Pros / This Blu-ray player has the Deep Color video enhancement feature, which improves picture quality.
Cons / The included remote control is too small.
Verdict / The Magnavox MBP1500 may not be as feature filled as other Blu-ray players, but it is affordable, has an easy setup and upconverts DVDs to high definition.
The Magnavox MBP1500 is an affordable Blu-ray disc player with a slim design. Coming in at just 1.5-inches thick, we were impressed with how thin it is. Because it doesn't have a large footprint, it is a good Blu-ray player for a bedroom TV.
This Magnavox is geared toward users who want a barebones system. It's nothing fancy and lacks upscale image processing. It doesn't support any video streaming services, 3D video or DLNA.
Although this Blu-ray player has a simple setup, its menu interface isn't the most pleasant to use. In addition, the unit comes with a small remote control that is easy to lose. Magnavox doesn't include an HDMI cable to connect the player to your television, but batteries for the remote are thrown in.
During our tests, we found that this Blu-ray player takes 14.7 seconds to boot up – the average speed of the products in our review was 11 seconds. If you need a player that has several outputs, such as an optical digital, coaxial or HDMI audio output, you should look elsewhere, as this unit has none. Fortunately, like most other players, it has a USB port so you can play stored photos and videos. It also has a parental lock so you can limit your child's use.
The MBP1500 doesn't play 4K content, but it has the Deep Color video enhancement feature, which means it uses expanded color ranges to provide better image quality. It also has a repeat feature so you can loop your videos; this comes in handy if you want to use the player at tradeshows or even to play ambient noise before bed, since it can also play CDs. It even upconverts DVDs to 1080p HD quality.
You get a one-year warranty with this unit, which is standard for Blu-ray players. Magnavox doesn't offer phone support, but it has an email address for support queries. Its website also has an FAQs page.

The Magnavox MBP1500 Blu-ray player may not be fancy, but it is affordable and easy to set up, and it has a small footprint. This isn’t the best player for your home theater system since it’s missing several outputs and doesn't have Wi-Fi for streaming video, but if you just need a barebones system that can play Blu-ray discs, this may be the one for you.
