The Miele Olympus Canister Vacuum is a solidly built canister vacuum that works well as a hardwood floor vacuum. Two things stand out about the Olympus: strong cleaning power and high-quality design.

The Olympus has a 1,200-watt motor that supplies more than enough power for a hard surface vacuum. A rotary dial on the canister body allows you to control the suction power of the vacuum. The dial has six selection options, ranging from a full-power mode that lets you attack the dirtiest spots to a quiet mode that allows you to clean your floors without imitating a freight train. The motor and casing come with a seven-year warranty from Miele and look and feel well designed.

The Olympus uses disposable bags that hold about a half-gallon of debris, so you will need to plan to change the bags about once a month. One of the most useful features of the Olympus is a self-sealing collar that ensures dust will not go everywhere when you change a bag.

The Olympus comes with a brushless floor tool that is ideal for low-pile carpet, rugs and hard floors. The brushless design means you should use the Olympus mostly as a hard floor vacuum, because the lack of a brush will make it difficult for the machine to clean medium-pile or high-pile carpets effectively. The Olympus also comes with a crevice nozzle, dusting brush and upholstery tool. This means you can use the Olympus to clean your couch, mantel, curtains and other places that attract dust.

Like all canister vacuums, the Olympus consists of a wheeled canister that houses the vacuum, as well as cleaning attachments that connect to the canister. It has a hose that attaches to a stainless steel, telescopic wand that you can extend up to 4 feet. The wand is especially useful when you use the floor tool or when you need a bit more reach with the dusting brush. The wand attaches to the canister, so you can store the Olympus without a lot of clutter.

Unlike some hard floor vacuums, the Olympus's standard filtration does not meet HEPA standards, so if you are an allergy sufferer you might want to upgrade to the optional HEPA filter, which available for purchase from Miele.

The Olympus works well as a wood floor vacuum because of its strong, consistent cleaning power and reliability. The seven-year manufacturer warranty speaks volumes about the machine's quality.
