Pros / The reports include social media information.

Cons / Email addresses and phone numbers are not up-to-date.

Verdict / Spokeo’s reports aren’t particularly enlightening, but they are cheaper than other services.

Spokeo is a people search service that focuses on finding social media profiles. We found sparse information that wasn’t particularly enlightening. It’s one of the more affordable services we looked at, as its monthly cost is less than services like Intelius and Instant Checkmate.

We reviewed the search interface of each service, to see how well they performed at finding our subjects. Our targets had both common and uncommon names, so our search covered a variety of circumstances. Spokeo rates well here, we had no problem locating our targets. Spokeo also lets you filter by location. There’s a map on the results page that lets you choose the state you want to narrow your search too. You can also search by email or phone number.

Spokeo searches through 100 different social media sites including blogging, music, dating and shopping sites. We didn’t find any of our subject’s information, but the data depends on how many social media sites your subject frequents.

To evaluate these services, we searched three different people and verified the information on each report for accuracy and timeliness. Spokeo disappointed in both respects. Information on these reports tended to be incomplete. For example, it only had one or two email addresses for our subjects and not the most recent addresses. Spokeo also didn’t list current landline or cell phone numbers.

Mailing addresses however were all current, though without current contact info such as a phone number it’s difficult to get back in touch. Marriage records were missing on our reports, even though all our subjects were married. Spokeo does offer a historical records report for $4.95 that looks more closely at marriage and divorce records.

Criminal history reports are also available. These reports include a nationwide check for any criminal convictions or misdemeanors. This information isn’t included in the basic report so you can either upgrade your subscription for an additional $2.95 or purchase a single report for $49.95. This is the highest cost for any report we reviewed. However, the basic subscription is $13.95 a month, which is among the lowest. It’s not a value option because you’re limited to only 100 searches a month, where most other people search services offer unlimited searches with monthly subscriptions.
