The hit show SpongeBob SquarePants has been on TV since 1999. Its main character, the gullible and sweet-natured SpongeBob, with his signature laugh and cast of goofy friends, has spawned a host of products. Among them is SpongeBob SquarePants Typing, a typing software for kids that offers quite basic but helpful keyboarding instructions for youngsters.
Typing software for kids should be as entertaining as possible to hold their interest. In this area, SpongeBob does not disappoint. It features bright and colorful images as well as the characteristically silly soundtrack of the TV show. All this combines to make the task of learning keyboarding fun for youngsters.
This software has 20 typing lessons that focus on accuracy rather than speed. SpongeBob teaches correct finger-to-key movement to achieve accurate typing skills, and the program tracks the words per minute typing speed. As kids apply these principles, their speed will increase. Your children also can enjoy and learn from the practices and games included with this software. It provides three challenge levels and lets your kids select which activities to do from a fun park arcade.
However, the program tends to focus more on entertainment and basic typing than comprehensive lessons and features. This software is missing such things as dictation practice and numeric keypad lessons. It also lacks timed typing tests, goal-setting capabilities and reporting tools. The software tracks your kids’ progress by keys, but you cannot see progress reports for individual fingers or hands. You are not shown the number of mistakes made after a test, and you only get reports, not graphs.
Although this software is not as comprehensive as other programs like it, SpongeBob SquarePants Typing is intuitive and easy enough for children as young as seven years old. In terms of software support, you get a user guide that explains installation and navigation, as well as a company website that offers FAQs and email support. However, you won't find phone support through the manufacturer.
SpongeBob SquarePants Typing is a good way to introduce kids to typing. Most lessons focus on accuracy over speed, which lays a foundation for later lessons. They will enjoy the cartoon characters, and even the lessons and practices are fun. Your kids will ultimately need to move on to a more sophisticated and feature-rich mode of instruction to become really good at keyboarding; however, this software offers a fun start.
