Brush Performance

The DiamondClean is thinner, lighter and more comfortable to hold than the other electric brushes we tested. The handle has a ceramic feel, slight bend and rounded edges. There isn’t a seam along the display, and besides the on and off button, there’s no edge or seam that your hand touches while brushing. Our testers rated it as the most comfortable handle out of all the brushes we reviewed. The electric toothbrushes we tested weighed an average of 5.2 ounces, and the DiamondClean was a below-average 4.75 ounces.

Our testers rated the brushing experience as on par with the other Sonicare brushes. The brush head is elongated, but it’s quite small and the bristles are very soft. It also comes with a compact version of the DiamondClean head. Sonicare brushes usually start quite gentle and increase the intensity over the course of a few days. The first brushings were described as creating an almost tickling sensation.

The battery life is a full three weeks. Most of our testers preferred the DiamondClean charger because of its size and appearance, but the long-lasting charge easily allows you to keep it out of sight if you prefer to not clutter your vanity top with electronics. The charging stand is disguised as a glass cup, which keeps your counter clear and looks modern and decorative. You can also remove the charging portion and keep the toothbrush in place in the cup to help keep it clean.

While Philips’ power toothbrushes aren’t meant to replace flossing, sonic brushes do a much better job of forcing toothpaste and water between teeth and in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth than oscillating or manual brushes. We were able to observe this action by running the brush head under water; we could actually see a jet of water emanating from the brush head. The revolving and oscillating brush heads did little to disturb the water.

Features & Accessories

When the toothbrush is off, the display isn’t visible. Once on, the cleaning modes are illuminated below the on and off button. Pressing the button cycles through Clean, White, Polish, Gum Care and Sensitive modes.

The brush alerts you to change quadrants every 30 seconds, with some variation depending on which mode you use. There is no audible alert as some brushes provide, but there is a stutter in the vibration. The DiamondClean didn’t slow or stop when we applied excessive pressure, so you need to be mindful of how aggressively you brush.

The travel case is the best of any toothbrush we reviewed. It’s a textured hard shell with slots for two heads. It also includes a USB cable charger built in to the travel case, so you can charge the toothbrush when you’re away from home.

Unlike other high-end rechargeable brushes, it doesn’t include a method for tracking progress like a Bluetooth enabled smartphone app or notification screen, which you may find useful. The toothbrush includes two heads, and you can purchase it in black, white, pink and amethyst.

Warranty & Support

The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean comes with a two-year warranty, which is common for electric toothbrushes; only the lesser-known brands have shorter warranty periods. The warranty guarantees the brush against defects but doesn’t cover normal wear and tear or user damage.

We were able to immediately contact Philips customer service, even at unusual hours. The live chat contact option gave us instant access to help, and the rep was able to quickly answer questions and concerns. At the end of the chat session, we were even offered a promotional code. In addition, our email was answered within hours, and we were able to get through to customer service by phone without waiting. Philips also has a list of FAQs on the product’s page, and if you lose your manual, you can easily find a digital copy online.

Summary

The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean has a wide selection of features and a comfortable, professional feeling handle. While the price is a little higher than models with similar features and it lacks a pressure sensitive notification, the handle comfort and overall user satisfaction were enough to make the DiamondClean one of the best rated electric toothbrushes. The finish, light weight, and charger and glass stand make this a standout model.
