Smartpixel Pro offers most of the video recording and editing features we look for in this category, though it comes up short on the quality of the fished video. It's also missing key tools like the ability to pan and zoom on portions of your screen and to adjust the audio of your captured video. Improvements in these areas would bump this program into higher territory in our side-by-side comparison.
When you launch Smartpixel, you have three options to choose from: Editor, Recorder and Webcam. Recorder is where you'll find the options to capture the action happening on your screen. And it's quite simple – the red circle starts the recording, and the grey square stops it. Other options are equally intuitive. If you've ever operated a camcorder, VCR or other recording device, you shouldn't have any problems running the recorder module.
If you access the recording module's settings, you can program hotkeys, which are simply keyboard shortcuts that allow you to quickly start, stop and pause your recordings. You also have options to take still screenshots and mark exciting moments in your video. These tools are great because you have complete control of your recording without having to access the interface while it's underway.
The Webcam option is exactly what it sounds like: It uses your computer's integrated webcam to capture your face while you make a recording. When you attach a microphone (or use your computer's onboard microphone), you can narrate your video as you record it. You also have the option of adding filters and effects to webcam video so you get the exact look and feel you want.
The video-editing module allows you to fine-tune the screen and webcam videos you capture. The module is harder to use than other video-editing tools found in other programs, but you have a range of options at your fingertips. You can trim unwanted footage and audio, add media, like videos and audio from your computer; it even provides a library of sounds and effects you can add.
What Smartpixel doesn't have is the ability to pan and zoom to certain parts of your recording to highlight what you want your audience to see. Additionally, there's no way to adjust the audio you've recorded. Both of these capabilities are found in our award-winning programs, and if you're looking for a powerful and versatile application, check out Movavi Screen Capture software.
The software also suffers from less-than-perfect quality in the finished videos. Our video experts examined a test project created by Smartpixel. They noted significant pixelation and hesitation in the exported video. And although it's not enough to make the video unwatchable, the picture is not nearly as clear and detailed as software that ranked higher up in our lineup.
Smartpixel Pro is a solid choice for video capture software. It's intuitive to navigate. Recording your screen and using your webcam is quite simple. The video editor is not as straightforward, but with some practice, you should get the hang out it. While the quality of the finished videos isn't as good as some other products we reviewed, it meets the needs of most users.
