually similar to those which can be used to “buy now, pay later” for big ticket purchases. As such, these payment plans will offer similar advantages and disadvantages too, more of which you can learn about here.   

A new car? 

If you’re regularly ploughing more money into car repairs than would seem sensible, perhaps it’s time to think about a new car. After all, what you spend on a major repair bill could easily equate to a down payment for a new car, that would hopefully be less susceptible to letting you down too. The rates on the best auto loans are competitive right now as well, assuming your wider finances allow for such a large purchase. 

While we cannot stress enough how important it is to stay at home during this pandemic, we found a glimmer of light: if you have a car, you may be able to ever-so-briefly escape the confines of your house - as long as you stay inside your car. As it turns out, as important as it is to stretch your legs, it’s equally important to stretch your car’s legs, too. Here are four tips to keep your car in tip-top shape while you’re in isolation.

Whether you are under stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders or not, doctors and other experts recommend that you stay far away from people who don’t live with you, even friends and family. This isn’t just for your safety, but for the safety of others - you may be lucky enough to be asymptomatic if you have contracted COVID-19, but that doesn't mean that you can’t pass it on. 

To help you stay safe and keep your automobile healthy, here are some tips for maintaining your car during the lockdown.

Don't have a car? There may be good reason to buy one now: cheaper auto loans make for a good deal for potential car owners. 

1. Turn on your car's motor at least once a week

Even if you have nowhere to go and have enough of the essentials to last you several weeks at a time, consider turning on your car’s motor at least once a week and driving around for twenty minutes. This is very important to do to keep your car in good shape by ensuring that your 12V battery won’t die. Similarly and simply put, driving around for this amount of time will keep all the fluids moving throughout the car’s system, keeping it well-lubricated and keeping the rust at bay. If you know anything about cars, this is a good reminder to drive around the neighborhood for 20 minutes (and don’t forget to stay inside your car and continue to distance yourself). If you’re just learning about cars, a way to think about your vehicle is likening it to a human body. Without movement, your muscles would atrophy and your systems would not function properly - it’s the same with your car!

2. Deep clean you car's interior

Stuck inside? That doesn’t mean that you have to stop moving. You don’t have to go anywhere, and you can exercise right in your driveway if you don’t have one of the best home gyms or best exercise bikes. And the best part? You’ll be tackling a chore you’ve probably been putting off for a while. 

Deep clean your car. It’s now more important than ever. 

We spend a lot of time in our cars, so much so that they can become second homes. That means that there’s everything from food crumbs to toys to other personal belongings sitting in there. Take this time to sort out your stuff and figure out what can stay and what can go. Vacuum the interior and disinfect all surfaces - you never know what’s teaming on commonly touched surfaces like handles and the steering wheel. All you need is a microfiber cloth, a spray bottle, and a solution of 70% solution of isopropyl alcohol (more commonly known as rubbing alcohol) with water. This should be safe for almost all types of fabric that can be found in a car - just remember to wash the cloth after using it. 

This is especially important if you plan on taking your car to the mechanic (in most places deemed an essential service) or have just come back from getting your car fixed. 

3. Make space

 While things are looking up in many parts of the country, you still want to ensure that you limit exposure to the virus, which means spending the least amount of time possible in places where there’s a high amount of human traffic like grocery stores. To ensure that you can shop efficiently and reduce the amount of times you go out for food, make space in your car. Remove any items that aren’t essential on these trips. If you’re worried about what’s to come, it’s okay to make space for emergency provisions, like having a box of shelf-stable goods in the truck, or a first aid kit.  

4. Prepare your car for long-term storage

Let’s face it: you probably won’t be using your car for a while, especially if you are working from home for the time being and won’t be shuttling kids around until the fall, if all goes well. To keep it at the ready, it’s not just the interior that you need to pay attention to, but the exterior as well. Cleaning is essential, and you can keep it simple by taking a hose and washing down your car to keep it nice-looking and shiny. This will preserve the paint job, especially after a long winter for salt, snow, and grime coating it. 

