Corel VideoStudio Pro X8.5 is a unique entry in our review of the best DVD authoring software. In its latest update, Corel spun off the DVD maker tools into a standalone application called VideoStudio MyDVD, which comes bundled with VideoStudio.
This gave Corel the ability to beef up the DVD creation tools it offers, like the ability to add bonus features, closed captions and create disc images. These features, combined with VideoStudio’s diverse and powerful array of video editing features, earns it the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award.
- Time to Create Test Disc
- Editing Tracks
- Effects and Transitions
- Usability Score
VideoStudio MyDVD has two DVD authoring modes: Magic and Advanced. Using Magic Mode, it took us just five minutes to create our test disc. The program’s drag-and-drop interface makes it extremely easy to pick a menu theme, insert video footage and other content, customize the disc’s interface, and start burning a new disc.
Once the DVD was built, it took VideoStudio MyDVD a little more than 30 minutes to burn it onto a blank disc. This means that you can create a fully functional DVD, start to finish, in less than an hour.
Advanced Mode is where you can craft more complex projects. This DVD creator allows you to insert intro videos; customize its menu layout; program submenus; and add chapter markers, subtitles, and more to your disc. Everything you’ve come to expect from a commercially produced DVD you can create for yourself in this application.
When you build a DVD using this software, you’re also creating what is known as an ISO file, or ISO image. This is essentially the blueprint of a disc and what your DVD authoring software uses to burn your content to a blank disc. VideoStudio MyDVD allows you to save these blueprints onto your hard drive. Doing so creates a virtual DVD on your computer that works in most DVD-player software. It also gives you the ability to burn new copies of your disc, even if you don’t have DVD authoring software installed.
Video Editing Tools
Before you can take advantage of the great DVD creator tools in VideoStudio MyDVD, you need finished videos to burn to the discs. VideoStudio offers an extensive and easily learnable array of video editing tools that let you transform the raw footage on your smartphone, digital camera or camcorder into a polished home movie that you can show to your family and friends.
VideoStudio’s editing features are laid out in the timeline/storyboard workflow found in almost all the applications on our side-by-side comparison chart. Timeline is the traditional non-linear editing format that industry professionals have used for decades. If you want to cut your teeth and learn the basics of professional video editing, this is the workflow to choose. Storyboard is a more consumer-friendly workflow that is more accessible to new and casual users.
Both Timeline and Storyboard allow you to trim, edit and split clips of footage so that only the video you want remains in your final product. This DVD creator also has the ability to perform batch edits. This means you can edit multiple clips simultaneously. Additionally, VideoStudio employs what is known as non-destructive editing, which means that you can cut and splice footage as much as you want, but the original file remains unchanged.
Making a great video to burn onto a DVD is more than just arranging video clips on a timeline. The best DVD authoring software comes with a library of digital effects, enhancements, transitions and more. VideoStudio offers more than 200 such objects. While this is adequate for most projects, several other products on our lineup have much larger effect libraries.
The audio editing tools in this DVD authoring software are quite robust. You have the ability to adjust volume, track duration and modify the audio channels. This software also provides a sound mixer and audio filters. These sound tools can make the difference between a project that is good enough and one that stands out above the noise.
Ease of Use
Corel is one of the rare DVD authoring programs that strikes the right balance usability and functionality. VideoStudio Pro is as accessible to novice and casual users as possible without sacrificing the quality of the tools it provides. Both the Timeline and Storyboard modes are organized in an intuitive manner, and all the elements that go with them are easy to find.
Despite its intuitive interface, you'll often need instructions on how to use VideoStudio’s toolset. Corel offers dozens of video tutorials on its website. These tutorials walk you through using all of the software's tools step by step. This is an invaluable resource for beginning editors who want to learn how to get exactly what they want out of their video projects.
Help & Support
Corel makes it extremely easy to resolve both technical and customer support issues. Most problems can be solved by consulting the company’s online knowledgebase and FAQs. If you have a more specific problem, you can reach out to the company either by email or by phone.
The journey from a pile of raw footage to a compelling narrative contained on a plastic disc is a long and complicated one.
