Belgian waffle makers are very popular at the moment. The trend may or may not be related to the flip-style cookers found in many hotels surrounded by hungry travelers. With the exception of the Waring Pro Double Belgian, we found the Belgian style waffle irons to be underwhelming.
They generally are less likely to create the perfect waffle crispness on the outside. Thick waffles also are more likely to split and get stuck on one or both sides of a Belgian waffle iron, making them difficult to clean. The units themselves also are much bigger than traditional waffle irons, so if you want to conserve counter space Belgian is not the way to go. People love those big pockets that can be filled with toppings, though. If you love big Belgian waffles we recommend the Waring Pro Double Belgian.
This machine produces a very fine quality waffle. It takes a little trial and error to figure out how to get to that ideal, crisp texture and fluffy center, but once you get the hang of this waffler it works quickly and efficiently.
This machine is quite large, like all Belgian style units, but this one justifies its size by giving you two waffles in about the same space it usually takes to make just one. Waffles are a waiting game every time but this is one of the best waffle makers for a big crowd. Making two waffles at a time reduces waiting and gets folks to the best part of their morning sooner.
A browning control knob means you can decide how well done you want your waffle to be. A beep lets you know when your waffles are done to your preferred level of browning. The beep is very convenient because it allows you to walk away instead of watching the waffle maker for a light to turn on, or putting a timer on it. We found the beeper to be very accurate too. There is some room for personal preference but we found that in general the waffles were done when the beeper indicated they were. That is not true for many competitors.
Prep & Cleanup
The Waring Pro sticks less than many of the Belgian-style units and is relatively easy to get clean. Since there are two separate waffle chambers you have to get through a fair amount of real estate, so you will have to invest some time, but the non-stick surface truly is non-stick. We had to really scrub competing units but this one just needed some wiping down. The stainless steel exterior is the one thing that may take some extra time or a specialized cleaner before it looks nice again. The inside stayed pretty respectable, though, even after many batches of waffles.
The large size will gobble up your counter space. We could not open the lid under the cabinets in our test kitchen; we had to slide it out to the edge of the counter to be able to open it. That is only a big deal if you have limited space. Even in a big kitchen you may want to limit countertop clutter, though, and the Waring Pro Double Belgian is not the unit for that.
The cord wrap feature is nice, especially on a unit this big. You can limit clutter by winding up all or part of the cord. You can turn the cooking part vertical to save a little space but the waffle iron's footprint remains the same.
Warranty & Support
We got courteous and speedy service via email from Waring Pro customer service, and this manufacturer has a telephone number available for customers as well. The warranty on this waffle maker is one year, which is comparable to most others.
Belgian style waffle makers are generally bulky and harder to clean than their thinner counterparts, but if you love thick waffles this unit from Waring Pro is the best option. You get two waffles for the same amount of time and space it takes to get one with competing units, and the non-stick surface used by Waring does a good job of releasing the waffle and making cleanup a breeze. The two-in-one design cuts wait times and makes this a great unit for Saturday morning waffles with the family.