To take it a step further, make sure your car is ready to go at a moment’s notice: change the oil, fill the tank up with gas, and put a weatherproofing cover over your vehicle if you plan on storing it outside.

In terms of vehicle selection, renters are spoiled for choice here too. Almost anything you can think of is likely to be available, including economy, compact, premium and luxury cars right through to different grades of SUV and van. Sportier models are also an option if you want to make a real impression, or there's hybrids if the environment is more your priority.  

Avis review: Pricing

In our evaluation, Avis came out around average price-wise for one-day rentals, and slightly better than the norm for weekly rates. For example, a one-day economy rental cost around $95 and a seven-day rental was around $245. 

To keep the cost down, it's advisable to try to find a non-airport Avis location, which can save you money since airport locations include additional fees on top of the taxes applied by many cities and states. And if you book in advance, Avis will also pick you up from your home or hotel and take you to the office to complete the paperwork.

Avis review: Rewards program

Avis Preferred is its rewards program and is free to join. For each dollar you spend, you earn one point. One drawback of Avis Preferred is that it takes 700 points to earn a free rental, which is high compared to most other car rental services. However, you do get 100 points for joining and can also earn bonus points for renting accessories, and there's no blackout dates either.

We tested using low-value and high-value cars costing above and below $25,000 but with lots of other factors playing a part, this is to be taken as a rough idea.

For both low and high-priced cars State Farm sat slightly below the national average. So for a low cost car that's around the $530 mark and for a high priced vehicle it's closer to $688 price.

For a state minimum requirement which is usually 20/65/20 we got the lowest prices, meaning there are savings to be made here.

Teen driver policies, which can represent an 80 percent price bump were at the lower end of the scale for State Farm.

Bundle discounts are also another positive feature. There are also lots of options for both basic and comprehensive coverage with the rates just below that of the national average. 

Allstate Auto Insurance: What you need to know

Allstate Auto Insurance isn't the most affordable car insurance out there, but that is because it offers lots of features and services aimed at making your cover better. This means you can save money over time through good driving but also that you can expect superb cover should anything go wrong during your cover period.

Allstate has an AM Best agency rating of A+ Superior for financial strength so this is at the scale where you can relax knowing your claim should be paid quickly. With complaints less than average the way this company works appears to be to the liking of its customers.

The inclusion of a mobile app is a big deal for Allstate as it uses the phone's camera to allow you to upload lots of important information so the claims process can begin right there and then immediately after an accident has happened.

Allstate also offers lots of incentives to encourage you to drive well and safely, including money off your policy when you go for certain periods without any accidents or claims.

Thanks to a guarantee process from the company, if you're not happy at any point after a claim has been handled then you are eligible to get credit back for the inconvenience caused. 

If you opt to use the tracking app it's possible to save even more money off your policy for driving responsibly. So while pricing may start at the higher end it's possible to bring that down over time if you're a good driver.

We got quotes for a car that's the most expensive to insure and one from the least pricey – but other factors beyond value to play a part so take that as a rough guide. Compared to that average the Allstate quotes were a little on the higher side.

For the low-cost car, coverage was around $566, which was a little above the average at $533.

For an expensive car the policy was also above average at $702 versus the average $688.

Multi-car policies did offer savings pushing the prices down to a few hundred dollars under the national average cost.

Adding a teenager can increase prices by up to 80% with some insurers but for Allstate we got a quite of $900, which is about $500 less than the average.

For the general state minimum cover, 20/65/20, the price was $50 less than the average at $329.

Geico Auto Insurance is one of the most popular and best auto insurance providers for vehicles in the US. According to ratings agency A.M. Best, the financial strength of Geico is an impressive "A++ Superior" making it one of the best out there for paying its claims. A distinct lack of complaints also helps give this insurer more positive appeal.

