The best French door refrigerators are the perfect combination of style and functionality. With their unique two-door design, you can quickly check your food or grab a cold drink without losing precious cooling time. These refrigerators have a spacious interior that provides ample room for all your groceries, including condiments, drinks, leftovers, and fresh produce. In terms of capacity, French door refrigerators are often the roomiest among all the types of refrigerators available in the market, including the best side by side refrigerators.

Aside from their sleek and spacious design, these refrigerators come with plenty of extra features, such as ice dispensers, water dispensers, and humidity-controlled storage drawers. These additional features help reduce food waste and save you money on running costs. Some high-end models even come with touch screens that allow you to control the temperature, see what's inside without opening the door, and much more.

If you're looking for the best French door refrigerators, you'll find reputable brands like LG, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Cafe, Whirlpool, and Samsung on our list. These brands offer different capacities to suit your needs. Larger models offer more storage shelves in the base and door for juice, milk cartons, and drinks, while smaller models are perfect for small families or those with limited kitchen space.

For those on a budget, excellent French-door refrigerators with fewer features or smaller capacities are still available. These models may not have smudge-proof, fingerprint-resistant finishes like the high-end models, but they do come with sliding drawers and door bins as standard features. If you're not planning to buy one of the best freezers, consider getting a French-door refrigerator with a large freezer at the bottom, with a capacity of at least six or seven cubic feet.

The Hisense 25.6 Cu. Ft. 4-Door Smart French Door Refrigerator is a sleek and stylish appliance designed to help families keep their food organized and fresh. Its fingerprint-resistant stainless steel finish and smart capabilities make it an attractive option for those looking for a high-end refrigerator.

Through the accompanying app, our reviewer could control the fridge and freezer temperatures and the VersaTemp Zone, a versatile drawer that could be adjusted to different temperatures. The fridge is designed to provide families easy access to fresh ice and water with an icemaker and water dispenser. While the icemaker could be larger, it performed well daily.

The fridge has three main sections—the fridge, the freezer, and the VeraTemp Zone. Its capacity is 18.67 cubic feet, and the handles are located along the top and bottom of the doors. While the right door was easy to open, the left side was more difficult due to the door seal that suctions to the door. One drawback is that if the right door is opened, it doesn't stay open, which could sometimes be inconvenient.

The fridge has two shelves, which offer three levels to store food. The shelves could be adjusted to accommodate taller items like gallons of milk or large soda bottles. Below the shelves are three drawers — two mid-sized ones for vegetables and a thinner one between them where we could store snacks or cheeses.

The right door has three shelves on the inside, perfect for sauces and dressings. The left door has three shelves, too, but they’re limited in height because the ice maker chute takes up the rest of that door. The icemaker is in the fridge's top left corner and could hold enough ice for daily use.

The VersaTemp Zone is located below the fridge and is not that deep of a drawer, but it does have a medium-sized removable container on the left side. We could adjust the temperature of this drawer to be whatever they need. It could be used as another large drawer with (nearly) the same temperature as the fridge or as a wine chiller.

The freezer is located at the bottom of the fridge and has a deep, divided drawer. Another built-in drawer extends out, allowing us to store smaller items.

The control panel, the water dispenser, and the icemaker are located on the left front side of the fridge. The control panel has various buttons that allow us to see and adjust the temperature of all three sections of the refrigerator, set a child lock alarm, turn the icemaker on and off, adjust between Fahrenheit and Celsius, and have an Eco button. The ice maker also has three buttons—cubed, crushed, and water.

Reasons to avoid

The Frigidaire FRFN2823AS is a reliable, efficient refrigerator with a stunning minimalist design. It features CrispSeal Crisper drawers that keep fresh fruit and veg fresh for longer by using a seal to block out air from entering the drawers and causing fresh produce to deteriorate.

This refrigerator also features an ice maker and a water filter, which is great for encouraging you to drink more water and less soda. The water filter uses PurePour technology to filter out 99% of contaminants, giving you crisp, clear water while saving you money on bottled water.

The freezer has an EvenTemp cooling system, which reduces freezer burn by constantly cycling cool air around your freezer and reacting quickly to a sudden change in temperature. The freezer will begin recooling accordingly.

If you keep a lot of cured meats or cheese in your fridge, you will be happy to know that the Frigidaire FRFN2823AS features a full-width deli drawer designed to store cured foods. You can also store them without worrying about the smell, as the PureAir Ultra II filter will remove any intrusive odors (it works much better than baking soda and lemon juice).

And if you have kids in the house, the dispenser lock ensures you don’t end up with a giant puddle of water all over the floor that you need to clean up.

Although the water and ice dispenser takes up a fair amount of space, the generous 25 cubic feet capacity means plenty of room to store all your food and drink. The freezer offers ample storage, too, with a decent capacity in the two-tiered bins and a clean layout that makes finding what you’re looking for a breeze. However, it’s not smart-enabled, so if that’s important, you’ll be better off with an alternative model.

How to choose the best French door refrigerator for you

There are a lot of features to look for when it comes to the best French door refrigerators, so it can often be overwhelming when trying to choose a new model. Storage should be the first thing to look for, with high capacities being suited for large families (or people who like to stack their refrigerator with ten different types of soda) and small capacities being better for couples or people with limited space in their kitchen.

If you are low on space, you can opt for a counter-depth French door refrigerator to save room for other appliances. It's worth mentioning that the larger the capacity, the more expensive the refrigerator.

If you are a fan of smart technology, then touch-control refrigerators with smart technology could be good for you. Smart models often feature climate controls and the ability to auto-fill cups, with non-smart models often having features such as ice cube dispensers or water coolers - these are worth thinking about, especially if you want cold water whenever you want.

Some models feature a door-in-door design, which allows you to slide open a panel to grab a snack or cold can without letting the cold out from opening the door completely. Models with a viewing door will let you pick a cold drink or snack without chilled air escaping into your warm house.

French door refrigerator FAQs

What are the benefits of a French door refrigerator?

French door refrigerators stand out from regular refrigerators in several ways, practically and aesthetically. French doors usually have larger storage spaces than normal refrigerators due to their wider shelves, which allow for more storage for things like milk and other drinks.

Additionally, French-door refrigerators usually have a dedicated refrigerator drawer, which means you can better organize and store fresh fruit and vegetables or packets of raw meat. Some models also feature gallon bin doors, can caddies, and dividers within the refrigerator door.

In addition to being more practical, French-door refrigerators are also more aesthetically pleasing. The door is split down the middle into two panels instead of one large door. This looks much nicer and means you don't have to open a big door to get a snack or a cold drink.

When is the best time to buy a French door refrigerator?

There is no general agreement on a refrigerator's lifespan. Nachi.org lists refrigerators' lifespans between nine and 13 years. There is no differentiation between different types of fridges, like French door or side-by-side. They should all have comparable lifespans, and some sources estimate the lifespan at up to 15 years.

Elise Barsch, Social Media Manager for iFixit, said a study done in Europe and published on ScienceDirect suggests that refrigerator lifespans have decreased over the past couple of decades, down from an average lifespan of about 20 years in 2000 to about 14 years for the refrigerators sold now.

While they don’t last as long, Barsch said they are more energy efficient than they used to be. “Fortunately, legislators in Europe are working to ensure refrigerators are not only more energy efficient while in use, but also more repairable throughout their entire lifespan,” Barsch said. She referred to a set of legislative proposals European member states voted on that were designed to make refrigerators more repairable and, therefore, less impactful on the environment. Future legislation will focus on washing machines and other products.
