Our Verdict

A great place to rent books, Chegg Textbooks is perfect for anyone seeking eTexts especially. We love the ease of returns, and the fact you get four weeks of Chegg Study for free too.

For

  • Great for eTextbooks
  • Easy returns
  • Comes with free trial of Chegg Study

Against

  • Limited physical book rental options
  • Basic website design

Chegg Textbooks is a varied site, making it perfect for anyone looking to supplement or enhance learning. Not only is it one of the best textbook rental online options, but it also offers virtual tutoring too, in a different part of the site. That means it's great for all levels of study, whether you're at high school, college, or other further education institutes. In our initial tests, we found that Chegg Textbooks is also one of the top places to rent eTextbooks because of the flexible rental terms it offers and the ability to access a Q&A section through its eTextbook platform.

When you’re selecting your eTextbook rentals, you can choose to rent them for 90, 120 or 180 days, or buy a permanent electronic version that doesn’t expire. Those rental terms are much more flexible than many of the textbook companies we reviewed although eCampus Textbooks offers similar terms. Of note, some companies don’t offer permanent electronic versions, but Chegg does via its own app, which you can download on iOS, Android, PC or Mac.

Unfortunately, for physical books Chegg only offers semester and quarter-long rental periods. Other companies we reviewed offered much more flexibility, which is definitely a negative. Another slight issue is that the website is quite hard to navigate and find exactly what you need, but it's a minor problem.

One nice benefit Chegg offers is the ability to read a free eTextbook while your physical book is being delivered, although this is offered by several other providers. Chegg also offers an in-app Q&A section where you can browse question boards and find answers from Chegg subject matter experts. If you have questions of your own, you can also submit those questions and receive answers.

When we rented a physical book from Chegg, we were impressed that the book came in a complete box that can be reused to send your rentals back. Returns are free, which is standard, but a neat feature. Chegg Textbooks ships free if your order is over $35, so it’s a good idea to order multiple books together to qualify for this rate and make your money go further.

What's even better is that signing up for Chegg Textbooks will also get you a free four week trial of its Study program, which we assess in our Chegg Tutors review. However, if you want a quick snapshot - yes, it's a great little bonus.

Perhaps the biggest positive we noticed in our textbook rental review of Chegg, however, was the 30-day free extension that’s available if you need it. All you have to do is fill out a form online. If you need even more time you can pay extra for another extension. Chegg Textbooks is your best choice if you want flexibility and features while renting eTextbooks. The addition of a generous extension period and study helps make this a great place to rent college textbooks. The only downside is the slightly limited range of options of physical rentals.