Despite being a heavy hitter, Geico still offers deals for new sign-ups meaning you can get some of the most premium coverage for your vehicle without spending too much. By premium we not only mean broad cover but also with features like a virtual assistant in the purpose built Geico app for your smartphone.

As a direct provider, Geico is able to offer lower rates than many of its competitors. Getting that quote is also a good experience thanks to a free and simple online quote system.

Adding a teenager to a car can increase costs by up to five times, but with Geico it makes very little difference to the policy.

The catch? There is a $250 deductible for the service. The service is renewable for up to seven years or 100,000 miles if that comes first. To be clear, this won't cover you for regular maintenance in the case of jobs like tune ups.

The roadside assistance is usually a premium charged at $14 per year. Not too bad then for such a reassuring feature.

Then the adjuster will pay for your rental car to take away with you and will also arrange collection so you can leave the rental at the shop when you're back to collect your fixed car. This last feature is something that isn't in all policies so be sure to check your cover before you go in expecting a rental car waiting for you.

As a Forbes 500 company for more than a decade, Auto-Owners Insurance is one of the best auto insurance companies in the US, yet remains a medium-sized company. As a result it offers the care you'd expect from a smaller company but while also managing to offer the financial security and affordable prices of a larger company. 

The company, despite its name, also offers other types of insurance beyond auto cover. If you do go for more than one type of cover you can make savings in the benefit bundles. 

Auto-Owners is available in 26 US states with a website available to check if you're eligible. That site will also allow you to track a claim's status but it won't let you get a quote as you'll need to speak to a local agent of this as the company wants to offer a personal touch.

Despite not offering an online quote the company is still high-tech as it does offer an app for your mobile which allows you to access you policy anywhere. You can pay bills and more using your iPhone or Android device. 

While discounts are available they're pretty standard. It's the customer care which is a stand-out feature. But that's just one of the features worth mentioning, read on to find out everything you need to know about Auto-Owners Insurance.

Positives include being a Forbes 500 company, having local agents, offering different types of insurance and bundle options. Negatives include claims processing times varying and rates not being as competitive as other firms. 

Auto-Owners Insurance: Verdict

Auto-Owners Insurance is one of the highest rated insurers based on customer reviews, largely thanks to excellent customer service and decent insurance coverage options. 

Pricing is affordable and very competitive and the company's financial strength of great enough to offer security to customers. The lack of online quotes isn't ideal for everyone but this is balanced out by an excellent agent service which can be well personalized. 

Auto-Owners is only available in 26 states but with the great offerings at excellent prices it's something you'll be lucky to have as an option where you are. 

Of the roadside services we reviewed, National Motor Club is by far the most expensive. Its basic plan is nearly $50 more a year than the next most expensive service. Depending on the plan you choose, you pay either $11 or $20 a month, which is nearly double the monthly rate of AllState Motor Club and AAA Roadside Assistance. This is why it doesn't feature among the best roadside assistance plans for this year.

National Motor Club’s Security Protection plan costs $11 a month and includes most of the common benefits a roadside assistance program should. It pays $100 per incident for tows, fuel delivery, tire changes, locksmiths and other services. This is standard for the roadside assistance programs we looked at.

This plan also includes a variety of discounts for car rentals and hotels. Generally, these kinds of discounts come with other services’ premium plans, but the cost for National Motor Club’s basic plan is comparable to many premium plans.

We also looked at National Motor Club’s Security Premier plan. At $240 a year, it is by far the most expensive plan we reviewed. One drawback is there’s no difference in the roadside assistance coverage between it and the basic plan. No matter which you choose, you get $100 worth of roadside assistance for towing, flat tire repair, fuel delivery and locksmith services. In case you’re in an accident when you are far from home, National Motor Club provides $500 worth of trip interruption reimbursement for Security Premier members, which is one of the lowest amounts we saw.

