Pros / The SmartRoom Blocks feature helps you create rooms quickly.

Cons / The software lacks dollhouse and wireframe views.

Verdict / Total 3D Home Design Deluxe has plenty of tools to help you reimagine your home's interior and a plethora of sample plans and objects, but some design elements are dated and its overall functionality is limited.

Total 3D Home Design Deluxe can help you redecorate your living room, renovate a spare bedroom, add a family room or design an entire house. It is functional, though limited, interior design software that a novice designer can use. This home interior design software is a good way to brainstorm ideas for house plans, interior décor and even landscaping. It provides the basic tools to dream up and sketch out your ideas but is missing several features you can find in top-ranked products. Still, it is adequate to create usable interior design plans.

The SmartRoom Blocks feature lets you create complete rooms automatically, which saves time and can help you generate design ideas. This software has color-coded floor plans that make it easy to distinguish between windows, doors, furnishings and appliances in your designs.

You can design in both 2D and 3D. This software lets you import images to use in your design, such as pictures of furnishings and fixtures, and to simulate interior lighting and shadows. In addition, its photo render feature transforms your designs into lifelike images.

This 3D interior design software does not let you create custom animations – or movie-like walkthroughs – of your finished design. Moreover, you cannot view designs in dollhouse view, which allows you to see and edit without the roof in the way, or in wireframe view, which is a 3D line drawing of sorts.

Total 3D is affordable interior design software, but it still has a variety of paint, wallpaper, flooring, tile and carpet options. You can choose from more than 40 window and door types and customize them to fit your personal style. It also has more than 1,000 sample plans, a materials paintbrush and tools to generate stairs, cabinets, window coverings and more. A window treatment tool lets you place shades and valances.

This home design software has thousands of brand-name products and materials in its object library, including appliances, bathroom fixtures, cabinets, doors, windows, flooring, light fixtures, stairs, interior furniture and more. There is also a photo gallery of design ideas for inspiration. However, the library doesn’t have design elements for handicap accessibility, fireplaces, outdoor furniture and lighting, and you can’t download additional free items.

You can’t drag and drop objects in any of the 3D views, but you can adjust textures, colors and materials in either the 2D or 3D view. We had trouble importing objects into one of our designs. We followed the steps to import the image and designated it as ours, but it disappeared when we went to apply it to a wall in our design. Also, many of the texture, color and material options are out of date.

We didn’t run into problems with floating objects as with some other programs, but lining up objects was a problem. This is partly because the program updates each section separately. More advanced software recognizes when sections are continuous and adjusts the design accordingly. For instance, in one design we had a kitchen sink with cabinets above it. We added additional cabinet sections on either side, but they wouldn’t line up with the cabinets above the sink and jutted out a bit.

One of the software’s advantages is it tracks estimated and actual costs for materials and labor. This gives you an idea of what the final price will be on every project you design. You cannot design electrical and lighting plans or HVAC and plumbing plans with Total 3D Home Design Deluxe.

This program is somewhat difficult to learn and use. If you want a more intuitive program, consider our top pick - Virtual Architect Ultimate.

Support options are somewhat limited and can be spotty. There is a FAQs section to answer common questions, but there isn’t a community forum to interact with other users. You can contact customer service by phone or email, but we did not always get a quick response to email inquiries. The company includes a manual and tutorials in the program but not online. Other manufacturers generally made it easier to find answers.

Total 3D Home Design Deluxe lets you view designs in 3D and has photo rendering tools that transform your designs to look like real rooms. This software also has a variety of color, flooring, fixture and furnishing options as well as a generous selection of sample plans and objects. However, some of the textures, colors and materials are dated, it has limited viewing options and lining up sections within a design can be a challenge. This is affordable software, but it is not the easiest to use, making it less than ideal for beginners.
