French Complete Edition by Transparent Language is learning French software designed to elevate beginners to true speakers. It accomplishes this by providing vocabulary flash cards, interactive games, voice-recording technology and a video library that not only provides a solid foundation of vocabulary words, but also teaches other elements such as grammar, syntax and cultural context that are essential for becoming proficient in French.
For these reasons and more, French Complete Edition earns our Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for learn French software. Its most comprehensive resource is the Lexicon Translation Dictionary, but there are also great tools such as speech recognition, image association and more that enable you to learn the way that's best for you.
French Complete Edition covers all the fundamentals for learning French. It shines in some areas, such as on-the-go learning, flashcards and video. Other areas, such as voice recognition and grammar, are slightly weaker but are still covered and can help advance your learning. Transparent Language has also implemented Lexicon Translation Dictionary for instant translation at any time and a glossary for additional help.
French Complete edition looks simple and well designed. And for the most part, it is. The one thing that makes the program more complicated is the fact that you are actually working with two different programs. You can access some features in both programs, while others are available only in one. Once you spend a few minutes playing around with both programs, you will become more comfortable and should have no problem getting around. If all else fails, there is a helpful video tutorial that can show you the basics of how the program works.
There are several different ways of learning in the French Complete Edition. Many of the features use picture-word association and word-recognition activities to improve your French. The French Complete Edition also makes good use of video to help you see and experience French conversations and accents in context. This is great for helping you understand how the language sounds.
There is also a speech recognition system that gives extensive feedback on different parts of your voice so that you know exactly what to work on. Unfortunately, the speech recognition isn't quite as accurate in evaluating voices as the same technology in some of the other programs we reviewed.
One feature we really like that helps you understand exactly what is being said and how to pronounce it is the Slow Sounds option. This takes any word and slows down the speech so that you can hear every syllable and pronounce them correctly.
French Complete Edition has plenty of features that make it stand out. Start off by building your vocabulary with flashcards and interactive games, and even record your voice for each new word. With the new tracking feature, you will always be able to see what you have learned. French Complete Edition will let you know when words and phrases you've learned have gone stale or old and will give you the option to refresh your memory. The only drawback is that you will only be able to track your vocabulary with this feature and not other important information like grammar and pronunciation.