If your main concern is roadside assistance, this may not be the best program for you. However, the Security Premier plan offers additional services beyond the typical roadside assistance programs. Its identity theft resolution stood out the most to us. If your wallet or purse is lost or stolen, a specialist helps you put a fraud alert on your cards and monitor your accounts for suspicious activity. And if you are a victim of identity theft, the company works with you to resolve the situation.

With this service, you pay a flat fee for the service you need when you need it. You don’t have to sign up for a membership or pay for an annual subscription to access help.

Urgent.ly claims to work similar to Uber, a ridesharing service. As with Uber, Urgent.ly itself doesn’t provide the emergency roadside assistance; rather, it connects you with a service provider near you who has signed up to be dispatched through the company. These contracted providers compete with each other to help you out, so you may receive competitive low prices and fast response times. This is similar to how other at-will services, like Honk, work.

To use Urgent.ly, you open the company’s mobile app, select which service you need, input your personal and car information, then share your location. From here, you’re provided a summary of your request and can see how much the service will cost. If you agree to the cost, click next, and Urgent.ly will dispatch the nearest service provider to your car. You get a tracking link and an estimated time of arrival.

Urgent.ly covers towing, auto lockout, jump-starts, fuel delivery, flat tires, winch services and even motorcycle towing, and it accepts all major debit and credit cards. The app is available in the United States and Puerto Rico 24/7, though service may depend on your specific location and whether there are participating service providers near where your car broke down. The service is connected with over 55,000 providers, but there doesn’t seem to be any vetting on Urgent.ly’s end.

One nice thing about Urgent.ly is that once you submit your service request, you receive real-time updates on it and can even track the dispatched service provider in real time. You can also share your tracking with a friend or family member so they can watch along with you and make sure you’re taken care of.

Protect My Car sells three extended car warranties for used vehicles and cars with an expired manufacturer warranty. The available coverages and reimbursement policies are average, and the vehicle restrictions are limited to cars under 125,000 miles. While PMC is a big name in the car warranty industry, the quote process and customer service did not instill trust in me as I evaluated the service.

After submitting quotes for multiple vehicles, I didn't receive a phone call or an email concerning the quotes for several days. Once I was called, I was unable to convince the service to email the quote and was forced into a sales call to find out how much my car's coverage plan would be. I was not impressed by the call, as the salesperson spoke over me repeatedly. By comparison, Endurance provides quotes in a non-aggressive email within minutes of submitting the quote, making for a much easier comparison and shopping experience. In a different situation, as I tried contacting the support via the chat feature, nobody responded despite the live chat tool saying, "We reply immediately." I emailed the support and never received a response as well. This lack of attention is a concern.

PMC sells three vehicle service contracts – Driveline, Select and Supreme. These plans have either a 36- or 60-month pay period. Most services have a 24-month pay period. With a longer pay period, the monthly cost with PMC is significantly more affordable even if the coverage and plans are more expensive.

To qualify for these extended warranties, your vehicle must be under 10 years old and have less than 125,000 miles. These restrictions are about average. However, if your vehicle doesn't qualify, you can likely purchase the Ambassador plan. This plan, unique among the extended warranty brokers I reviewed, has no mileage restrictions and covers most vehicles regardless of age. However, instead of covering nearly 100 percent of the repair costs (minus the $100 deductible) like most extended warranty plans, the Ambassador plans pay between 25 and 50 percent of the repairs.

In the event your car needs to be repaired, you're responsible for the $100 deductible. This deductible is standard with most extended car warranty companies. Additionally, if your car needs to be in the shop for a few days, Protect My Car reimburses you for up to seven days at $30 per day. While the rental period is longer than most services, the daily reimbursement maximum is not. When you consider rental costs of compact budget vehicles, you are probably going to pay much of these costs out of your own pocket.

Protect My Car offers some attractive coverage options outside of the standard coverage you'd expect from a car warranty company, especially if you have a high-mileage vehicle. Its mileage and age restrictions are average. This service provides the longest pay period, but getting a quote is more difficult than other services and the customer support was generally lacking.

