Pros / You can adjust the shelves’ heights to accommodate the food you’re storing.
Cons / It doesn’t have an automatic defrost feature.
Verdict / If you don’t have much space in your room and want to store both food and drinks, the Sunpentown RF-244SS is worth considering.
The Sunpentown RF-244SS is an affordable, energy efficient mini refrigerator. Because of this model’s space-saving design, it’s easy to find a spot for it in a small room such as a dorm room or home office. For example, it doesn’t have a handle that sticks out and takes up space. The RF-244SS also has a reversible door, so you can choose whether it swings open to the left or the right, depending on the area around where you plan to put it. You just remove the door and its hinges, then reattach them on the other side of the frame.
This mini fridge has a 2.4-cubic-foot capacity. It comes with two slide-out wire shelves you can place in four positions to accommodate food of various sizes. Also, the door has a shelf that’s tall and wide enough to fit a couple 2-liter bottles as well as a shorter shelf for condiments and other small jars and bottles.
The Sunpentown RF-244S has a small freezer compartment – it fits much less than the full-width freezers on other models we reviewed but is still handy. You control the fridge and freezer temperatures with a dial control. The freezer can maintain a temperature below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
This mini fridge is efficient enough to earn Energy Star certification. As such, it doesn’t cost much to run. It’s estimated to cost $26 per year for the electricity to run this appliance, though you may spend more or less depending on utility prices in your area.
One of the Sunpentown RF-244S’s drawbacks is it doesn’t have an automatic defrost feature. When it’s time to clean the fridge, you have to take everything out and defrost it manually. If this is a deal breaker, take a look at the Danby DAR017A2BDD.
