Acronis Internet Security Suite is the current installment to the landmark series of computer maintenance software from Acronis, Inc. and a solid entry in the internet security suites software category. From a company that's mostly known for its data backup and disk imaging software, Acronis Internet Security Suite is beginning to be recognized as a good choice for all-around PC maintenance and security. When you first use the program, remember it's a relatively new entry into their product offerings. And, while it's more than capable of keeping your computer safe and is definitely worth looking into, its features aren't strong enough and the feature set is too small for it to compete with its higher-ranked counterparts. As with other products in the Acronis family, we’re confident that their internet security software it will improve as it matures.
Acronis Internet Security Suite’s offering of spyware protection is integrated with its antivirus scanning engine. Acronis isn't well known for antispyware applications, so they're at a disadvantage compared to the products like Webroot Internet Security Essentials or BitDefender Internet Security. That's not to say, however, that their antispyware engine is difficult to use or ineffective. We would like to see more information regarding the workings of the program and perhaps a separate section of the internet security software to include the antispyware scanner. With that said, we still found their antispyware functionality to be very competent at protecting our test computer.
The antivirus functions in Acronis Internet Security Suite are the highlight of the internet security software. So much so that Acronis even offers a separate program to help you battle against viruses. Their antivirus tools performed more effectively than most standalone tools we tested.
Beyond its effectiveness, Acronis performs while using remarkably few system resources. At the heart of this programming is the ability to identify trusted files and applications and to simply skip them during a scan. Simple though it seems, we think that this ability to not waste time and computer power rescanning the same unchanged, harmless files over and over again represents laudable programming.
The firewall in Acronis Internet Security Suite 2010 scans ports and both incoming and outgoing communications to keep malicious applications from accessing your computer and its critical information. You can put programs you trust on a whitelist where the program will create special rules for the first time each program is run. Users have the choice of one of four different levels of security: Allow All (Game Mode), Allow Known Programs, Report and Deny All. We found this selectivity to be most helpful in offering the correct degree of protection without being overly intrusive. It's an excellent utility that's sure to keep all intruders at bay.