Delta Auto Protect has been selling extended car warranties since 2003. Currently, the service offers three levels of coverage with average restrictions. The plans are among the most affordable, but the sales and marketing approach can be quite aggressive. And while the contracts are relatively short, they aren't very easy to read.

After getting quotes for several vehicles, Delta Auto Protect's quote process received a disappointing C+ grade. This was primarily because it took two days to receive the quotes. And to make it worse, the quotes came with an expiration date and time. By the time I read the quote, I only had four hours left to purchase the plan before the quote expired. This felt unnecessarily aggressive and designed to pressure me into making a quick decision. The subsequent follow-up calls were also very aggressive. This service also called me more than any other company, averaging nearly three calls per day for over a week after submitting the quote. (Update: Over three months since the quote, I am still receiving calls almost every day.)

On a positive note, the quotes I received were among the most affordable options for the vehicles I got quotes on. On average, the cost per mile covered was about $0.02. Only Autopom had a lower price per mile covered. The plans come with a 24-month pay period, so the monthly payments are lower than most services, which have 18-month pay periods. However, the down payment was higher at about 9 percent.

The coverage options are limited and the restrictions are average. Delta Auto Protect only has three coverage options – Diamond, Diamond Plus and Diamond Premier. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as these coverages are standard. There's a comprehensive exclusionary package to cover nearly every component, a basic powertrain package to cover the essentials and a midrange package. While Delta Auto covers vehicles as old as 20 years, it doesn't cover any vehicles with over 140,000 miles. So with limited coverage options and average restrictions, finding coverage for a high-mileage vehicle is unlikely.

The contracts aren't very long. The exact number of pages, and words per page, is difficult to determine because the contracts are previewed as a JPG rather than a PDF like other services. As a result, the contract is not easy to read. The text is very small, and the formatting is a combination of bolded text and capitalized text to signify importance. It can be confusing when the text moves between the two, as the intention isn't clear, and it only serves to distract.

Delta Auto Protect has some of the best reimbursement policies. You are reimbursed up to $65 per day and $260 total for rental vehicles if your car is in the shop. This is more in line with current rental costs and far exceeds other services, which often only cover $30 of a rental per day.

Delta Auto Protect offers affordable plans for vehicles under 140,000 miles, though the coverage options are limited, and the contracts aren't easy to read. The quote process is a bit slow and the salespeople are more aggressive at following up than other services. That said, the roadside assistance policies are very good.

We compared prices for daily and weekly rentals for several different types of vehicles, and National consistently had the highest rates, sometimes nearly double that of lower cost options like Thrifty and Enterprise.

Pricing tends to vary by location, so we booked cars in Los Angeles, New York City and Houston. The closer to the rental date you book, the more expensive it is and your selection of cars will be smaller. We made our reservations several weeks in advance, but National was still the most expensive. Rental companies charge a daily fee for additional drivers, and National’s $12 additional driver fee is about average.

National’s rewards program, the Emerald Club, is different from some of the other rental companies we reviewed. Instead of giving points for each dollar spent, National gives one credit for each eligible rental. After getting seven credits, you can redeem them for a free rental.

There are some advantages to this style of rewards. With points-based rewards programs, short-term rentals cost less, but it takes longer to accumulate enough points for a free rental. If you make a lot of one-day or short-term rentals, you can get a good value through National’s rewards program.

Like all rewards programs, the Emerald Club gives you the option to bypass the regular line and use the dedicated line for club members. It also lets you check out quicker by choosing a car from the select Emerald Club row and completing the checkout at the exit booth.

National has around 1,500 locations in the U.S. It also operates in Canada, Mexico and across Europe, Asia and South America. It has locations at airports as well as in neighborhoods. It doesn’t have a neighborhood pick-up option, which is a useful service where the rental company will come to your hotel or home and take you to the rental office to complete the checkout.

National was among the most expensive companies to book a rental from. We looked at weekly and daily rates, and it was high for both. However, its rewards program is useful if you tend to rent cars for a few days at a time.
